vikiomega9··on Play: Statically typed Forth, compiled to WASM
thanks! Is there a favourite resource you've come across?
vikiomega9··on Play: Statically typed Forth, compiled to WASM
Can you tell me a bit about your background and your journey towards writing WASM, and learning to write a complier? (for context I never took a compiler course, vaguely know what lex and yacc are)
vikiomega9··on My Thoughts on Monorepo
I haven't used github in a while, when does an unclean merge happen? When two people merge their branches at the same time?
vikiomega9··on The Laptev Sea hasn't frozen
How much of an impact would a Biden administration have on helping with climate change? Beside policy changes would they support moonshot research?
vikiomega9··on Early Work
Perhaps we don't need as many overconfident risk takers, and I think of this whenever I read about the quiet millionaire or people who have a flourishing business that is not sexy.
vikiomega9··on Better Git diff output for Ruby, Python, Elixir, Go
Insane that I never tried looking for different diff tools, thanks for the recommendation!
vikiomega9··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
Are there specific cuisines? The Indian options are pretty bad imo, there are a few good places but overall not as good as the South Bay.
vikiomega9··on I'm Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Could you share more details about your case. Happy to email you or chat elsewhere.
vikiomega9··on Designing a New Rust Class at Stanford: Safety in Systems Programming
You could drop the OOP lecture and leave detailed notes on the course page instead. I'm not arguing for OOP v FP or anything like that, just that for either (and other) paradigms a specific testing approach might be better suited for this course. Talking about the complexity v. safety trade off might be better suited.
vikiomega9··on Designing a New Rust Class at Stanford: Safety in Systems Programming
I don't see a focus on testing in this course. Was that by design? I feel like a lot of design out there forgets this important implementation detail.
vikiomega9··on Trump administration announces overhaul of H1B visa program requiring higher pay
That's just the base pay right?
vikiomega9··on Researchers are now developing new forms of real sugar
I always wonder about this. Why do we choose to solve a problem with another. Something about individual freedom or something?

I don't know the others :)

vikiomega9··on How to Get Promoted
You'll need to say more :)
vikiomega9··on How to Get Promoted
I would love to hear about other models of the world that are employed to think about it. My view is that there's about 5 mental models given how mundane human life is in general (I'm speaking in hyperbole of course).
vikiomega9··on Patrick Collison's Questions
I think it's a little disingenuous to call America a heterogenous society. While the share of population for different ancestries[1] makes it look heterogenous, a large part of the equation is cultural homogeneity. American culture is derived from its anglo history and I'd argue economic and political pressures have forced "model minorities" to forgo their heritage.

vikiomega9··on Robinhood now valued at $11.2B with new fund backing
Is there something specific about Vanguard that you use it for, I can buy ETFs on e-trade and other platforms right?
vikiomega9··on Kosmonaut: web browser from scratch in Rust
As a tangent, is there a Firefox focus equivalent for the desktop?
vikiomega9··on Kosmonaut: web browser from scratch in Rust
Brilliant. There should be some way to incentivize lite pages, even if only for news websites.
vikiomega9··on Rob Pike's Rules of Programming (1989)
If you're thinking about map-reduce, the original Google paper talks about associativity.
vikiomega9··on Readings in Database Systems, 5th Edition (2015)
Which ones?
vikiomega9··on Ideas That Changed My Life
There are steps to learning and copying is one of them, and if someone is willing to acknowledge this that's a win. The problem is when people decide someone else has done the heavy thinking for them and they just have to copy-paste mental models, as you're alluding to.
vikiomega9··on Show HN: Little Ball of Fur – A Python library for graph subsampling
Sorry, could you be more specific, do you mean his current work on Graph NN and representation learning?
vikiomega9··on The effects on cognition of sleeping 4 hours per night for 12-14 days
Could you point me to some of these studies, ie. one that's a good starting reference.

vikiomega9··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
That's not quite true, they let go of multiple strong performers.
vikiomega9··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
They are at Lyft which tries to solve hard problems like Pricing and Dispatch optimization.

For other, perhaps smaller, companies you still need a Data Analyst or someone who can read data and make sense of it, but not a Data Scientist who works in a silo and has a sexy job title.

vikiomega9··on Complexity Has to Live Somewhere
Great advice on immutability, separation of concerns/domain logic, and side effects. I think modern languages or tooling should somehow enforce this. I think a lot of code will be better off for it. Specific patterns/zen (like another comment below) is what helps.
vikiomega9··on Lyft lays off 17% of workforce, furloughs hundreds more
I work for Lyft and was part of this cut. I truly worked toward fixing things, and I don't want to sound salty here even though will, there's not much going on with Lyft or Uber to save in terms of tech. It's shoddy and useless. For the most part if Amazon got into the game now, and with their flywheel, they could eat Lyft alive and wait for Uber to bleed dry.
vikiomega9··on The third wave of open source migration
From your experiences, tell me more! How could this problem be avoided? How does one sniff out such glut?
