viccis··on MCP was always a bad idea?
Yeah but you're still assuming it's running on someone's machine with a CLI to even use.
viccis··on MCP was always a bad idea?
What if the agent doesn't have a CLI?
viccis··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Yep, exactly. People who aren't super familiar with American propaganda often don't appreciate this enough, but every stupid network here will feature you if you pissed off the other team, and when Biden's necrotic ass is overseeing our waning genocidaire state, anyone who speaks out against his baby annihilation tendencies is going to end up having to slum it up on Fox because they're desperate enough to feature you.
viccis··on MCP was always a bad idea?
Exactly. A lot of people complaining about MCP are doing so because their only interactions with LLMs are via big batteries including code harnesses and don't understand what kind of (usually much more domain-specific) agentic systems are being built. For example, "CLI vs MCP" doesn't make any sense whatsoever if the agent doesn't have access to a CLI!

MCP suffers from its harebrained choice early on to load everything into context up front.

I don't think that follows necessarily, especially not categorically.

I'm not the biggest fan of him, but him showing up on conservative outlets because the other ones wouldn't platform him (due to going against US Dept of State propaganda) does not mean he is "conservative".

Please make an actual argument; tell us what "conservative" views he holds.

viccis··on What happened to the Snowden archive
It's not a "false equivalence". Multiple people are trying to explain to you what "stateless" actually means and how's it's materially different than being a fugitive, but you are refusing to listen.

Thanks for responding. I ran it just now and it looks like it could be useful if I change and limit the scope of the kinds of actions I need. Here is a breakdown of where it struggled vs some local models (~8-12B parameters running on a 16GB Mac Mini or my desktop's 3080), bear in mind I had Claude integrate it into the benchmarks and this is its interpretation, not my own:

What it gets wrong:

- It copies numbers instead of converting them. "25 minute timer" becomes duration_seconds: 25, and "twelve minutes" becomes 120. The first one comes with 100% confidence.

- It picks the wrong action. "take the paper towels off the list" became an add. "remind me in 20 minutes" became a timer. "add five minutes to the pasta timer" became a new timer plus a cancel.

- It never declined anything with our full tool set. Background chatter became note_save "blue one" at 0.99 confidence. "play some jazz" became a screen card, and "wake me up at 6 30" became a 630-second timer.

- It can't use household context. Notes, timer names and reminder IDs have no place in its input. Passing them anyway made results worse (5 of 27 single-turn requests right, versus 8 of 27 without), so the backend now leaves them out.

- Follow-ups mostly broke. "take off the last one" removed the whole list.

I'll try to get something set up to try this out. I've been working on an ESP32 based Echo replacement that sends audio back to a backend server I run, and one question I had was whether models small enough to run on a Mac Mini or even smaller hardware are good enough to handle basic tool calling functionality with a bit of reasoning where needed.

I have a test suite that tries like ~36 different scenarios, including things like starting multiple timers, saying "actually cancel that timer" and whether it knows to do that one you just created. Basic decision making on top of tool calling. I found so far that, for example, Qwen3.8 on my local machine does pretty poorly even relative to Gemma4 E4B (~9.6gb) and that the best price/performance outcome I've found so far with openrouter is actually GPT Luna, but obviously I'd love to get something that works as well running locally for privacy reasons.

Would love to try this out, I'll just need to tweak my benchmarker to use however this serves it.

viccis··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
There's been some knot theory applied to molecule analysis chemistry as well as things like topological quantum field theory, with both of those being examples of fields that benefit greatly from previously unapplied mathematics introducing tools to use.
viccis··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
Depends. Do you think human mathematicians will be entirely useless for any kind of input into the act of doing mathematics? If not then we'd be advised, imo, to keep funding which is inherently just a training pipeline.

The person who might have made a mathematics breakthrough that results in some miraculous medical or other discovery will likely have decided it's not economically prudent to pursue a career (pure math academia) that the tech sages, in their all encompassing wisdom (exclusively over the next 1 to 2 financial quarters), have deemed worthless, and that instead he or she should just respond to that pesky Big Four recruiter who keeps dangling a cushy six figure internship.

The worst is when it walked through a dozen or so questions, and it decides to litter comments with "Per answer 7, ..." with no further context.

These kinds of situations are incredibly common and where the government stepping in is the solution, but we were cursed to encounter this particular challenge with the most venal administration in history at the helm.

Polars seems nice but in my experience using it, the "lazy" APIs would still immediately materialize a ton of stuff in memory and had very spotty support on what data formats and storage integrations were possible with scan_* functions (though that was half a year ago and the support is slowly improving). It's frustrating, I mean really frustrating, to think I could solve a lot of my "scan through heinous amounts of data without any memory hungry things like window aggregations without blowing out my memory" with Polars and then watch my scan_thisorthat() call result in instant memory usage ballooning.

DuckDB on the other hand is wonderful and truly doesn't use any more memory than it really needs to.

viccis··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
>Governments are invested in solving mathematical problems for practical purposes.

Very ignorant view of mathematics that also begs the question with an unspoken assumption of what a government is and wants while also ignoring the contingent nature of those things throughout history.

viccis··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
Anecdotally, I know a few people who spent decades working on and/or teaching middle eastern music in conservatories abroad, and they struggle greatly to find music departments in the US who will hire them. A problem I've seen firsthand is that there are a lot of senior professors who teach it hand wavy versions of it filtered through whatever books Euro orientalists wrote mid century and are threatened at the prospect of someone coming in there who has studied and practiced it for years in places where it's more of a living art form cutting into their position of expertise.

Where this ties in to your point is that part of the reason they really don't want experts is that they rarely have someone whose job it is to teach middle eastern music. They might have a guitar teacher with some experience with oud, a flute teacher who can passably play ney (usually with awful intonation), etc. For most schools, these other types of music are "add-ons" that they have their existing faculty teach.

viccis··on OpenAI Agents API
I get the same. It sits there and spins for a bit then as soon as it spits out something, my 5h is 5-10% lower, whether it's asking it to do code review over a significant code base or just asking it to change a config value.
viccis··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
At this school? Big four internships. Consider this a complete squandering of their potential (at least imo) These are mathematicians at top institutions, which is partly why they're being prodded for ideas, and getting the best and brightest to not take these consulting firms' offers was already a challenge.
viccis··on I think I hate the internet
I think you are ignoring McLuhan's very very famous point ("the medium is the message") which is that new forms of media do more than just allow us to extend ourselves in new ways; they change our mindset by enabling those new capabilities. It's not so much what we're using the media to communicate as it is what kind of communication that medium encourages. Television had disastrous consequences on what would seem to be unrelated behavior [1], including an increase in general antisocial behavior among children.

viccis··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Some mathematicians I know who've been following this have realized that they'd all gotten some emails from people they now know to be affiliated with OpenAI/Anthropic asking questions about their research in a way that seemed like scooping attempts.

Also, a lot of my mathematicians buddies have reported students basically asking if it's worth ever doing grad school for pure math, and even very motivated students are looking for other options now. It's not because they aren't passionate about it, it's that they don't want to work for another half decade or more just to have to start their careers all over.

All of this so that OpenAI and Anthropic can get into math result dick measuring to gas up their IPOs. Sickening.

viccis··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
Kinda weird because the pure math world doesn't have this concept of "lead authors" like other STEM areas do. Authors are alphabetically listed and there isn't generally this kind of hierarchy.
viccis··on Navier-Stokes – Tristan Buckmaster [pdf]
>After hearing of the rumor, OpenAI started researching Navier Stokes with a new internal model.

This is the most suspicious thing to me. If their chat data were available to the corpus to be trained on (I thought they claimed not to do this?) then it really might be as simple as querying the model with "describe recent work from Tristan Buckmaster" and it will spit out this problem and his approach. No need to directly read his user data.

This is basically just scooping, real scumbag behavior.
