vhf··on Build it with me: Bitcoin wallet for Mac
Well, thank you, I know how bitcoin works. :)

The blockchain does not store any IP address. Read about the protocol or read the specs or read the code, or easier : ask anybody.

Bitcoin is absolutely not anonymous, and not intended to be anonymous. Which does not mean that the IP address of the sender and/or receiver is stored into the blockchain. The blockchain contains txid, amount, addresses and timestamps, but no IP address.

To examplify what bitcoin.org says in your quote : If you open an account on anybitcoinstoreorwalletorexchange.com, which assigns you a deposit address or which allows you to withdraw bitcoin to one of your bitcoin address, then this website will obviously be able to match your bitcoin address to the IP you used to visit the website, which might not be in your best interest depending on the website intention. Therefore, you could use Tor. That is all.

To the point of "a new one each time you receive money", it would be better phrased as "each time you receive money from a new untrusted peer". Let's say I got an account on example.com, and want to withdraw bitcoin from this website for the first time. It is considered best practice to create a new address to receive these bitcoin. Then whenever I want to withdraw from this website again, I could use the same address. This is the reason why bitcoin addresses can be labeled in the bitcoin software. Think of the tuple (sender_address, receiver_address) as a private key for a specific transaction funnel.

> mask my IP to keep my actual IP from occurring in the blockchain.

The blockchain does not store any IP address.

> Needing to "create a new bitcoin address" for every transaction, also fishy.

Creating a new bitcoin address for every transaction is not recommended and not needed. So no, it's not fishy. On the contrary, having the possibility to generate different address and using one address for one addressee is quite smart and useful.

vhf··on Poll: "Giff" or "Jif"?
> QT should be pronounced "cute", but I say "queue-tee".

I think we would say "queue-tee" if it was QT instead of Qt. To me, "cute" makes more sense for "Qt".

vhf··on Show HN: Chrome Extension for the one thing I miss on HN
My favorite is Hacker News Enhancement Suite [1], for unread comment counts, voting on front page, highlight unread, inline comment, collapsible thread, etc.

vhf··on Building a Spreadsheet in 20 Minutes with Angular.js
You should add a <title> to your page. I bookmarked it and had to copy/paste from content to title.
vhf··on Show HN: Notforest - cleaning up the Web one page at a time
Great idea, works well on 4 sites out of the 5 I tried it on. Too bad it makes notforest.com completely blank and thus not readable at all.

I'll keep it anyway !

vhf··on Django Unchained – Introduction to Python and Django
I didn't get it when Google decided to name their language Go because it was awfully hard to google. Same here : the name isn't bad but will be impossible to google for anyone forgetting to add "python" to their request.

Anyway, great initiative, I'm looking forward to read it ! (star or bookmark it if you intend to find it next week) :)

vhf··on French ISP Removes Google Adsense From Websites
See, the ISP remotely upgraded all routers, activating the adblocker by default. You say "optional", but I'm not even sure there is an "opt-out".

Anyway, don't trust google translation. I found some info in english : http://www.fastcompany.com/3004452/french-isp-free-blocks-al... http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/3/3832126/french-isp-free-add...

vhf··on Do Devs Need Custom Linux Laptops? Dell Thinks So
Exactly. Lenovo was on the right track a few years ago with X200(s), providing 1440x900 on 12.3" with hardware very well supported on Linux.
vhf··on Nomic
I was talking about direct democraty, not taxes. Political systems where citizens propose laws that are voted by citizens, and where citizens propose to suppress laws and make all citizens vote on this suppression, by example.
vhf··on Nomic
The wikipedia page is said to describe a game, although it rather looks like a description of Switzerland's political system.
vhf··on Show HN: Interactive SICP
I came up with the same solution and had the same wrong result.
vhf··on An ABC proof too tough even for mathematicians
Perhaps is it not so premature, since this proof relies mainly of this new inter-universal geometry,

Take the Fermat-Wiles proof. It's probably the most significant number theory result of the last century, yet it doesn't contain new profound number theory. Its genius is the use of elliptic curves, which is algebraic geometry.

I'm not saying Mochizuki's proof doesn't contain new profound number theory, but this is a very possible outcome, we just don't know yet.

vhf··on An ABC proof too tough even for mathematicians
No, it should not.

vhf··on The Depressing Day After You Get TechCrunched
Link to the company looks less relevant since the article says it is loosely based on something that happens years ago.

There's a link to the company under the author's name on the top right, though. :)

vhf··on Israel live-tweets assault on Gaza
I mostly agree with your comment except for the first sentence.

The problem is that while Arafat officially recognized Israel in 1993, Israel never reciprocated. Would it still be war if Israel recognized the right for a Palestinian State to exist, and how this Palestinian demand for a right to have a state can be denied by people who asked for the exact same thing and obtained it (leading to the existence of Israel) a few decades before ?

vhf··on Ask HN: Where have all the comments gone?
I noticed the exact same thing but didn't think it was worth a post. Glad you did !

I even checked wikipedia to see if I had not missed some US Holiday.

November 13 is the World Kindness Day, but I guess it's not related. :)

Good questions and great answers !

About 5), (and possibly last paragraph of 2+3)), I would like to see all RAW files supported. You mentionned DNG, I guess you're a Nikon user. I'm not. And I'm right your target user : (I'm Swiss,) not a pro, not looking for an on-line portfolio, but former photographer now doing it as a hobby. When not shooting film I only shoot RAW, and mine are .cr2, not .dng.

Long-term archiving of my digital pictures (be it png, jpg, cr2, png, scanner raw format) has been a concern for quite a long time. I have been a paying flickr user for a few years now but it doesn't fit my needs as I cannot store there my RAW files. I would definately pay 8$/m to have a safe backup somewhere, and your display / scaling / serving service would be a huge +. :)

vhf··on Tell HN: CTO of Twitpic, in SF 11/9 to 11/18, want to meet up?
Can't make it since I'm 9.8k km away, but still I take the occasion to thank you for sharing so much relevant stuff on your svbtle blog !

Enjoy SF

vhf··on Ask HN: Tell us about your side projects.
Great project ! I really like both the idea and how you implemented it.

After clicking on a found camera pin-point, I was a bit disappointed : I closed the left frame showing details of said camera and hoped for the map to show every other pin-points again. I tried zooming out, before understanding I had to either go back in my browser or to chose a top-menu item. IMO you should automatically go back to the "whole map" upon closing the specific left frame.

vhf··on Re: “Hey:” – An Analysis of the Obama/Romney Emails
The one I use does, yes, and probably most of them do. And I really like this feature. But I'm certain that if I wanted to support a candidate and subscribed to his newsletter, I would allow all images from sender because I would want to see the pictures, or just because the newsletter layout looks better with images.

And people managing these kind of newsletters probably know that. They design nice layouts for their newsletters, with images and fancy stuff to be "visually friendly". And they know people will want to let pictures in, and they know they will then have the possibility to track views. They even include the infamous if this email isn't properly displayed, see it here [http: //link/mail/online/?here_is_who_clicked_this_link=your_name] (usually more subtle than that.)

vhf··on Re: “Hey:” – An Analysis of the Obama/Romney Emails
(I just noticed OP is the author, so I'll put my comment here) [edit : correction, OP is the author's brother, sorry :]

I'm absolutely no mailing specialist, but here is my take :

Your study is quite interesting, but has it any value without you saying which mails your read when ?

Tracking if an email has been read or not is quite simple, providing the email is sent as HTML and the one who reads it is no privacy-nerd (noscript, ghostery, other ways to block external ressources, highly secure mailbox softwares, etc). What if you regularly "read" Obama's mails and not Romney's ones ?

If I were to manage this kind of mailing campain, I'd probably put on hold for a while email addresses who haven't read the last X mails. On the contrary, I would go on sending mails to people reading them. Etc.

Please tell us what you did "read" and when, and what you did not.

vhf··on Ask HN: Which startups are providing services to professional photographers?
"serving the needs of pro photographers" is a little vague, but I'll try to answer anyway :

Top¹ portfolio building/hosting/sharing : ProPhoto [1], 500px [2], behance.net [3]

Printing+Selling services : bigcartel [10], platform-photo [11], prints995 [12], etsy [13], sssquare [14]

[2] http://500px.com

[3] http://behance.net

[11] http://platform-photo.com

[12] http://prints995.com

[13] http://etsy.com

¹Top used, not "best services". I'm sure they are great, but I still prefer building my own private solution, let's say WordPress. ;)

vhf··on Remind HN: Vote
I guess it's not a matter of unanimity.

Fact is, would voters be European people, Obama would easily win.[1]

vhf··on Ancient tsunami devastated Lake Geneva shoreline
I think there are good reasons to prefer "Lake Léman".

The lake is split between France and French-speaking part of Switzerland. In French, the name is Léman. I do think using the local name is better, even more when this local name is acknowledged (en.wikipedia shows both Geneva and Léman).

To me, born and raised in Romandy, "Lake Geneva" feels like "Tokyo Country" for Japan or "California Ocean" for the Pacific.

vhf··on The Russian underground economy has democratized cybercrime
Probably because hacking into a gmail / facebook / twitter account is usually done by gathering informations about the victim by social engineering, and then trick the "lost password" form to get into the account.

Remember the guy whose macbook, ipad and iphone got wiped through iCloud ?

vhf··on Ancient tsunami devastated Lake Geneva shoreline
Please stop calling it "Lake Geneva", its name is "Lake Léman".
