vga805··on Why Svelte is our choice for a large web project
I think this mindset is outdated. Svelte itself is already a few years old.
vga805··on UC Santa Cruz fires 54 grad students who were striking for higher pay
Strange. every university im familiar with has grad students teaching courses, not just TAing. i did it myself.
vga805··on Clojure: A Lisp that wants to spread
reframe is just the front end though isnt it? i think this is not the crud/rails alternative the op is talking about
vga805··on Show HN: Word Champions, a word game written in ClojureScript
I will echo the other repely. in particular, reframe has been a joy to work with and imo made me a better js & react developer
vga805··on Things I wish I knew about state management when I started writing React apps
I don't think this is really a counter if you're talking about "3 giant forms each with over a dozens inputs." Yeah that sounds like a good use case to learn a library.

I guess my larger point that might not have been emphasized well enough is that recommending using a form library for _any_ form seems misguided.

vga805··on Things I wish I knew about state management when I started writing React apps
You use a global db atom in re-frame for global state, but there's nothing stopping you from using a reagent atom local to a component, is there?

I never thought of the existence of the global db as the thing that ALL state should go in., or is that a community best practice?

Edit: after digging through the re-frame docs themselves, you can see here that local reagent atoms are used for local state even with the global app db: https://github.com/day8/re-frame/blob/69a3fcd411369fff65404e...

vga805··on Things I wish I knew about state management when I started writing React apps
What's the deal with the recommendation to use some library for managing forms? I've been working with React almost since its initial release and I've built some pretty complex forms... yet form libraries remain the one thing I've never really seen a need for.

At the very least, using something like formik shouldn't be a necessity. There should be some qualifier that it's only really needed for very complex forms. Or am I missing something?

vga805··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
better yet, squat presses and deadlifts
vga805··on Happiness is more like poetry than algorithms
This is one of my favorite hn comments ever.
vga805··on Instagram took down private unofficial APIs via DMCA
unofficial APIs or unofficial documentation about the APIs? what exactly was this, and if the latter, are the APIs still available?
vga805··on Fancy Clojure REPL
Thank you! I've been using calva for two years now at my current job. I love it. Very nicely done.
vga805··on A different kind of personal website
Author here. This website is an art project that I've put together the last few days.

This is part therapy, an exploration of my own mental health, and part artistic exploration.

vga805··on Into the Personal-Website-Verse (2019)
My personal website is my therapy. It's an art project. It's an attempt to think much differently about what a personal website should be:

vga805··on MIT 6.004: Computation Structures
That sounds pretty awesome, does anyone happen to have a list of the papers the class covers, I can't seem to find it online.
vga805··on Goodbye, Clean Code
Thank you Dan, your posts have been a great source for a lot of us out here.
vga805··on War Is a Racket (1933)
Smedley Butler is like a God figure to Marines, second only to Chesty Puller. I've often referenced this when arguing about the military-industrial complex with people who assume that if you criticize military spending you are somehow anti-military. I don't know if it has any effect.

Some might think it's a fallacious argument from authority, but I don't think it is. Fortunately, or unfortunately?, the people I tend to argue with about this stuff likely don't know what that fallacy is.

vga805··on Dive into Deep Learning
And, what makes me want to dive into this the most, there's some Clojure! Will definitely have to take a look a this one. Thanks.
vga805··on Lambda Calculus (Kinda) Implemented in React Components
OP here.

I put together this project over the weekend. There's little practical value here other than being a fun learning exercise.

It's still a work in progress and I'd like to turn it into a conference presentation maybe. Feedback, questions, etc. welcomed.

it's probably necessary. and i must ask, you've studied philosophy? that's the only time i see people talking about "necessary and sufficient conditions"

Can you expand on this, I am quite curious.
vga805··on Dan Abramov Deactivates His Twitter
I avoid twitter like the cesspool it is. Thanks for the warning.
vga805··on Show HN: Firestorm – An ORM for Firestore
Our engineering team has a #naming slack channel. It actually gets a pretty good amount of use and it's been pretty helpful.
vga805··on Dan Abramov Deactivates His Twitter
What is the significance of this?

I understand he is a core team member, but... so?

vga805··on Why Clojure?
I have had a similar experience over the past 15 years. re-frame is absolutely wonderful.
vga805··on Lisp is not based on the Lambda Calculus
That seems likely. But then, I would think LISP does realize the lambda calculus in some sense. It naturally lends itself to this sort of exercise and it's really successful.
vga805··on Lisp is not based on the Lambda Calculus
The post quotes McCarthy:

"one of the myths concerning LISP that people think up or invent for themselves becomes apparent, and that is that LISP is somehow a realization of the lambda calculus, or that was the intention. The truth is that I didn't understand the lambda calculus, really" - John McCarthy

So there are a two issues here, 1) whether or not it was McCarthy's intention to realize the Lambda Calculus in LISP, and 2) whether or not LISP is such a realization. Or at least some kind of close realization.

The answer to 1 is clearly no. This doesn't imply an answer to 2 one way or another.

If 2 isn't true, what explains the widespread belief? Is it really just that he, McCarthy, borrowed some notation?

vga805··on A curated list of philosophy resources
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is the one stop shop for most purposes.

With any one philosopher or topic as a starting point, the additional resources and bibliographies will be about as good as you can get for a curated list.
