vestrigi··on Tabloid: The Clickbait Headline Programming Language
Lovely creation you made! I started to wonder if some kind of template could be made from this that just requires you to enter your individual keyword names for the basic operations, regarding that it is just interpreted by javascript. I'm not at all into esoteric languages so I don't know if something like this exists. This approach just seems so simple to me, especially in case you want to create some more languages just for fun or want to open the doors to more beginners. The only boring thing would be that essentially each language created with the template would work the same way unless you modify that template.
vestrigi··on Turn recipe websites into plain text
I was already excited when Apple showcased an Extension for the new Safari in their keynote that did something similar.

I wonder if any of these websites will find a way to prevent these recipe scrapers from working so that people read the damn ads in their blog texts. Instapaper‘s article extraction gets rejected from time to time and Safari‘s reader mode too, but it’s mostly on major news sites.

vestrigi··on Ask HN: What’s a big trend we should all be following?
I think self-hosting should be even more "plug and play" to be appealing to more users. During the lockdown I was looking for simple board-like games that could be played over the internet. There were a few promising ones that were only playable on a single hosted domain that hat a capacity of 100 parties. I thought that it couldn't be too asking for the most basic cloud server hardware to serve this game for a few people. I think it should be way more easy and straight-forward for the average user to try out some server application on your own server, be it for playing, collaborative work or organization.

I think Owncloud with its market place is a good example of an engagement into this direction but it looks like it's more like a garden of apps fitted for the platform. What we need is maybe an web-browser accessible hub where we can place or point to an app and quickly configure it to run on the server. SSH optional.

It's a bummer that that there's little demand and awareness for this, especially since we're using our devices in a world of internet services that are either paid or a privacy concern.

Using Wikipedia with English as a second language in general is wonderful. If a german article is not complex enough, I continue with the English article which is often more rich in information. On the other way around, if an English article is to hard to grasp for me, I switch to the German article and quickly get the basics. After that, I continue in English if there were still some questions left open. Of course there are topics that are best to be read in German because that’s the language of the people that spark the most interest in that topic.

Of course applies to speakers of every other language that speak English as a second language or any other language that is well represented on Wikipedia.

vestrigi··on Ask HN: Name one idea that changed your life
I would argue that it should only be done if you know it makes you significantly more unhappy. If everyone would abstain from the news, no one would be held responsible for anything. While I agree that most of the news are not for me, the small percentage that alarms me and makes me go research and talk about issues is worth it. I can never know what might be concerning to me outside of my interest bubble.
vestrigi··on Ad blocking with Raspberry Pi and Pi-hole
Modern TVs actually reached such low prices because almost all of them are paying for production post purchase with user data. So that's generally a great idea to lock it up with pi-hole or to not even connect it at all and use an external streaming box. I think this already made the round on HN https://phys.org/news/2019-02-tvs-cheap-smart-tv-extra.html
