Which just muddies the waters because if collective bargaining is banned then the unions are toothless. The correct comparison is collective bargaining legal vs illegal.
verall··on The KeePassXC Kerfuffle
> the only users who are actually at risk of a surprise change to the keepassxc package are those running testing or unstable releases

> when Debian Trixie is released, upgrades and new installs of the keepassxc package will receive a transitional package that prompts them to decide between "full" and "minimal" packages

If you are running testing or unstable and not reading NEWS files then I think it's your fault - or is that victim blaming :P

verall··on The KeePassXC Kerfuffle
Did you read the part about the virtual package prompting users to choose if they want the full version or not?

verall··on Department of Justice says Boeing may be criminally liable in 737 MAX crashes
> It's just not described by...

Yes, I know - I think I read the parent comment as "If it is physically and financially [reasonable] to make your product safer, you do it"

This is basically what I was taught working in automotive safety.

> ... what's the cut-off? There must be a cut-off...

There's no hard $$ or other cutoff though, it's a soft cutoff that may come down to engineers and/or management arguing about what is really safer.

> Boeing has a slightly different problem in that they actively made something less safe and lied about it.

Yes I agree, for Boeing it is different, reading about their management's intention destruction of positive safety culture is sickening.

verall··on Wind farms can offset their emissions within two years, new study shows
> What does this mean?

The powers that be are hiding our most renewable resource - ourselves. We just someone to make a tiktok dance out of jumping into the bioreactor and then we won't need any evil wind turbines or PVs anymore.

I think it's fun to imagine that this solution you're miming at is closer to soylent green rather than only-viable-through-subsidies nuclear.

This isn't what the parent comment is saying. Functional safety is an entire discipline. It neither results in titanium light switches nor uses "value of a human life" calculations. The scenario described by the parent would be a civil and potentially criminal liability.
verall··on Flatpak – a security nightmare – 2 years later (2020)
You can change sudo into an alias that steals your sudo password and then does whatever else.

Not that it makes a huge difference in practice, IMO. The apps most users run (i.e. distro apps) are plenty trusty for normal threat models. Apps that run real untrusted code (web browser) have their own sandboxes. And people with more serious threat models can run qubes or tails or whatever

verall··on Microsoft's $1M Vote of Confidence in Rust's Future
I think this is a really fun complaint because iostreams is terrible and has no reason to be terrible, but if you use C++ in the day to day it just does not matter. There are so many other problems. If your first complaint is about iostreams you probably did not get past hello world.

The medium income is about $48k vs £38k which is much more realistic than averages when a select few make millions per year. Healthcare costs can easily exceed this difference.

All of them and also seed oils.

verall··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
I dunno, I don't think it implies that at all. It seems to imply that scientists have confirmed that growth is still occurring at that point, and not the other way around, especially given the rest of the article.
verall··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
Literally from that wiki article:

> There is no actual evidence suggesting that impulse control only finishes developing in humans in the twenties. It is a common misconception in popular psychology that the brain only fully develops by 25.[13] This may stem from a misinterpretation or oversimplification of studies which determined that development of the prefrontal cortex continues into the mid-twenties

verall··on Yes, social media is a cause of the epidemic of teenage mental illness
The brain never stops developing, why 25? Where does everyone get this darn 25 is when you're grown number from?
verall··on FCC chair rejects call to impose Universal Service fees on broadband
Yeah, I know, it sucks
verall··on FCC chair rejects call to impose Universal Service fees on broadband
There is no broken budget, the US government isn't a household, it controls its own fiat currency.

Projects which increase economic activity (like rural broadband) can be revenue positive without fees or anything.

Now if the money all gets swallowed up by a huge ISP that doesn't actually give underserved people broadband, then everyone loses and its just corporate sponsorship.

verall··on How might software development have unfolded if CPU speeds were 20x slower?
Spotify just uses electron, if you want your app to look like an electron app, use that. I think it's hideous.
verall··on Airlines in the U.S. charge separately for checked bags in order to reduce tax
AA will make you pay extra to "choose your own seat" ($75-$150 extra per ticket for basic economy -> main cabin) and then block off all but 3 rows as "premium seats" so that you can pay $30+/leg/person to sit with your party/travel companion after paying already paying extra. Better get to the airport early and beg the gate attendant or spend an additional $240+ (1 layover, 2 passengers)!

If you book a codeshare they don't even try to let you choose, they simply put in the fine print that the choosing your own seat perk "may not apply to partner airlines".

I hate it.

You can get really fancy food for ~$100/person in austin like barley swine or Uroko. You can get fantastic tacos for less than $3 each.

The market gives you the opportunity to overpay if you want to, though. It's not a representative example.

verall··on America is divided over major efforts to rewrite child labor laws
tatsuya is old news, their tonkatsu broth is too thick IMO. Lot's of new ramen places to check out - Sazan (different style, really good, reasonable $), marufuku (overpriced but better than tatsuya), ichiumi (quite good and reasonable $)
verall··on Smart TV is snooping on you. How to limit the personal data it gathers
If it tries to use Bluetooth to connect to your phone, that requires precise location permissions because BT beacons can be exploited to get your precise location.

It's very frustrating.

> tough for me to stomach a $100+ per person bill at even a reasonable (i.e. not super fancy) restaurant

food has gotten more expensive but it's not that expensive. $25 entrees is unaffordable for most people, how are you getting to $100/head at reasonable restaurants? Does everyone order the ribeye?

verall··on The Canadian government's plan to plant two billion trees
I guess since I'm in the states the bar is below the floor but $500/yr dental reimbursement for kids and pharamacare covering contraception and diabetes medication sounds incredibly helpful for low income people.
