verall··on Samsung may end SATA SSD production soon
There were even M.2 PCIe-connected AHCI drives - both not-SATA and not-NVMe. Samsung SM951 was one. You can find them on ebay but not otherwise.
verall··on How well do you know C++ auto type deduction?
Wow I really thought this would be a compile error. The implicit cast here really is a footgun. Looks like '-Wrange-loop-construct' (included in -Wall) does catch it:

> warning: loop variable 'v' of type 'const std::pair<std::__cxx11::basic_string<char>, int>&' binds to a temporary constructed from type 'std::pair<const std::__cxx11::basic_string<char>, int>' [-Wrange-loop-construct] 11 | for (const std::pair<std::string, int>& v: m) {

As they say, the power of names...

verall··on Claude Code's DX is too good. And that's a problem
Lots of things - typical llm em-dash situations although using dash. Lists of 3s after a colon where the 3 items aren't great. Short sentences for "impact" that sounds kind of like a high school essay i.e. "God level engineer...Zero ego."

I cannot at all understand writing an essay and then having an llm "tighten up the sentences" which instead just makes it sound like slop generated from a list of bullets

verall··on The realities of being a pop star
Your point is clear, but Charli does a lot of production on her albums, so I'm not sure she's the one to make this point about. She's not a once in a lifetime producing genius like Sophie, but she doesn't claim to be. Yung Lean did not produce the sound that made him famous either.

I think in the modern day, due to Internet, access to DAWs, etc, a lot of pop stars actually do/did much more of their own writing and production, see Billie & Finneas or Chappel Roan. It's just much more accessible, there's lots of pretty faces on social media so to really break out, you either need some real connections or real chops.

verall··on The realities of being a pop star
Do you think Charli's music is unoriginal and commercial?
verall··on Why don't people return their shopping carts?
If there is a right turn only lane, and a straight lane, and the right turn only lane is backed up with people queuing, you are not making traffic go faster by merging in at the last second. You are slowing down a bunch of people trying to turn, and blocking the people trying to go straight.

You can change straight/right/left here and it all holds. Zipper merges are for merges, when 2 lanes of traffic become one, and everyone merging early is a little bit worse. Above is just selfish.

verall··on You can now buy used Ford vehicles on Amazon
A monopoly in the market for YKK branded zippers? One can buy zippers from lots of different manufacturers.

verall··on Things that aren't doing the thing
Yes in all the environments I've been in this is nearly the entire job. But I work in embedded...

Need to verify feature X - okay, let me just -

- Find the list of CPs needed

- Get a recent source tree

- Acquire a board

- Flash board

- Get CPs

- Manually assign IP and bring up SSHD to the device so I'm not working over serial

- Build and SCP the rebuilt thing to the device

- Find whatever byzantine command you need to run it to verify it

- Of course it doesn't work, ask your coworker

- Oh did you remember to flub the flabnabber? echo "1" > /dev/i2c5 then restart the flabnabber-daemon

- Run the fking thing and it works

- 3 hours has passed

Wow is working in embedded great. But I think that this is basically everything. The time isn't building the shelf, it's figuring out exactly which hinges are right for what I want it to do, it's measuring and measuring and sanding, it's multiple runs to home depot.

ALL of this _is_ "doing the thing". They are all prerequisites and as such are part of the task.

verall··on Don't Post Passive-Aggressive Webpages
I am already wrong since I am replying to an AI blog post - but -

The point of these is that it is a widespread annoyance. No, it's not nice to send someone a link to nohello.net, but it is letting them know that you are annoyed.

If every time someone Slacks you "Hello", you send this link, you're probably an asshole. If you send this to your boss, or to senior people in your org, you are a moron.

But everyone knows the serial "hello"-ers, and if you tell them nicely "Please just ask your question", they will just say "Yes of course", and then do the exact same thing next time. By sending the link, you are telling them, YOU ARE ANNOYING ME, without having to be so direct as saying something like, "If you Slack "hello" to me while I'm working outside of my hours on a customer deliverable one more time I will lose it with you".

It _is_ a shaming. It _is_ a talking down to. It is saying "get a clue".

But I have slack conversations that are just "Hello" - "Hello" (weeks pass) "Hello" - "Hi" (days pass) "Hello" - "Hi".

They do not have a specific question for you. They are looking for someone to dump their work on, and they pick whoever lets them know they are available, by replying

verall··on Why is there no Uber for plumbing/HVAC? (and why there ought to be)
You have to find someone who is local and stands by their work (this can be tough but talk to neighbors/friends/etc). Then treat them well by always paying a tip over the quoted price. Honest businesspeople exist, they will remember your generosity, stand by their work, and go the extra mile to make it right if they make a mistake.

It's relationships, not legal guarantees. There's not enough paper in the world to protect you from a dishonest contractor or tradesman. Finding someone honest and then overpaying is the premium option.

verall··on Why is there no Uber for plumbing/HVAC? (and why there ought to be)
I think this is how most homeowners hire this type of people, they either "have a guy" or they ask their friends/neighbors if they "have a guy". I have an HVAC guy who is miles better than the HVAC company with ~50 techs that I had come out before I found him. But if I needed some plumbing work done, I'd ask my neighbors, since I've never gotten plumbing done before.

If neither of these they fall back to advertising, door-to-door sales, classifieds, google reviews.

verall··on Criticisms of “The Body Keeps the Score”
> A lot of people just want to be a victim. They want to be special. They want sympathy.

I dunno, in my experience, not really a lot of people?

And the people that did - and yes, they absolutely exist - seem to have some kind of disorder. They all probably would have benefited from therapy and/or medication. They probably do need sympathy (maybe not the way they wanted), may or may not have been victims, and are sort of special cases.

Most people just want to be normal, to have a job, to go see movies, to play games, to spend time with friends, partners, lovers, family.

This is just my life's experience though. Maybe I'm the weird one.

verall··on Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?
What political goals do you suppose they were trying to accomplish by restricting public gathering establishments? Is the governor of California secretly a Republican trying to help create right wing talking points?
verall··on Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?
It does not make 0 sense.

A liquor store or dispensary functions just fine with as low as 3-5 customers in the store. A church with only 3-5 patrons allowed at a time is effectively closed for most purposes.

It is literally a gathering space.

verall··on Who benefits from the MAHA anti-science push?
A church is literally a place for mass assembly, while a liquor store or dispensary can easily be configured for social distancing, i.e. only let up to N customers in the store at a time depending on the size.

But just think how good of a talking point this is!

Bad government stop CHURCH allow LIQUOR and DRUGS! Want to corrupt your CHILDREN, steal them from GODS arms and deliver to SATAN!

verall··on PCIe 8.0 announced by the PCI-Sig will double throughput again
Do you mean the new one? The older ones have been around for so long you can buy off-leases of them: https://www.etb-tech.com/nvidia-dgx-1-ai-gpu-server-2-x-e5-2...
verall··on PCIe 8.0 announced by the PCI-Sig will double throughput again
If you look at a any of the nvidia DGX boards it's already pretty close.

PCIe is a standard/commodity so that multiple vendors can compete and customers can save money. But at 8.0 speeds I'm not sure how many vendors will really be supplying, there's already only a few doing serdes this fast...

> Another rather interesting thing is that they tend to gravitate towards sweep the errors under the rug kind of coding which is disastrous. e.g. "return X if we don't find the value so downstream doesn't crash".

Yes, these are painful and basically the main reason I moved from Claude to Gemini - it felt insane to be begging the AI - "No, you actually have to fix the bug, in the code you wrote, you cannot just return some random value when it fails, it actually has to work".
