verall··on TSA lines are so out of control that travelers are hiring line-sitters
By your own numbers - 60k employees just doesn't touch a jobs program in a country of 350M people. The point of a jobs program is to provide jobs.

TSA was created to accomplish a goal - security theater (mostly), preventing another 9/11 (maybe more in theory than in practice), etc.

The New Deal WPA, according to wikipedia, supplied about 3M jobs at its peak in 1938, when the population was ~130M.

2.3% of the population vs 0.017%.

Also empirically - if it was a jobs program, it would be way better staffed..

It's not nearly enough jobs to be a jobs program
verall··on Atlassian says it had right to fire engineer for suggesting CEO is 'rich jerk'
Also from the article:

> At a March 3 hearing in Austin, a National Labor Relations Board attorney said the fired software engineer, Denise Unterwurzacher, had been acting in the spirit of Atlassian’s own stated “Open Company, No Bullshit” philosophy

I think if you have a "Open Company, No Bullshit" philosophy in your company handbook, then you can't claim "No, not like that..." when called on your BS.

If their company policy was "always obey legal orders from superiors" instead then I think they have a much clearer case at firing for cause.

verall··on Passengers who refuse to use headphones can now be kicked off United flights
From what I can tell, if no rule is enforced, about 2-5% of people think it's totally normal to scroll tiktok or instagram at full volume in public.

So on a crowded bus you've normally got 1 or 2. Behavior is actually much better on airplanes, usually (maybe 1-2 in ~150 passenger plane), and I have never seen someone who did not silence their phone after being asked politely by the attendant.

verall··on Austin’s surge of new housing construction drove down rents
Austin literally had density increases and house prices are down. The original article is literally the example.
verall··on Austin’s surge of new housing construction drove down rents
Houston has a very high density of delicious food. The traffic is horrible but if there was a big investment into public transit, I think it would be a very nice place to live.

verall··on BC got rid of Daylight Savings
I'm a night owl and daylight time does not make my life hell, kids don't walk to school in the US anymore, and yes, experiencing the daylight for 2 more months of the year is worth it.
verall··on BC got rid of Daylight Savings
Tracking solar time would mean it's equivalently light out at 5AM and at 7PM. Nearly noone is awake at 5AM. Nearly everyone is awake at 7PM. You can wave your arms around and say "well then why don't people wake up earlier", but they have jobs and stuff. The "scientific evidence" for standard time is flimsy.
verall··on BC got rid of Daylight Savings
I'd rather have it switch than do permanent standard time. It's not good to end your workday in total darkness if you can avoid it. It's nice to wake up in early darkness and see the sun rise. Best would be permanent daylight time.
verall··on Show HN: OxiMedia – Pure Rust Reconstruction of FFmpeg and OpenCV
I dug into this for a minute since I am sort of qualified. Only read through code, I have not tried to run it.

The mass of it is incredible, but it's a bit hard to tell what is an AI hallucination.

Digging in at random, it appears real, but it doesn't smell right for code of this mass. Most of the code seems to exist as it describes - which is an insane quantity. Everything seems to be what you would get if you asked AI to write it - for example, I looked through tonemapping and it appears to implement a small set of textbook tonemapping algos. In code that is really used, I expect to see something more purpose driven, not sure how to better say it. But an AI when asked to "handle tonemapping" would just pick a few literature methods and implement.

One random pick was "oximedia-gaming" which it said was stable with nvenc support. I wanted to check this out because I've called nvenc from C++ before and it was hard. The nvenc support is a no-op. So that's not quite right.

If (and it's a huge if), this code really works as it says, and it's written mostly by LLMs (it appears to be), then this is a huge testament to the value highly structured environment like Rust provides to the LLM.

I shudder to imagine the token costs...

verall··on GPT‑5.3 Instant
Because "Caucasians", in English, effectively means "white people", exactly as above described, and in common usage is never referring to people actually from the Caucasus?
verall··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time
No, I hate standard time, because in winter the sun sets at 4 or 5, when it could set at 5 or 6, i.e. daylight when leaving work.

I do not care if the sun is up as I shuffle groggily into the building. I don't think I'm alone.

verall··on How to stop being boring
> "be someone worth talking to" and "don't project neediness"

Doesn't come off like a creep.

> signals very clearly you don't really give much of a shit about talking to her, and your social status is higher than hers

Comes off like a creep.

One that cannot tell the difference probably comes off like a creep.

my understanding is that they can hold you for a couple days without charges for your insubordination but as a citizen they have to let you back into the country or officially arrest you, try to get an actual warrant, etc.

> The phrase "Chinese Mainland" when used in English comes loaded with the suggestion that Taiwan is rightfully part of China — it is an unavoidable implication.

I'm really curious - what people did you get this idea from? I've never heard this before. I have heard "mainland China" to mean, specifically, "China, not Hong Kong or Macau", from:

- Taiwanese people

- Hong Kong people

- Mainland Chinese people

- Taiwanese-americans

- Chinese-americans (immigrated from the mainland)

It's just mainland China (大陆). I have never met Chinese or Taiwanese people who feel this is a politically loaded term.

> In the future we'll question why we didn't move to WASM as the universal executable format sooner

I hope not, my laptop is slow enough as it is.

verall··on Understanding C++ Ownership System
If you have requirements for high performance then the traditional C++ "ownership model" (I would say a better description is "ownership strategy") is definitely "slow". It's pretty "safe" in that you usually aren't going to leak a bunch with it but bull allocations, arenas, and freelists are all potentially faster. And you wouldn't use them if they were slower since they're (usually) more to deal with.

But even in software using these strategies, they probably will be using different ownership strategies in different parts of the code. Once you're writing high performance code, you will use specific strategies that give you the best results. But it's completey domain specific.

verall··on Iran is likely jamming Starlink
There's a big gap between "national firewalls shouldn't exist" and "country should invade/"liberate" another country to prevent national firewall (or insert other disliked policy)".

So to respond directly:

> Why should anybody trust them with another country?

They should not and should not need to trust them with another country

> would it be okay for china to liberate the USA

no, it wouldn't. But if China felt that the USA gov't was like, not cool, they could impose sanctions or not trade with USA.

verall··on Caltrain shows why every region should be moving toward regional rail
The Austin train you are talking about is heavy rail. Not to be confused with Austin light rail which is Coming Soon (TM).

It's still more reliable than the busses. I think it's pretty fun.

verall··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
But time I spend asking is time I could have been writing exactly what I wanted in the first place, if I already did the planning to understand what I wanted. Once I know what I want, it doesn't take that long, usually.

Which is why it's so great for prototyping, because it can create something during the planning, when you haven't planned out quite what you want yet.

verall··on C++ says “We have try... finally at home”
This is correct - it does get easy to read but you are constantly considering the above semantics, often needing to check reference or compiler explorer to confirm.

Unless you are many of my coworkers, then you blissfully never think about those things, and have Cursor reply for you when asked about them (-:
