venturecruelty··on Toll roads are spreading in America
You're being downvoted by people for whom this would be incredibly inconvenient.
venturecruelty··on What happened to all the gold Spain got from the New World? (1985)
A solid 50% of this entire thread is people arguing about inflation and bikeshedding the concept of money. Amazing. (COVID gets an honorable mention. Six years on now, but hey. Stay mad.)
venturecruelty··on What happened to all the gold Spain got from the New World? (1985)
No, inflation is just an increase in prices. Insisting it is only due to an increase in the money supply is an RW talking point.
venturecruelty··on Inside the proton, the ‘most complicated thing you could possibly imagine’ (2022)
Not sure what this has to do with the article, it just seems like a nitpick. What did science do to you?
venturecruelty··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
Can we please stop the tone-policing, please? It's not helpful. Not everything needs Wikipedia-style citation, and this particular rhetorical trick is extremely passive-aggressive.
venturecruelty··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
No. No, no, no. Git is a fantastic choice if you want a supply chain nightmare and then Leftpad every week forever.
venturecruelty··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
This is why I don't use programming languages that do that.
venturecruelty··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
>I don’t know what you mean by software houses, but every consumer facing software product I’ve worked on has tracked things like startup time and latency for common operations as a key metric.

Then respectfully, uh, why is basically all proprietary software slow as ass?

venturecruelty··on Building an AI agent inside a 7-year-old Rails monolith
By the guidelines as written, it isn't. By the guidelines as mysteriously and generously interpreted by the hall monitors, it's the most beautiful thing to ever exist on God's green earth. Nothing says "hacker spirit" like waffle-stomping AI into software that was already working just fine.
venturecruelty··on Building an AI agent inside a 7-year-old Rails monolith
But not without using a thousand gallons of water and propping up Nvidia shares.
venturecruelty··on US sanctions EU government officials behind the DSA
I guarantee you half of America would support this, and the other half would also support this.
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
Why are people so determined to just shill for companies? Do you know how many people are unemployed for Christmas today, while you're out here tasting shoe leather for these organizations with more money than God?

They're not going to take pity on you, you know, no matter how much you grovel and beg.

venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
"Just exit the rat race", says someone not facing repossession and foreclosure.
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
Because context is hard, I guess, my point is that "exiting the rat race" is generally something that only people with Mountain View addresses and opinions like "400k TC really isn't THAT much, if you think about it" tend to be able to do.
venturecruelty··on Seven diabetes patients die due to undisclosed bug in Abbott's glucose monitors
HN School of Law: you can win big legal cases that don't exist on nerd technicalities that don't work in courtrooms that aren't real. Also you can pass their version of the Bar for $99 and your e-mail address.
venturecruelty··on Seven diabetes patients die due to undisclosed bug in Abbott's glucose monitors
This is such a bizarre gotcha in a world of rapidly decreasing technical and civil rights. I'm still waiting for someone here to pop out of the gallery during one of these trials going "well, akshually...", and turning everything around. Doesn't seem to be moving the needle, as it were.
venturecruelty··on Seven diabetes patients die due to undisclosed bug in Abbott's glucose monitors
Wouldn't be HN without knowing everything about something without having ever used it or engaged in it!
venturecruelty··on Archiving Git branches as tags
Believe it or not, some people need to use software more than six months old.
venturecruelty··on Archiving Git branches as tags
Can't solve culture problems with technology, but we all know that by now, right?
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
Some want luxuries like insulin.
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
How much does food and electricity cost for you right now?
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
I mean, if the current Kafkaesque nightmare isn't working, then yes? You might as well read chicken entrails, at this point. At least then you'd get some diversity, if nothing else.

But the actual solution is to not let bean counters and bootcampers do the hiring, but we're a few too many programmer-generations away from anyone who actually knows what they're doing being left at most of these companies, so.

I recommend making furniture.

venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
If only there were some sort of way employees could get together and like... I don't know, use their labo- I mean, work energy as lever- I mean, to convince management to recognize their uni- I mean, get their boss to pay them more.
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
Career is a made-up game, but man, being homeless and hungry sure does suck, eh?
venturecruelty··on How I Left YouTube
Is this why YouTube kinda sucks now?
venturecruelty··on Don't Become the Machine
Welcome to Standup! Choose your opponent!

- Guy who spends 20 of the 15 minutes being way too detailed about his work.

- Two guys who argue back and forth about technical minutiae that doesn't affect you.

- Your manager who lets two guys argue back and forth about technical minutiae that doesn't affect you.

- Your manager asking if you have any blockers.

- A PM asking you how many points you have left on a ticket.

(The boss battle is just this, but stretched over an entire hour.)

venturecruelty··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
Some of the pro-monopoly takes in this thread are mindblowing. We get precisely what we deserve.
venturecruelty··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
Yeah, sure, every tech company now acts like a craven monopolist hellbent on destroying everything that isn't corporate-driven AI computing, but not this time! This time will be different!
venturecruelty··on The post-GeForce era: What if Nvidia abandons PC gaming?
We'd need our government to actually enforce antitrust laws that have been on the books for about a century. Good luck.
