venture_lol··on Swift architecture at Uber
From an engineering perspective, that sounds uninteresting :)

Terrible networking? how many engineers does it take to implement a few flavors of retries? :)

Uber growth in term of getting drivers, that's what I want to know. It's not just ride subsidies, but the flow of investor honey helps, of course, but they do have some alpha growth managers.

venture_lol··on Swift architecture at Uber
I think you have been to a few rodeos :)

Yeah, when a team goes from 2 to 100, a serious business/engineering manager got to ask a few questions. However, if money honey flow is not a problem, it could be in everyone's interest just to ride along

From a user perspective, you may not have to download a new app.

Different locale, different customs, regulations may dictate entire different screens.

How an "app" is designed and packaged internally to enable the business to respond quickly does not have to impact the use experience. There are plenty of design patterns and engineering experience to draw from. It's a somewhat boring topic.

I find it more interesting to find answers to question such as:

1. A native person in India will be presented with an "Indian" app, satisfying the locale, regulations, laws, culture, etc.

2. A tourist landing in India, well, er, what version should that person use? Laws, regulations still apply (well, Uber may have a different take :) ) but how about the user experience and colloquial details? Would the tourist prefer something from home or something that more accurately, and perhaps more apt for India?

At some point, consider the use of different apps altogether. Perhaps having a front loader to detect which local app should pop up based on information gleaned from the phone and GPS.
venture_lol··on Is Every Speed Limit Too Low?
German autobahn is fine driving. You would just have to make sure your car got that extra kick if you want to go to the left.

Driving in Italy, Rome esp, is fine too. There is a reason the red light is so big and so much larger than the green light though :)

venture_lol··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
Both are perfectly fine, within limits, within laws, and certain moral guidance and generally accepted social principles.

An example:

In American football, it's perfectly fine to take down the other guys hard if you cannot catch up.

That said, rules such as "don't kick other racer's ankles" are generally for the overall good -- we don't want a wild west approach and end up with wounded and hurt players all over the place and hence, the game gets less fun. Notice: there is a balance here between absolute ruthlessness and let's have some rules so we don't all end up with no functioning legs.

However, at the goal line, if touchdown is about to take place, I can guarantee you a player will go for other guy's ankle hard even if it would mean suspension, penalty, etc. Why? Because in that moment, the primary overriding priority is to prevent the touch down. That said, it is possible to cross the line in "kicking the other guy's ankle".

"I've found the guiding star to be "Is this really immoral, or have we just been socialized to believe it's impolite or in bad taste?" One should realize that a lot of this socialization is provided by people who simply don't want you to become a strong competitor, and have indoctrinated this imaginary, soft, cushiony world into everyone's brains so that it's easier for them to come in and take what they want, and their constant empty blathering draws attention away from their dirty deeds. There's no need to allow ourselves to be victimized like that."

Simply brilliant!

So if you forgot to lock your front door, everyone can walk into your house and help themselves to your properties?
venture_lol··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
You can make a good argument that's exactly what Uber did. They tried to obtain field data to make competitive decision.

Market intelligence, market research, competitive analysis, swot, opposition research, take place everyday.

The way they went about it does seem to have put them in hot water. Question is did they cross a line with serious legal and business (as in cost) ramifications?

venture_lol··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
It's a good bet that Lyft lawyers are currently preparing and there are probably top level negotiations ongoing between Lyft and Uber regarding this area.

If there is evidence Uber attempted a bridge too far such as using the fake accounts to divert Lyft drivers or in some way impacted Lyft level of customer service, Uber can all but ask Lyft not to squeeze too hard

venture_lol··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
Nope. I doubt the drivers have a case. I mean, the public can see them, so there is no expectation of privacy whatsoever.

Lyft, itself, on the other hand, has a much better case against Uber

venture_lol··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
Lyft should have a good case. A few years ago, there was case where one company had their employees calling the support line of another company (think it was the cable industry) to tie up support and resources that were meant for real customers.

You missed the follow on statement (quoted below). We would not want 1 or 2 companies to hog the visas, right?

==== Fair distribution. Companies need to get a fair shot to get what they need and no single company ought to be allowed to hog the permits reply

venture_lol··on Leadership and Cultures
There are multiple paths to Rome. Successful leaders be it Satya, Bezoz, or Mush found ways to inspire, motivate, and if necessary impose their views and drives...the very definition of leadership ... Align goals of the masses and bring that joint energy to bear to bring fruitful results

The system needs to address 2 issues:

1. Real advance skilled labor, not menial skills 2. Fair distribution. Companies need to get a fair shot to get what they need and no single company ought to be allowed to hog the permits

venture_lol··on GitLab 9.1 Released with Service Desk, Canary Deployments, and Burndown Charts
Atlassian has the same pricing structure all users have to pay for all installed plugins.

If gitlab could figure out a way to be more granular without customers having to go through hoops of talking to sales team, gitlab would probably benefit greatly by converting more sale opportunities.

I can see many teams, rather than grabbing a hand-full of EE licenses would just stick with CE or maybe even just slap/integrate something on top to get what they want.
