velp··on America’s urban rebirth is missing actual births
So did Portugal [0], except they didn't resort to draconian rule-of-law policies and instead took a more compassionate approach.

And easily remove plastic stuff
velp··on Earbuds are bad for your hearing
Agreed, but for most of the country, $200 is an unbelievable amount of money to spend on earbuds. Even among many of my tech friends, the thought of spending more than $30 on a thing that they will inevitably lose or break is stupid.

And this is coming from a guy with ~$1000 headphone setup at work..

velp··on Benefits of talking to strangers
Exactly my experience. The key is to start the conversation in a way that also allows the other person to exit and save face. If they don't feel trapped it's much lower stakes for everyone involved.

But having so many configs is security in and of itself! /s
velp··on People with Greater Intellectual Humility Have Superior General Knowledge
I think this is an interesting point, but responding to the last part ("...a lot of the people preaching this gospel of "you shouldn't feel bad when you find out you're wrong" are faking it too. But that's okay.")

I think there are different levels of "feeling bad". When I'm wrong about something, it certainly doesn't feel good, and in some cases it really sucks, but I don't then generalize that feeling to represent something intrinsic to myself. I think the crux is separating the bad feeling of the instance from an overall bad feeling. Ie - I got this one wrong, but that doesn't mean I'm stupid.

Correct. In the same way that a coach is not a player
velp··on Unreasonable Effectiveness of SQL
Depending on the version, you might be served by using MIN_BY(x,y) or MAX_BY(x,y). Returns the min(max) value of x for group y.

velp··on Floating Point Visually Explained (2017)
Serious question - why get so bothered by it? If he's old enough to be thinking about floating point numbers, he's definitely heard the word, and it's not especially gratuitous in this instance. Might be a good opportunity to discuss how word choice is dependent on context.
velp··on Goodhart's Law: When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure
Can you explain how the recession was caused by "government's choice of credit worthiness metrics", instead of rollbacks of regulation?
velp··on Why Do We Care So Much About Privacy?
Heard. However, it should be up to the individual to decide how (and if) they want to broadcast their behavior.

To borrow your analogy - even if most people become comfortable with open-door-dumps, why should we force someone who isn't to do it?

velp··on Hunger Is a Gatekeeper of Pain in the Brain
"medical insights".

Japanese and Nazi human experiments were hardly scientific. Torture disguised as science does not produce reliable results.

velp··on The Blindness of Social Wealth
Source connecting the two? I think most here would argue the the decline in magical thinking (at least as it influences policy and society on the whole) is a good thing
velp··on Mode Studio – Python, R and SQL Editor
Somewhat related, but I absolutely love Mode. In a previous role my team used it extensively - by far the easiest tool of its kind I've used. Great support too.

Can't recommend their tutorials enough, to echo another here they really cover everything you need to get started
