velosol··on I Can No Longer Recommend Google Fi
It's because of Google's use of 'From' and 'Sender' headers in gmail. If you setup an SMTP server to send your emails from for your @example.com address then Google won't mess around and the emails appear to actually come from the email address you want out there, not your @gmail.com.

>I'm confident once we have them, it will conveniently become "discovered" that HSV has been quietly responsible for some prolific form of suffering like Alzheimers and/or Parkinsons all this time.

Not sure if you were making reference to a specific belief, but there's already some evidence that HSV1 may be part of the Alzheimer's cause puzzle [1].

velosol··on Companies use smartphone locations to help advertisers and even hedge funds
You can use Automate or other apps to enable/disable Location only when you have a specified app in the foreground. It's a bit clunky because it relies on enabling GPS each time you bring the app up (which also means you get a 'Can Google keep all your location data all the time?' prompt or two). It also relies on Accessibility services which might go away or be more heavily curtailed in the future.
velosol··on Qualcomm wins preliminary China import ruling against some iPhone models
The Economist has a brief piece in its current issue [1] that points at actions like that not being a coincidence but rather part of China's overall push to grow more technology at home.

velosol··on Alex Stamos: Asking tech companies to police hate speech is “a dangerous path”
Of course you can yell fire in a crowded theater. Perhaps you smelled smoke from the popcorn machine (or were having a stroke) and everyone would get up pretty calmly and leave the theater (or tell you to shut up and watch the movie/play). If someone twisted their ankle or even managed to get trampled to death few lawyers would even consider a case against you.

Now, if you had clear intent to cause injury, blocked exits to ensure harm, and started the fire you'd be up on several charges related to fire safety codes & arson laws long before you had a prior restraint on speech claim (i.e. 1st amendment).

The original Supreme Court case (Schenck v. US [1]) from which the rhetorical flourish about fires and theaters came [2] has been pretty much abandoned in favor of later rulings like Brandenburg v. Ohio [3].

velosol··on Coinbase is launching support for the USDC stablecoin
Zelle works quite nicely between (bank) apps and has been as fast as Venmo etc in my experience (in the US). https://www.zellepay.com/

I think the interoperability is nearly solved for the quick transfer world as well. Cross-border is solved through remittance schemes as mentioned up/down thread.

velosol··on I don't trust Signal
I understand you may not have a phone number at all, but Signal doesn't actually require that you have a mobile phone number at all. It can be a landline or VOIP line that can receive a call and you get a voice verification.

Of course many don't want to tie their communications to some other identifier and that's fine but that does mean that Signal isn't for those people.
