vegai··on Google on today’s massive Google+ spam influx: “We ran out of disk space”
Are you joking?
vegai··on Interesting C code
I sometimes wonder if code golfing has the risk that some junior developers might confuse it as good code.
vegai··on End-40-hour-workweek-mainstreet
Most peoples' performance and quality of life lowers greatly when the weekly hours go past 30 and these idiots are talking about going to 50 or 60!
vegai··on Open source needs designers
Counter-example: http://suckless.org
vegai··on Poll: What database does your company use?
"Oracle remains viable, even as others continue to catch up, because Oracle builds on its solid foundation by adding additional capability and features relentlessly. I challenge you to read the new features guide for any new release of Oracle and to remember just the names of 20% of the new features. The Oracle documentation, as of 6 or 8 years ago (10g), was 40,000 pages. No telling what it is now. I can tell you this. If you have something you need to do with databases, Oracle probably figured out how to do it a long time ago."

Are these good things?

We can also reverse this argument: if you're using Oracle, you will never have a use for 99% of its features.

vegai··on Bitcoin trojan caught in the wild
That seems like a highly non-scalable solution.
vegai··on Why Microsoft has made developers horrified about coding for Windows 8
The same idea that made Palm developers jump for joy makes Microsoft developers "horrified"? Yeah, sure.
vegai··on All these Brilliant People at Facebook Make Me Sad
Lawyers, drug dealers, assassins, politicians, bankers, managers, accountants, stock traders, to mention a few: all paid significant amounts but not really that worthy, are they?
vegai··on The Linux desktop experience is killing Linux on the desktop
Hey, it's not all bad! Check out http://www.suckless.org for real Linux desktop innovation
vegai··on Books that influenced Clojure, in no particular order (Rich Hickey)
"Programming Clojure" influenced Clojure? Most impressive.
vegai··on Why your age doesn’t matter
Somehow I have the feeling that in 10 years this guy will be complaining about inexperienced youngsters and how naive he was back then.
vegai··on I moved to Singapore
"You can't possess or view pornography---that's a violation of free speech."

I'm not sure I can digest that outright. Can you elaborate?

vegai··on I moved to Singapore
How is anyone's freedom of speech violated if they're not allowed to litter?
vegai··on What Makes A Great Programmer?
I would like to add something that everyone seems to have forgotten. A great programmer has a significant life outside the field.

Additionally, and I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but the best programmers I know are fluent at least in one musical instrument.

vegai··on House - an operating system written in Haskell
Being both an accurate House (the tv-series) reference and a flippant Haskell reference, it's actually quite brilliant and definitely appropriate.
vegai··on Going Paper-Free for $220
I'm thinking of getting a cheap printer/scanner combo: HP Deskjet 2010 and running the whole process in Linux. Are there any downsides to such a setup when comparing to more featureful scanners such as ScanSnap S1300 or the Doxie?
vegai··on Javascript Bitcoin Miner
Great. So now we will have to start blocking Javascript code from sites we don't trust.
vegai··on The Cult of Done -- are you in it?
That's kind of good, but my procrastination doesn't seem to fall to such a category.

When I procrastinate, I'm not doing anything sensible, which includes trying to apply any anti-procrastination technique.

vegai··on Five Reasons why Google's Linux Chromebook is a Windows killer
Windows died 15 years ago.
vegai··on Sony: The Company That Kicked the Hornet's Nest
"The best way to deal with people modifying your hardware is to embrace it the way Microsoft has"

What do you mean by this?

vegai··on Thrift vs. Protocol Buffers
I like how this thing looks http://msgpack.org/ more than each of the aforementioned. Perhaps I'm missing something, but Thrift and protobufs both seem very lacking in comparison
vegai··on New stable release of Go
The ARM support wasn't working the last time I tried it, unfortunately, but hopefully it'll get there.
vegai··on Apple is not “recording your moves”
F-secure noticed tha the data gets sent out twice a day... Cannot provide the link because I'm on my phone which is not an iPhone...
vegai··on The Non-Libertarian FAQ (aka Why I Hate Your Freedom)
Yeah, I prefer the Spivak pronouns myself.
vegai··on "Trickle" attack on Minecraft servers, or Don't Use Thread-Per-Connection
Except if your language/platform hides the actual thread implementation in an epoll loop.

coughhaskellcough

vegai··on Why are you not using a SSD yet?
Because I'm on a platform that doesn't require massive IO performance on A FREAKING DESKTOP.

How could we implement a tax on horrible programming?

vegai··on MongoDB 1.8 (stable) released
Modded to 0 and never answered. I'll take that as a confirmation.
vegai··on MongoDB 1.8 (stable) released
The clustrix guy criticized mongodb that it locks the whole database quite often. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
vegai··on Fukushima is a triumph for nuke power: Build more reactors now
Then again, I've understood that the worst casualty of Chernobyl was the roughly 200 000 babies who were needlessly aborted because of fears of radiation poisoning.
vegai··on If I haven't succeeded in my mid 20s, could I be successful?
I'm sorry to inform you that you're in the unfortunate 99,99999% of the world's population.
