veeti··on Going Dark, and the era of law enforcement hacking
Security in the game industry is a sick joke. There are dozens of RCE riddled titles sold on Steam at this moment. For example, many past titles on "Call of Duty" series with CVE-2018-20817 [1].

BTW, I highly encourage all EU citizens to prepare Cyber Resilience Act complaints for September 11, 2026 when the law kicks in ;-)

veeti··on The TEMU-Fication of Software, Digital Goods and Services
Temu was hardly the first online store for cheap Chinese goods of varying or dubious quality either. Does anyone remember DealExtreme.com? They were around before Aliexpress.
veeti··on Controversial creators are benefiting from monetization programs run by Meta
The same argument can be made for many Facebook products, such as end to end encryption in WhatsApp. When children's lives are at stake, right?
veeti··on Flutter 3.47
Android used to be its own kingdom separate from rest of Google. And maybe still is.
veeti··on I hate packaging my software for Linux
Linux evangelists on the internet are some of the most unhelpful and useless people you will ever come across. My condolences in advance for every "ackshually you must pray and wait 10 years that some Debian maintainer to pick it up" reply.
veeti··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
The used algorithms were designed by DJB, not US agencies.
veeti··on 99% of My Website Traffic Is Bots
Cloudflare and other WAF blocking is increasingly an issue with RSS feeds, especially if you use a centralized reader.
veeti··on How to Make a Nintendo 64 Game in 2026
Well, are those humans Iranian schoolchildren or Russian troops invading Ukraine? Hard to make a judgment without knowing.
veeti··on Online ad giant Adform was hacked, proving once again why ad blockers are needed
It sounds a little implausible at first, but Adform serves like a billion views on European consumer websites. For example, a state gambling monopoly: https://mstdn.social/@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social/11701780... The attacker only has to get lucky once
veeti··on Cursor removed cost information from the usage page and CSV export
It's Monday morning and you arrive at your comfortable corporate cubicle. You fire up the old Cursor to work on some code and fire off a prompt in "Auto" mode. Without even knowing, the request is routed straight to Cursor Grok 4.5, making you a card carrying member of the nazi party.

It must be tiresome to live life worrying about things like this. Thankfully, the International Criminal Court today does not operate with a terminal case reddit brain.

veeti··on AI in Linux
So, instead of getting upset at the people taking a joyride on the gas guzzling Lamborghini or generating shitty slop memes on TikTok, you're upset the ambulance drivers are racing to help the world out.
veeti··on AI in Linux
Contributors may object to the Hitler AI on their personal ethical grounds, but it's not going to make their buggy and vulnerable code any less so. Because our societies critically depend on projects like Linux, it follows that someone willing to pick up the pieces and do the work will then take their place.
veeti··on Pacing the frontier
Did these guys miss who they elected for president again? No sane person anywhere else in the world is going to go along with said """governance""".
veeti··on Pacing the frontier
No, it just means they want to keep the slice of the pie for themselves while they're at the top.

veeti··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
Yet those same Linux geeks have now decided not to take a "stand" against AI, but rather embrace it. Twenty years ago when the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars raged on, did they oppose working with the military contractors at Red Hat or the NSA? No, they focused on the mission.
veeti··on I regret migrating to Codeberg
When even RMS seems like a more level headed political actor, you know you've gone off the deep end.
veeti··on AI in Linux
> I’m willing to believe that the LLM-powered Sashiko code reviews provide a lot of good insights. However, to address just one externality of this tool, consider that AI companies are driving up the price of consumer hardware. An AI powered code review may improve a patch, but that patch won’t be of much use to the increasingly large cohort of people who are being priced out of the hardware they could run Linux on to enjoy the better patch.

The Linux kernel also owes its users the highest degree of security possible. By proposing a hardline stance against valid security reviews generated by AI, the author is ignoring some other very real, possibly even fatal externalities just for the sake of their political purity.

veeti··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
Do you also see your local library hosting Mein Kampf as statement of support for fascism on part of the librarian?
veeti··on Protecting our FLOSS commons from LLMs
There is no winning with this type of perpetually online activist. It is the moral prerogative of any open source project that wishes to achieve any success in the real world to gatekeep these sort of purity testers out. Thankfully, Mastodon has been invented as a containment zone.
veeti··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
I use Linux every day, where AI coauthored analysis and code has already contributed to harden its security. Like it or not, any project that categorically rejects AI contributions or engages in vague activist type purity spiral testing over "vibe coding" seems like a security liability at best.
veeti··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Unfortunately the truth is far worse, and some of us have to share a union with these fools ;)
veeti··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Yes, when you spend decades arguing "nuclear bad" (or "AI bad"), it turns out you get left in the past as Jurassic Park.
veeti··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
Once you look at how German anti-nuclear lobbying set Europe back decades on its energy independence and made us dependent on authoritarian hellholes of the world, it all makes sense. They just want to do the same with AI.
veeti··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
I spent my first 12 hours glued to Minecraft back when it was a Java applet. Probably wouldn't have bothered to install...
veeti··on A grumpy screed about AI in software engineering
Germany is still there.
veeti··on "Useful" is not sufficient
> Many people use Linux not because it’s the best but for political reasons, for reasons of autonomy or to be part of a community.

The Linux kernel however was not created to serve as a vehicle for your particular strain of politics. In fact, it has been built in large parts by some biggest tech companies on the planet, with politics to the very contrary of yours. It achieved mass market success only through the judicious application of "real politik" and neutrality. Such Godwin's law "you are a LITERAL child laborer and fascist if you use a LLM" tier arguments are unlikely to convince said project to change its ways.

veeti··on Ditching Vagrant: VMs with KVM and Virsh on Debian
I never got into Vagrant but "lima" has worked well for spinning up (temporary) VM's quick: https://lima-vm.io/

There's plenty of images for different distributions, automatic file sharing between host and guest, etc.

veeti··on Since Linux 6.9, LUKS suspend stopped wiping disk-encryption keys from memory
Bitlocker with a password has always felt like a second class citizen to me. You have to dig into a bunch of group policies to use it. Maybe most people don't even realize it exists.
veeti··on Founding a company in Germany: €9600, 152 days and I still can't send an invoice
When I saw "600 comments" I knew this thread would be full of Germans falling over each other, explaining how this is ackshually the God given right system and you are very suspicious for wanting to conduct business or something. Was not disappointed.
