vedranm··on Tilck – A Tiny Linux-Compatible Kernel
Can you provide a source for that? I have found the performance between FreeBSD and Linux to be comparable, even when using Python.
vedranm··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
I self-host e-mail. It's not always easy, but it's doable. It got easier over time with tools like docker-mailserver [1] and Mail-in-a-Box [2].

vedranm··on Hetzner continues its growth in the US with a new location
Hetzner's performance is arguably better (Epyc 2nd gen on Hetzner vs Epyc 1st gen on Scaleway), but their support for IPv6 is certainly much better: Scaleway doesn't offer PTR record and changes the IPv6 assigned to you when they relocate your VPS in the datacenter.
vedranm··on Ask HN: ActivityPub or Mastodon?
How about https://github.com/landrok/activitypub ? It's not two files, but it's PHP at least.
vedranm··on Ask HN: ActivityPub or Mastodon?
If you want a more lightweight server-side software that can access Fediverse, I found two good candidates (I am looking for other suggestions):

- GoToSocial: https://docs.gotosocial.org/

- Pleroma: https://pleroma.social/

vedranm··on Markdown, Asciidoc, or reStructuredText – a tale of docs-as-code
You are welcome. I have no connection to its development aside from some minor translation updates and bug reports, but I can only recommend it.

What I like is how easy it is to host MkDocs on GitHub Pages via built-in support, but you can even make it behave like Jekyll with GitHub Actions. Shameless self-plug of another blog post: https://gaseri.org/en/blog/2022-11-01-publishing-material-fo...

vedranm··on Markdown, Asciidoc, or reStructuredText – a tale of docs-as-code
I work in an academic setting and I can second the sentiment. For a while, we used reStructuredText for writing the teaching materials. Every so often I would have the students that would get inspired to contribute something to the teaching materials, but would subsequently get demotivated by having to learn the rST syntax and tooling.

After a few years, I gave up and switched from rST and Sphinx to Markdown and MkDocs [2]. We addressed the limitations of Markdown with PyMdown Extensions [3]. Still haven't looked back; for our specific use case of writing (computer science) teaching materials, Markdown is a better choice than rST.

FWIW, H2O has offered the same for some time: https://h2o.examp1e.net/configure/mruby_directives.html
vedranm··on Ask HN: What's the best source code you've read?
Opinions differ. I personally like it, but I don't think I would manage do it in a reasonable large codebase. Still, I agree with the points brought up in the Reddit discussion on the topic (https://www.reddit.com/r/laravel/comments/20ovey/just_notice...), in particluar:

I think it's awesome and I'm trying to do this too. It is a great trick that forces you
to re-read your comments and be as clear as you can. Also, you take the time to find
synonyms and look for typos. Overall it's a great way to learn how to be thorough.
vedranm··on Ask HN: What's the best source code you've read?
Since TeX and LLVM were already mentioned, I will casually mention the comments in Laravel's codebase which are all three lines long with each line exactly three characters shorter than the previous line. The art of computer programming at work.

Example (config file, but the entire codebase is like that): https://imgur.com/UnIUZmZ

Are they not sufficient?

vedranm··on PHP 8.2.0 RC1 available for testing
> Having it in the core language, means that more libraries can depend on it, and users are therefore incentives to learn more about it, as they can rely on it sticking around.

Symfony 6.1 and the upcoming Laravel 10 require PHP 8.1+, but I don't see them using fibers yet. We'll have to wait and see.

vedranm··on PHP 8.2.0 RC1 available for testing
Coroutines have been available via many packages for a while; (Open)Swoole and Amp come to mind, but there are probably others. Laravel has supported using (Open)Swoole via Octane for over a year. Why would having coroutines as fibers in the core be a gamechanger?
vedranm··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
I believe that the argument goes that processing e-mail in spam filters can take some time, so they accept it and queue it for analysis.
vedranm··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
Exactly, this is not "randomly losing correspondence". This is simply spam filtering that is done after accepting the e-mail for delivery. Whether that should be an acceptable behavior or not is another discussion.
vedranm··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
> It seems likely that people have lost publications and talks as a result: the emails being rejected and spam-filtered are important emails.

There are likely some silently discarded e-mails as well, but you can't know for sure because they weren't even delivered.

vedranm··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
Are you sure that the infrastructure behind Outlook and Office 365's Outlook is sufficiently different? I was under the impression that it's similar if not the same. Compare Outlook:

  $ dig mx outlook.com
  ;; ANSWER SECTION:
  outlook.com. 300 IN MX 5 outlook-com.olc.protection.outlook.com.
with my university that is a customer of Outlook on Office 365:

  $ dig mx uniri.hr
  ;; ANSWER SECTION:
  uniri.hr. 86251 IN MX 0 uniri-hr.mail.protection.outlook.com.
vedranm··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
Why exactly? Would Microsoft's internal spam filter likely consider that spammers often don't provide that page so you would stand out?
vedranm··on Outlook.com is silently discarding email messages (2015)
> This is fairly normal in today’s world of email providers, and one of the reasons it can be painful to manage your own SMTP server, right?

Yes. Silently discarded e-mail is the worst thing that can happen because you can't detected it as a sender. Your message reaching the spam folder is bad, but not as bad as getting silently discarded.

The best among the bad options is probably getting rejected with the SMTP return code 550 along with instructions how to delist in the return message.

I have had bad experiences in the past, maybe not on the scale of [1], but quite close. The newer drives are better (adjusted for age).

vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
>Are you saying that Bernie endorsing Hillary is proof that there aren't conflicting views within the Democratic party?

It is a proof that that the Democrats knows where their real opponents are, and that is in the Republican party.

>Are you saying that Ron endorsing Trump would've been equal to Bernie supporting Hillary?

Pretty much, yes. Both have a non-mainstream and dedicated following. Both were screwed by their respective parties when they tried to get the nomination.

>Qualifications and platform doesn't factor in?

I'm not sure what do you mean by that, unless you are trying to imply that Ron Paul has a serious ideological foundation deriving from the Mises Institute and based largely on Murray Rothbard's 20th century interpretation of classical liberalism upon which the United States were founded in the 18th century, while Bernie Sanders is pushing USA towards the fate of USSR and other similar implementations of socialist ideas that always end in a disaster.

>Here's an example of GOP acting as a herd and DNC acting on policy:

I knew it's war-related even before I clicked the link. Unfortunately, the same doesn't apply in other areas.

vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
Well, Bernie, the supposed candidate of the people, did endorse her, no? At the same time, Ron Paul refused to endorse Trump.
vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
I haven't seen anyone on the left (in fact, anyone aside from Ron Paul [1]) being critical and calling for the end of Affirmative Action and similar practices, which does not surprise me due to to the "no enemies to the left" formula [2]. I invite you to show me a few examples.

vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
Liberal? Founding Fathers were liberals, I wouldn't call these modern oppression-privilege radicals 'liberals'.

Just to clarify: I do have some respect for some ideas of the class-based left, unlike for the identity-based one. Roughly speaking, I do agree (though for a different reason) with the idea that the intellectual property should not exist.

vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
"Diversity" meaning, of course government-regulated and -enforced <identity criterion of your choice> quotas even in private businesses.
vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
Really? Why is it, then, that the identity politics was dominating the discourse in the USA during the last election, and likely still is? Why do those who question the ethnic discrimination disguised as "Affirmative Action" get slammed by the leftist media, such as Rand Paul by The Guardian (and others) a few years ago?
vedranm··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
That's old leftist position. New left is identity-based, not class-based.
vedranm··on AMD Radeon RX Vega Unveiled
At least on Linux, out of the box support with open source drivers (Linux, DRM, LLVM, Mesa) is a big advantage.
vedranm··on Verisign announces 10% .net price hike on February 1, 2018
This has been happening for a few years now: "Verisign announced an increase in the annual fee for a .net domain name registration from $7.46 to $8.20., per its agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). .Net price is now higher than the .com price that is frozen at $7.85 until at least 2018.

I seems that this increase has become an annual tradition now."
