vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
They have a in-app interactive tutorials which guides each step necessary to get you started which was pretty cool.

We currently use more of compute engine and the documentation for it was really clear for us. https://cloud.google.com/compute/docs/

May be needs more clarification in general I guess

vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
I think Hetzner is more of a hosting provider than a cloud services provider. If you are looking for a single server VPS for hosting then sure Hetzner is great in terms of pricing

Google / AWS cloud is more for running applications at scale and dynamically creating VMs and load balancing across servers with storage, logging, snapshots etc as a service.

vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
Google cloud - I have recently been working on setting up our company's entire infrastructure on google cloud and we were up and running in no time (very happy currently).

- Great pricing

- Great API (command line, REST)

- Nearly perfect documentation

- Awesome support (I had requested to allow more static ip addresses to be reserved and they resolved my ticket in less than 4 hours)

- Very intuitive interface

They give you $300 free credits before setting up billing account for you to try the entire cloud for free. You can play around with google cloud with up to 8 VMs

They also have App engine and Container engine to manage your applications / containers at scale.

Other simple cloud features include - storage buckets, snapshots, VPNs etc.

vayarajesh··on Ask HN: What are the cons of Google Polymer?
It lacks a routing system
vayarajesh··on Ask HN: When you can't fall asleep, what do you do?
I think falling a sleep at will can be done by either getting too tired or too bored. I generally watch / read something really boring (e.g. I cannot stand biology related books or youtube video teaching biology. Sometimes I force my self to watch / read a boring books / videos and in 15min I start yawning and soon sleep.

Another thing I do is I climb stairs to my house (I stay on the 6th floor and have to climb more than 100 steps)

vayarajesh··on What does it take to make Google work at scale?
Great! thanks for the share
vayarajesh··on What does it take to make Google work at scale?
Is it possible to view the video or the presentation given in which the speaker talks more in detail explaining the slideS?
vayarajesh··on Parallels Between Math and Software Engineering
Any more recommendation for books on Math? I am a web developer and I wanted to learn Math from the basics (I only did Math till my 10th Grade)

I have a keen interest in neural networks and it requires good foundation of Math.

vayarajesh··on “Googles 'vertical center div css' for the 100th time. reads for 7 minutes”
A father-daughter moment of a techie :) your daughter see you as a hero when she learns more about vertical center and CSS in general
vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Why do managers tend to make more money than engineers?
It makes sense if a manager is managing a big team of for e.g. 10 engineer and a product. But in a startup environment where there are only few engineers and mostly they are capable of self managing.

However in a startup I think there is lot more work apart from the engineering of the product but not all startups' manager makes more money than the engineer.

May be manager make more money, but the placement security preference would be more for an engineer (i guess)

vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Which book are you reading these days?
I am reading "Autobiography of a Yogi" (after reading the steve jobs book, I got to know about this book. It was the only book in Steve jobs iPad)
vayarajesh··on Slack was hacked
What tangible things were hacked? apart from password was the communication history, files share etc were hacked too? We sometimes share code blocks and zip files etc..
vayarajesh··on Apple CEO Tim Cook to donate his fortune to charity
True donating money is not the most effective way, but it is still better than not doing anything at all. The CEOs of companies like Apple are so busy to build wonderful products that they are forcefully not able to spend that much effort with charities.

If all the CEOs could donate to for example Bill Gates foundation and Bill Gates lead the foundation in deciding where to focus the huge amount money, i think that would go a long way

vayarajesh··on Apple CEO Tim Cook to donate his fortune to charity
Why is it bothering you? You are missing the big picture of my comment. it doesn't matter what way I communicate with # tags or swear words!

You should look past the silly things and understand the message / purpose of the comment

vayarajesh··on Apple CEO Tim Cook to donate his fortune to charity
Yes I have read the whole article.. by the "The world needs more CEOs" I mean is that hundreds is not enough to change the world, There are more then 2 Billion people in the world who are below the poverty line and more and more CEOs like Tim Cook and Bill Gates etc. can contribute much more collectively.
vayarajesh··on Apple CEO Tim Cook to donate his fortune to charity
The world needs more CEOs like him. The CEOs of the largest companies of the world have the power to really change the world by just donating the money.

Not everyone "can" or "afford" to think of rest of the world because they are to0 helpless to give away the money instead of making ends meet.

It is really difficult to fill the shoes of Steve Jobs and get out of the shadow, and not only he has maintained the dignity of what apple is but Tim Cook has certainly made a name for himself and it is very nice to hear that we have such good people in this world.

It makes me fall in love with Apple more. #Respect

vayarajesh··on My first experience at working from home
Wow nice view, do you work with a team or alone?
vayarajesh··on My first experience at working from home
Even though I haven't worked from home for longer than a week, I completely understand what the author means, My first 2 days were ok ok.. but then rest of the day were very bad... you don't realize or feel the break from work and off-work.

When you drive back home you feel the sensation of work is "finished" but at home you are always in the feeling of "work"

vayarajesh··on Any good open-source self-hosted evernote alternatives?
If you have a requirement for self-hosted evernote alternative then I believe either you have very large number of notes and each note exceeds large size or just for plain privacy reasons and your notes are very secretive (because evenote is a simple note taking/syncing app)

You should look into https://owncloud.org/ it is like open source version of dropbox which will sync more than just notes for you across multiple platforms

vayarajesh··on Show HN: Find tech jobs that come with a visa
I was really looking for this specific option "visa". I have applied many companies and unfortunately the process for rejected due to the visa issue.

Nice work!

Do you know if there is such site for other departments like Biotech or Research ?

vayarajesh··on Commits.io – Create a poster from your code
for me it just adds all the code in all the files and displays it in a small font.. something wrong in my repo?
vayarajesh··on Facebook was down
They are saying it was human error by facebook and hence the outage.. but how come other apps like hipchat and tinder were also down? can't be co-incidence.
vayarajesh··on Facebook was down
with malaisian airlines getting hacked its making me think what if the ISIS got it to facebook?
vayarajesh··on Facebook was down
Even instagram seems down
vayarajesh··on Ask HN: My son wants to make side money programming
If he is interested in web development I think Khan Academy is a good place to start (https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computer-programming)

Great teaching lessons and lot of jobs around the world for the web

vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Techniques for surviving a job you loathe?
What I used to do is go to office 2 hours earlier and work on my stuff, anything I liked and develop something. Rest of the day somehow passes with this good inner feeling that I worked on something meaningful that interests me.

Before I used to work on my personal projects after the office hours and I used to not like it sometimes because I am mentally tired due to useless day job. But working on my stuff early first thing in the morning keeps me going

I live in Dubai and there is no ground-breaking work done here - not even close - and I totally rely on HN to learn whatever I can and stay informed at least. Working on open source projects is the only way I see to get connected to the 'real' world of development and startups.

If you are willing to work remotely you should try the below sites - there are some good jobs https://angel.co/jobs

http://remoteworking.co

http://careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs

With regards to balancing everything, I think once you get the job you love everything else falls into right place because majority of your day and week is spent on job which is 8 hours a day and if those 8 hours a day is fruitful the other minor issues don't matter..

vayarajesh··on Ask HN: Socialize to make software
I also have similar situation - I live in Dubai - and don't have many passionate programmers here. After lot of reading and research I have realized that it is very important to work with good programmers like in USA in order to grow and moving physically to Silicon Valley is the best option but if you like your country and have a family to look after you can also try remote jobs.. if you look at remote working with companies in USA it will be almost as beneficial as working as physically present there.

e.g. https://angel.co/jobs http://remoteworking.co http://careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs

You can also try contributing to open source projects on github until you find a way to be around good programmers

vayarajesh··on Software engineers should write
I completely agree with you, writing does help the software engineer think clearly. I recently started writing short poems and it has helped me think better when writing code..

I also believe that the engineers should write code everyday as well.. many of the engineers take at least a day off from the week and it somehow reset's mind a little
