vardump··on Voxel Space (2017)
Was the RAM shortage finally over that year?
vardump··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
Sure (inflation adjusted), but I see no harm if they also provide higher specced SBCs.
vardump··on SimCity 3k in 4k (2025)
Or a demoscener.
vardump··on Converting an Integer to a Decimal String in Under Two Nanoseconds
MMX was what they could do that time without adding a lot of new registers. It still had its uses. 3DNow! made MMX semi decent on AMD CPUs. Of course SSE was superior, but early SIMD was all about compromises.
vardump··on Was my $48K GPU server worth it?
> Gemma 4 31b? Firstly you don't need 64GB for that model.

You don't? It for sure doesn't run on my 32 GB M2 MAX.

vardump··on Everything in C is undefined behavior
Some instructions were very useful and they were simply discovered by programmers who tried out what each instruction did. People did not necessarily have access to documentation those days!

So any instruction or hardware feature would get used, whether it's "officially" documented or not.

vardump··on SpaceX S-1
> I just can't, can't wait until this whole Musk fugazzi finally blows up.

Be careful what you wish for. The collateral damage would be mind boggling.

vardump··on Elon Musk has lost his lawsuit against Sam Altman and OpenAI
> Tesla is falling to pieces now

Did I miss something?

vardump··on WinCE64 – Windows CE 2.11 for N64
WinCE was so weird. Didn't it have pretty insane limits, like maximum 32 processes?
vardump··on Show HN: Find the best local LLM for your hardware, ranked by benchmarks
This AI slop should not be here.
vardump··on Photoshop's challenges with focus, pt. 2
I've been too scared to buy anything from Adobe anyways, because I'm worried I can't get rid of them.
vardump··on Show HN: Explore color palettes inspired by 3000 master painter artworks
Weird how similar many of those are to Commodore 64 palette.
vardump··on Comparing the Z80 and 6502 to Their Relatives
But 6502 has 256 registers! Full ZP of them.
vardump··on Removable batteries in smartphones will be mandatory in the EU starting in 2027
80% after 1000 cycles. I hope that doesn’t mean faking battery health instead.
vardump··on Removable batteries in smartphones will be mandatory in the EU starting in 2027
I like to wash my phones every now and then. Even submerging them in water.
vardump··on 1-Bit Hokusai's "The Great Wave" (2023)
Crispiness has a lot to do with DAC quality. That’s why Matrox display adapters were so popular in the nineties. Crispy, high quality DAC.
vardump··on New 10 GbE USB adapters are cooler, smaller, cheaper
We have switches now, hubs just don't exist anymore. Switches are not affected by some devices having a lower speed.
vardump··on GPT-5.5
I just can't bear to use services from this company after what they did to the global DRAM markets.

I'm not trying to make any kind of moral statement, but the company just feels toxic to me.

vardump··on SpaceX says it has agreement to acquire Cursor for $60B
60B. That's a completely crazy price. Great for Cursor, I guess. If it happens, that is.
vardump··on 80386 Memory Pipeline
Most people called it unreal mode.

vardump··on Michael Rabin has died
Probably meant black HN top bar.
vardump··on We ran Doom on a 40 year old printer controller (Agfa Compugraphic 9000PS) [video]
Also the screen was replaced.
vardump··on The Utopia of the Family Computer
Sigh. That's why I stopped using — (em dash)...
vardump··on German Dog Commands
> German-speaking dog

Impressive!

vardump··on We ran Doom on a 40 year old printer controller (Agfa Compugraphic 9000PS) [video]
Well, it's still a great idea and a cool project.

Whoever owns the rights for Crysis should open source as much as they can.

Just so that Crysis can one day run on a future computationally overpowered smart toaster.

vardump··on We ran Doom on a 40 year old printer controller (Agfa Compugraphic 9000PS) [video]
The pregnancy test had altered innards. So it was fake.
vardump··on Bitcoin miners are losing on every coin produced as difficulty drops
I don't think GPUs are competitive at all. You need specialized mining rigs with bitcoin mining specialized chips.
vardump··on Intel 486 CPU announced April 10, 1989
"Nowadays I can do the same with a free copy of Blender and any reasonably modern integrated GPU in probably under an hour."

Try seconds or at most minutes.

vardump··on EFF is leaving X
I don't use social media at all, unless you count HN as such.

I think the only practical consequence is that EFF loses some fraction of audience.
