valval··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Rich people pay way more taxes than poor people. The top income earners pay for everything in this country and all the other countries.
valval··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Redistributing wealth doesn’t seem like a good or moral solution for anything.
valval··on Trump wins presidency for second time
You have a lot to learn about politics if you think this matters.
valval··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Amazing the cognitive dissonance.

Democrats say that people who oppose their strategies are racist, sexist, xenophobic, dumb, fascist, nazi, you name it.

Republicans say that people who oppose their strategies are racist, sexist, xenophobic, dumb, fascist, and nazi.

He will have fixed things to the point that voting someone else in won’t undo the good?
valval··on Trump wins presidency for second time
What makes you think people haven’t thought about those things the same as you or more, and still disagree?

I think every little life saved is an absolute victory, and many people (as demonstrated) share my sentiment.

valval··on Trump wins presidency for second time
It demonstrated nothing of the sort. The better candidate won and that’s about it. Even in the republican primaries, the best candidate won. What makes you think your opinion is above the system?

They just can’t help themselves!

Since those might also be worn in irony and spite of the other side, I wouldn’t be so sure.
valval··on Netflix Europe offices raided in tax fraud probe
I think it’s very hard to say, and it just gets harder the more I think about it (like many things tend to).

On one hand, if the condemning evidence can’t be provided by someone other than me, should the case be prosecutable?

On the other hand, any sentient human can come up with examples of cases where it might be reasonable to search my belongings for evidence; multiple independent witnesses point to me being guilty of murder and investigations have otherwise stalled. Or anything of the sort.

What if all the independent witnesses are not independent? What if I’m not the guy, but just a lookalike? What if I’m being set up by the authorities?

The easy thing to do here is to say well okay SOMETIMES it’s okay to search one’s belongings but not for like any silly reason or anything like it has to be a real serious one. Then it’s just a matter of where to draw the lines, and who should get to decide.

I like the more absolute stance I made earlier; the government shouldn’t have any business in my personal belongings. Some crimes will go unpunished and that’s a price I’m willing to pay.

valval··on Netflix Europe offices raided in tax fraud probe
I and many others think the government should have 0 business in my filing cabinet. That difference in world view might be what makes this topic more complex than you seem to think.

Who do you think should be renting if not them? Students? Unemployed people?

They’re not morally liable any more than the inventors of Kevlar or thermal imaging or the GPS. All technology that is useful for war will be used for war.

Yes — in a world of sheep, you’re the wolf.

Bringing up one’s family and its best interest might just be people with a family parlance.
valval··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
Their products are amazing and sales keep going up, so I bet they’re doing alright there.
valval··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
It’s not. I think the people in this thread already have their minds made up.

You can’t change the place of the buttons in any of your examples.
valval··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
I can’t think of any Apple software that doesn’t get the job done, isn’t straightforward about its capabilities, and isn’t easy to use. Their whole shtick seems to be just that.

A minority of people will always prefer to use competing products, if for nothing but sentimental reasons. That’s fine, as such market will always exist.

I have one child who is not yet of relevant age.
valval··on ChatGPT Search
I think discussing this topic with too much fervor is a waste of energy. Nutrition science is hard because performing valid studies at large scale is close to impossible, so I’m left performing an argument from nature, being that eating things that were invented decades ago might be worse for us than things we’ve eaten for millions of years.
valval··on Wait Until 8th
Your comment reads a bit silly to me. It’s like your child has control over this situation instead of you, and you’re trying your hardest to negotiate a good position for yourself.

If your child doesn’t use the phone in the way you want them to, you could take the phone away.

valval··on Apex Legends is taking away its support for the Steam Deck and Linux
I played a game called Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory at the pro level (of course making small amounts of money even as a teenager like things were back then).

A lot of the time in the game was spent scrimming on private servers against other teams. Public games were played on the team’s public server, where people of all skill levels would meet. The highest skilled players would always look to be challenged and would switch to the weaker team all the time. Of course on the scoreboard you’d have people who had a K/D of 40/2 and people who were 1/12.

People who weren’t looking to improve and got stomped would of course leave.

After a while of playing on a server you’d know the good players and they’d also self select to form teams with each other and move to private servers.

Yes, people of competitive nature like competing.

I’d be more cynical still and ask, where is correct information found in the first place? Humans of all shape and size have biases. Most research is faulty, fabricated, or not reproducible. Missing information tells a greater story than existing one.

We don’t have a way of finding objective information, why would we be able to train a model to do so?

Is there a system in place for when my identical brother who is leagues better at your game than me hops on my account and proceeds to mop the floor with the competition?
valval··on SimpleQA
I have to be a bit of a buzzkill and say that this is all placebo.

Your prompt might give the model context that gives it better token quality much in the same way that asking “How to swim?” is worse than “I’d like to learn the proper technique for the freestyle swimming stroke, and you’re an expert swimming coach.”

There’s no guarantee your prompt isn’t giving less factual answers to be honest. I wouldn’t go about telling the model that it’s often wrong, as it’s not useful context and might skew results.

It does force me to learn more about computers to bypass it though.
