valianteffort··on SpaceX update regarding Starship FAA flight approval
Flight 1 made a mess of their own launch pad. Why is that the concern of anyone besides SpaceX? They refurbished and reinforced it for flight 2.

valianteffort··on Canada hits China-made electric cars with 100% tariff
Wondering if this was from US pressure because of Chinese EV creeping into the US via USMCA or Canada taking the initiative. Seems odd as they don't have much of a domestic auto industry and I was under the impression they had more favorable arrangements with China than the US.

My best friend, basically my brother of 15+ years is indian. I don't really care that you think I'm racist.

This case in particular was just great because it was some liberal white guy calling me (a minority) racist for pointing out something clear as day. And then he got his karma.

valianteffort··on Startup failures rise 60% as founders face hangover from boom years
I have watched a peer leave his well paying job, TC ~500k, to grind it out for 10 years trying to build a startup on what I knew was a completely stupid idea, in the hopes of getting rich. I watched him work 16 hour days, miss vacations, destroy relationships, pivot and ultimately fail. All because some VC threw him and his idiotic cofounder a bone when money was cheap.

I have to wonder if they ever think about how they'd be sitting on >$10m if they just stayed where they were, kept their equity and enjoyed the stability.

Startups are a young man's game for a reason. When you're young you're usually too stupid to realize what you're giving up, but it doesn't matter because you have all the time in the world to start over. Starting all over in your 40's is just depressing.

Odd I've seen multiple videos where he does code, albeit simple examples but still low level C stuff. His video explaining how the original gameboy graphics work is pretty informative imo. I suppose he could just be parroting stuff he has found online but I wouldn't call him clueless.
valianteffort··on Google and Meta struck secret ads deal to target teenagers
Your body has no mechanism for purging oil residue from your lungs. The frequency at which vape users would be flooding their lungs with those vaporized oils was akin to someone starting out as a pack a day heavy smoker.

Tar as I understand it does break down very slowly over time but many smoke at a greater rate than it can be broken down and smoke itself is a worse irritant than oil vapor.

valianteffort··on TikToker finds clue in Interstellar that changes meaning of whole movie
Fun theory but I don't buy it. Cooper meets people he never met before in his journey. You'd think if it were a trip into the afterlife he'd see his wife, or more people from his past besides Professor Mann.

I would love a browser that lets me disable/enable any browser or JS features a la carte. All fingerprinting for example.
valianteffort··on I'm the hacker that brought down North Korea's Internet for over a week. AMA
No, but I also don't think this moron should have done what he did. Any retaliation now rests solely on his shoulders.
valianteffort··on I'm the hacker that brought down North Korea's Internet for over a week. AMA
If North Korea took down US infrastructure we would consider it an act of war. The dange of exposing your devices to the open internet should be well understood by this so-called "hacker".

For him to unilaterally decide to commit an act of war against a foreign nation means he should also be held accountable for it in international criminal court.

Were this any other two nations you might have a different tone. But these are the facts of the matter. He played with fire and if he winds up dead because of it he only has himself to blame. The only people I am concerned about is anyone else now facing danger because of his idiotic actions.

valianteffort··on I'm the hacker that brought down North Korea's Internet for over a week. AMA
Glad someone is saying this. Some obnoxious moron putting countless lives in danger to virtue signal has gotta be a new low on the internet retard scale.
valianteffort··on First look at the upcoming Starlink Mini
So is this device any less capable bandwidth wise? I noticed a price cut in the current flat dish and was planning to pull the trigger to swap with my home ISP but if this will suffice I'd rather have the portability factor too.
valianteffort··on First look at the upcoming Starlink Mini
I mean Elon has mentioned the laptop sized dish for the past couple years.
valianteffort··on Musk, SpaceX sued by former employees alleging sexual harassment and retaliation
Probably because you have a stick shoved so far up your ass you've got splinters in your mouth.

The type of sterile, emotionless, safe-space you want to work in has probably led to more harm than one that doesn't take itself so seriously. It also yields far less beautiful things.

valianteffort··on DNS traffic can leak outside the VPN tunnel on Android
I built AOSP from source. It's supposed to be devoid of any google specific requirements. I went out of my way to block as many google servers as I could in the hosts file just to ensure it wasn't phoning home.

As far as I can tell the only issue I ran into was that despite being connected to a working wireless access point, the device reported I had no internet. It still worked, but it seems for the purposes of the status bar icon, and whatever other underlying system code, it was using a google server to verify internet was working.

I would just stay far away from android if you value your privacy, and probably tech all together.

valianteffort··on Changes to iOS App Distribution Fees in the EU
Web is a shit platform for most apps. Run code natively and locally unless it's simply not feasible.
valianteffort··on Hijacking Bitcoin: The Hidden History of BTC, by Roger Ver
The ousting of Gavin Andressen signaled the death of the project for me. I divested and stopped caring as it was clear the dev's behind the coup were no longer interested in the original aspirations for the project.
valianteffort··on Ask HN: 4chan Archives Pre-2008?
I suppose you need to be deep in the trenches to find anyone still willing to have discourse there. But as another commenter said, some of the niche boards, like subreddits, maintain some pretty high quality conversation.
valianteffort··on Tesla conducting more layoffs, including entire Supercharger team
I'm sorry but you're bordering on delusional here. The Model Y has been the highest selling car in the world for several months over the last year. The Model 3 and S are also high up there. I will grant you that cybertruck was a colossal waste of time. It's selling but resources would have been better allocated to their low-cost car. Even Elon has admitted the same about CT and Y in hindsight.

But car sales are down across the entire market, this isn't exclusive to Tesla or EV's. Interest rates are just too high for your average consumers and discretionary spending continues to drop. It's myopic to think Tesla are doing something wrong without looking at the state of things.

valianteffort··on ByteDance’s web of apps could get tangled up in TikTok ban
The overwhelming majority of youth use tiktok for their news. That is not the case with the other platforms. Further twitter, reddit, and youtube all censor to a far greater extent than tiktok.

The remarkable thing is how effective bullying is at moderating idiots. Astroturfing state actors aside, the site maintains a high level of on topic civility.

There's something inherently wrong with ordering posts by vote count, both because a confident/deceptive idiot can spread his lies like a virus and because it's too easy to game.
