valgor··on Thomas Bayes and the crisis in science
>It makes Bayesian statistics seem like a matter of letting your expectations influence your results.

The smart approach is to have a set of a prior expectations, run through the data, and see what comes out the other side. Essentially, through a large amount of experimentations, you can narrow down what assumptions were indeed correct.

valgor··on China’s great leap forward in science
Speaking of not understanding words, you just called the Guardian communist...

Please start here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism

valgor··on “Beautiful” in the Constitution of the Chinese Communist Party
> Communism and Democracy are antithetical

Not to derail the train, but it is hard to take anyone serious on the subject of Communism with statements like that. Communism is democracy taken to the extreme with no bosses at work and no classes in society. Historical implements of Communism of course another conversation, but looking at definitions the author is exactly wrong.

valgor··on Andrew Ng is raising a $150M AI Fund
>Ng told me that his personal goal is to help bring about an AI-powered society.

Anyone have links to interviews or information on Ng's vision? I'd love to hear the details.

valgor··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I don't like that I cannot browse projects without signing up. I like looking into things before acquiring more spam mail.
valgor··on NASA's Software Catalog
The site is not loading for me, but last time I looked, their github was better: https://github.com/nasa

Edit: Now that I typed this, the site is loading and it looks like they have added more stuff! Regardless, github link is helpful if you are interested.

valgor··on How to play mathematics
The universe is not mathematics. Mathematics is a game. When we talk about the universe (physics, chemistry, etc.) we use mathematics as a language. The universe is not "doing" mathematics, but when we observe the universe we use mathematics to describe what we are seeing to each other.
