vailripper··on Quit My Job For Consulting: Two Months Later
Do you have a personal 401k setup? I only have a IRA, and the contribution limit kills me. Curious if anyone has setup a 401k for themselves, and the overhead associated.
vailripper··on Balsamiq 2.2 is here
Love the new skin - still has a wireframe feel, but looks much cleaner.
vailripper··on Survata (YC S12) replaces paywalls with "surveywalls"
The article mentions some ways they plan to catch bogus data, but I agree that I'm a bit skeptical they can make it work consistently.
vailripper··on Show HN: A date range picker for Twitter Bootstrap
Nice job, very clean UI.
vailripper··on Custom Sublime Text Build Systems For Popular Tools And Languages
Initially, I used the sublime build system for doing grunt builds as well. However, I've migrated towards using 'grunt watch' instead. Running your build on every file modification is pretty great. Combined with the SublimeLinter package, it's about as painless as I've experienced in web dev.
vailripper··on Trello Android App Available for Download
Ditto here - what could they possible be using that my Droid Incredible can't support...
vailripper··on One of Apple’s Best Ideas Ever — Made Worse
I have one of the new retina MBP's and have had no such issues. In fact I've been a bit surprised at how hard it holds at times.
vailripper··on Craigslist Suing Padmapper
Job listings in select cities cost money, I believe that's their only source of income.
vailripper··on Show HN: Avatars.io - simple API for integrating avatars into your app or site
Agreed. What WOULD be helpful is a service that would look for an avatar on various services, and serve the first one it finds. So if a user doesn't have a gravatar, it looks up their facebook based on their email - and uses that avatar, then twitter, etc.
vailripper··on Louis CK selling tickets to latest tour exclusively on his site
Felix Salmon had a very interesting video on just this subject, and how Broadway has solved this problem with the TKTS booths: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cw-bqtpMZs&feature=playe...
vailripper··on Arbitrage And Equilibrium In The Team Fortress 2 Economy
These posts are fascinating. In college I minor'd in econ, and I always had this feeling that economics grossly simplifies things, so it's fascinating seeing how economic principles play out in a world where there is such control over all the factors.
vailripper··on How not to get acquired
I was in the exact same situation, unfortunately. Had everything built out, with a final nagging notFound error. No response for two weeks, tried twitter, email, phone - nothing. Eventually I learned of their acquisition issues when Sean responded to a post I made here: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4101870. If customer service comes down to responding to angry HN submissions, something is seriously wrong. At the VERY LEAST turn on an auto reply for support requests that explains the situation.

Anyway, best of luck.

vailripper··on Show HN: Redis Dashboard
Interesting, i'll take a look.
vailripper··on Show HN: Redis Dashboard
Unfortunately my free time is a bit swamped with some side projects right now - will definitely get in touch when things die down.
vailripper··on How not to get acquired
I believe it was a partnership between FeeFighters and Arizona Bay (one of their funders)
vailripper··on How not to get acquired
I was in the process of integrating Samurai myself. Luckily, I hadn't yet launched and was able to switch over to Braintree. Thus far I've been really happy with Braintree.

The part that I find really offensive is - they're still taking new account signups, with zero support for those users.

vailripper··on Mandrill - Transactional Email from MailChimp
Looks great. Currently in the process of building a new application using Postmark, will certainly evaluate a switch. The pricing certainly blows Postmark out of the water.
vailripper··on Show HN: Redis Dashboard
This looks awesome. Anyone know of a similar project for MongoDB?
vailripper··on MacBook Pro Retina Display Analysis
Agreed - I'm in the same boat. A 500 dollar premium for a a larger SSD is steep, when I'm not particularly interested in the faster proc. Yes, I could use an external HD, but I really don't like having to carry around more than I absolutely have to.
vailripper··on Has the FeeFighters Samurai gateway been shuttered?
Do you have an ETA on when you will be able to provide support again? It seems a bit crazy to allow new account registrations when you have no ability to actually support those customers, and there is zero mention of the application status anywhere on the site.

It's a shame, because the product seems great and it fits my needs perfectly, but if support isn't there then I have to move on.

vailripper··on Has the FeeFighters Samurai gateway been shuttered?
Yeah - unfortunately my customers will likely have existing merchant accounts setup that they want to use, which Stripe doesn't support.
vailripper··on DrChrono Lets Doctors Accept Payments Via Square, View Real-Time Insurance Info
I just finished building out a 271 interface for medicare and emdeon - the error rate is higher than I'd like, but isn't terrible. Response rates are typically under 20 seconds for us...

For claims, we're using http://x12parser.codeplex.com/. It's still pretty cumbersome, but I think that's more a symptom of the format itself.

vailripper··on Warren Buffett on newspapers [pdf]
The question I have is - with low readership numbers how do you support a news room that can provide in depth local coverage?
vailripper··on Say hello to Octicons
Agreed. I use 16px icons in my projects. Comparing these icons to the Glyphicons I'm using currently, the glyphicons are vastly more clear, especially at the smaller size.
vailripper··on Announcing Better SSL for your Heroku App
Does this support wildcard SSL certs?
vailripper··on "Tap the spacebar with your phone." - Bump unveils new photo uploader
It's also using HTML5 browser location to narrow that tap down to a fairly small area. Pretty neat idea.
vailripper··on Font Awesome, the pictographic font designed for use with Twitter Bootstrap
This looks excellent, nice work.
vailripper··on Show HN: 7courses - The easy to use online recipe manager.
Love the UI. What I would really love though is a site in which I can give a URL to a recipe I like, and it parses everything for me into a common format. Having to manually enter ingredients / directions when much of the time I'd just like to pull the recipe from somewhere else is going to be too much work. Something like that I would pay for, a simple recipe manager, not so much.
