vadym909··on Ask HN: What are the most important problems in your industry?
1. Jobs/Work

2. Most people don't like their jobs but suck it up. The 9-5 grind, climb-ladder, can't switch careers, lack of meaning, social pressure to have job. Getting laid off, searching new job, financial downsides of being unemployed

3. Restructure the job model/market (flexible choices, live comfortably, security)

Its not like the Dalai Lama is promoting an armed revolution or uprising in Tibet. He's a chill dude with a peaceful reasonable message compared to Milo Yiannopoulos.
vadym909··on Beepi Winding Down After Burning Through $150M
Most people understand that like trading in anything used, you get what you bargain for. The quality varies, prices vary and you risk buying crap sometimes. Don't like that? Pay a bit more and buy extended warranty or precertified cars.

To sell your car, there's KBB, carmax, cars.com and any dealer you want to buy a car from.

Beepi was just one of the many options (no hassle no haggle). However, instead of being a marketplace like cars.com, it took ownership of the transaction probably with hopes to take a bigger chunk of the transaction but effectively became a dealer. Car dealer margins are like 2%. At a 5x multiple, it would be worth 10% of Sales.

Try buying an RAM upgraded Lenovo from Amazon. I saw the reviews and didn't believe it because I never had a problem w Lenovo's from Office Depot. Bad idea.

vadym909··on China has wealth of data on what individuals are doing at a micro level
This is sad. I thought I'd be able to see a map showing green as part of the rail line that was complete or percentage complete. It just has some random project names where there's some work going on. I drive to Fresno every other month and cant wait to ride this, but nothing on the route seems to indicate any urgency to complete this project.
vadym909··on China has wealth of data on what individuals are doing at a micro level
are the transactions sold with the personal information? xyz bought these things this month. Seems hard to believe, although I'm sure they may do this after anonymizing the user's personal information.

vadym909··on China Turns to $503B Rail Expansion to Boost Growth
<the Chinese worker makes a deposit in a bank > From what I've heard, banks make loans to friends and politically connected to invest in projects who also siphon a lot of the money away- and when the project fails, the loans are written off. Which is why the public doesn't trust their money with the banks anymore.
vadym909··on Should I turn down a Amazon AWS job offer over this?
This is standard and included in any large company's employment contract. They can't afford not to have it as some sort of fear inducing defense. Accept the offer. Then send a written request to your HR contact for permission to continue working on your current side projects that make money and don't directly compete with Amazon. You will most likely get it. Cross other bridges when you reach them.

Most companies rarely pursue this unless and only do it for very senior folks involved in ground breaking future strategy. As an example, Amazon didn't go after Instacart. Google hasn't gone after their self-driving folks that defected, and I bet they had similar agreements.

vadym909··on A man who put up $1.5M to help 200 Syrian refugees
I was just wondering the other day, why none of the richest people in the world were doing more to help solve or bring some relief to the Syrian crisis/refugees. I guess you need heart not money to be generous!
vadym909··on Apple owes $2M for not giving workers meal breaks
I can't imagine Apple did this deliberately. Most large companies are aware that the PR costs of such mistakes are higher that the costs and would never deliberately try to screw over workers. It was probably an oversight by one/some of its managers or vendors. Spend enough time auditing any Fortune 500 company's worker policies at a plant, warehouse or retail store and I'm sure you'll find similar examples. Like the recent 60minutes covered 'Google driveby lawsuits against stores'.

vadym909··on How did an entire state price itself out for entry-level home buyers?
The problem is when Californians start to move elsewhere, they raise prices in those cities too. e.g. Portland, Bend, Seattle.

vadym909··on Why Are America's Most Innovative Companies Still Stuck in 1950s Suburbia?
I live in the SF peninsula and don't think the traffic is terrible. Mostly 20 min to get anywhere. There are a few places 101, 85 and 280 that are busy during peak times in some directions, but other than that, its pretty similar to most other cities I been.

vadym909··on Freelancers Now Make Up 35% of U.S. Workforce
There's no data on this because no company discloses how many contract workers they use. The DOLabor last studied this in 2005. The best data is from the software companies that manage these programs for Fortune 1000 companies and they say it is 35% -distributed among agency temps, ICs, consulting companies and part time. vadym909··on Replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phone catches fire on Southwest plane
I was on a flight recently and the lady next to me had a large Samsung phone on which she was constantly playing games, etc. and I was very worried.

I was also afraid of questioning if it was a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 because the attendant made an announcement saying people should turn it off and she didn't. Next time I'm not going to be afraid. Can't imagine the consequence if it caught fire at 30,000 feet.

vadym909··on Microsoft disbands the Band: fitness device pulled from stores, no Band 3
Microsoft should just forego consumer apps and devices. Almost all of their late to the market ideas are light weight, copycat, throw money efforts with no originality or differentiation.
