v5v3··on Ask HN: Is Linux for laptop worth the trouble?
You should always have more than one machine (incase one breaks or is lost), so you can have both a Mac and a Linux laptop and switch between them.

I mostly use a Mac, but also use android and Linux devices. It helps me remain vendor neutral as I ensure all applications I use work across all of them.

v5v3··on Why is AI so slow to spread?
Why slow? Because to run a large model it takes many expensive GPUs or API costs.

Therby limiting the amount of people who can experiment with it.

v5v3··on Perfume reviews
I personally try to avoid perfume.

The high end ones are purer in ingredients, but the mainstream are just the cheapest combination of chemicals you are putting on your skin/breathing in.

Most will be aware, but Basenotes is a leading community for this https://basenotes.com/community/
v5v3··on The patterns of elites who conceal their assets offshore
It's why the Panama papers etc was done by a consortium of journalists. Much safer as killing one journalist or two doesn't make any difference to the end publication.

>Sure, they have a passport - or multiple - but they'll emigrate to another country without blinking,

You forgot one variable. Women have a mind of their own.

Switzerland tried to take London's Hedge Fund Industry. The wives and kids hated the lack of things to do compared to London.

Same with Footballers. If a football player or manager signs for a club in a unattractive location, the wives may stay in the previous City.

It's 1m Casualties. Not deaths.

The definition of which is quite wide https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casualty_(person)

>"A casualty, as a term in military usage, is a person in military service, combatant or non-combatant, who becomes unavailable for duty due to any of several circumstances, including death, injury, illness, missing, capture or desertion."

They were never going to achieve a full takeover of Ukraine though. Large mass size and the people wouldn't accept them.
v5v3··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
Russia has a population of 144m.

1m is not a lot

Edit: as per my comment below, casualties are not deaths. It's a wider definition.

Russians and foreigners travelling to Russia regularly blog live.

Everyone there is doing fine.

The world order is changing to a level you won't believe - Russia, Venezuela were reported by WSJ or similar to even be running journalist schools in Africa to break the media control there by western media brands.

Russia and all non-usa allies have been the winner.

China etc have seen the strategies used in sanctions. They know how to limit their impact now.

It's also brought Russia/China/Iran/North Korea and wider Brics together.

It's been a disaster for the west. The measure of success was Russia weakened and ideally Putin weakened or gone. And instead Russia have shrugged off the sanctions, and Putin is much stronger.

And the Russian military has gained real battle tested knowledge.

A disaster for the west, aside from their weapons companies/Ukrainian investments. And any NATO spend increases.

v5v3··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
It's reasonable to read it as implied
v5v3··on Claude for Financial Services
A solid revenue stream will support R&D.
v5v3··on Claude for Financial Services
Hedge funds are often small companies. And will have tech wizz kids aplenty.

The title is 'Financial Services' which is a broader sector.

v5v3··on Claude for Financial Services
More revenue to be made than other industries?

Salaries are higher in Finance than other industries for the same job, as it is well known.

But also, budgets for everything else is also higher.

These companies will sign 3 year deals for support, have you onsite implementing and training + app and API subscriptions.

> I had an accounting professor that used to say the secret was reading (and understanding) the footnotes.

He must have passed this secret knowledge on, as they all say it now...

v5v3··on Ukrainian hackers destroyed the IT infrastructure of Russian drone manufacturer
>Ukrainian cyber activists, in cooperation with military intelligence...

So the foreign intelligence services gave them a button push so it's not a direct cyber war on Russia.

v5v3··on Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 Incident on July 14, 2025
> For many users, not being able to resolve names using the 1.1.1.1 Resolver meant that basically all Internet services were unavailable.

Don't you normally have 2 DnS servers listed on any device. So was the second also down, if not why didn't it go to that.

v5v3··on Where's Firefox going next?
In the old days logging in twice would bother me as is have to type in a password, but now with password manager and fingerprint/face scan it's low effort.

It's very handy for sites where you may have more than account

v5v3··on Where's Firefox going next?
Yes, that's the one I want fixing, and possibly moving from extension to feature.

Why would you create a privacy tool, and then not offer it in private mode. Makes no sense.

(You can setup Firefox so it's permanently in Private Mode and clears history and data on exit - as per Libre comment above -,which is how I have it set)

v5v3··on Where's Firefox going next?
Made a comment, it then asked me to sign up and couldn't be bothered.

The comment was: make the Firefox containers work in private mode.

In Safari private mode. Each tab has no knowledge of another (e.g. log into Gmail and then open a new tab and go to Gmail and you won't be signed in).

Firefox doesn't have this tab level isolation.

Also offer equivalent of safari's lockdown mode. So images and site features capable of loading malware etc are blocked by default.

v5v3··on Meta shareholders look to haul CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg to court
Meta are not involved.

Individuals directors are being sued, not the company

v5v3··on Meta shareholders look to haul CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg to court
Does Meta break a new law every quarter?

This suit is regarding a privacy order they failed to meet and the investors claim this led to the Cambridge Analytics affair. Not a once a quarter repeat event.

v5v3··on Meta shareholders look to haul CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg to court
Have you worked in this area?

I have worked with asset managers, employees come from all around the world and vary in background. Yes there will be a weighting to the more privileged kids but most of the jobs don't make big bonuses. That's just the Sales leads and funds managers.

But it's irrelevant. As the institutional investors who invest are doing so for their underlying investors e.g. Pension Funds.

The people suing, if win, will report higher results and their bonuses will be higher but so will the underlying investors.

v5v3··on Meta shareholders look to haul CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg to court
As per that article, it is said they failed to comply with a law. And complying with laws will be a given in most contracts.

Making money comes after complying with law and rules.

v5v3··on Meta shareholders look to haul CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg to court
Activist investors have always been around.

They only pull their investments if they fail.
