uxp8u61q··on What is the point of a public key fingerprint?
What does this bring to the table over having txt records at e.g., _key.example.com? Why add a bunch of intermediaries?
uxp8u61q··on What is the point of a public key fingerprint?
Ideally, you'd have downloaded the GPG key on first use and check newer updates against that. It's a version of "Trust on First Use". It doesn't protect you against attacks during the initial installation, but it protects you against fake updates.
uxp8u61q··on A Beautiful library of SVG logos
It's a website hosted by Vercel, it's not made by Vercel. As far as I can tell it's just someone's project published without much thought given to legal issues. Try contacting them maybe https://github.com/pheralb/svgl/issues
uxp8u61q··on SSH3: SSHv2 using HTTP/3 and QUIC
The RFCs for SSH2 were all published by IETF, so I would definitely expect IETF to be involved in a project that claims to be "SSH3". If some random person started an OS project and called it "Windows 12", people would rightfully be confused.
uxp8u61q··on SSH3: SSHv2 using HTTP/3 and QUIC
It's just someone's project. As far as I can tell it's unrelated to IETF, if that's what you mean by "official". In any case it's presumptuous for the author to call this "SSH3".
uxp8u61q··on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will enable frame pointers by default
> if Canonical continues down the route of silently nudging users onto snap, I’ll probably switch to Debian.

Serious question: why don't you switch now? I guess I just don't see the point of ubuntu anymore.

uxp8u61q··on First Impressions with Google Gemini
That's not really answering anything.
uxp8u61q··on Google Promises Unlimited Storage; Cancels; Tells Journalist Life's Work Deleted
Storing 250 TB in a public cloud isn't going to be cheap either. Even aws glacier is going to be close to $1k/month for that amount of storage. And god help you if you actually want your files back (around $25k for retrieving the whole thing!).
uxp8u61q··on Google Promises Unlimited Storage; Cancels; Tells Journalist Life's Work Deleted
Maybe I misread but GP seems to be saying the opposite.
uxp8u61q··on Electing the Doge of Venice: analysis of a 13th Century protocol (2007) [pdf]
Try to venture outside the USA, the constitution that your country drafted a few centuries ago isn't considered to be the gold standard of anything related to democracy. And we don't regard your "founding fathers" as messianic creatures, either.
uxp8u61q··on What is a zero refractive index material?
Don't be absurd. I'm a big proponent of GDPR but you seem to be under the impression that it's a magic spell. You seriously believe that, legally, if you post a comment on HN, you're putting an obligation on someone? I have a piece of the moon to sell you, then!
uxp8u61q··on What is a zero refractive index material?
Have you contacted the owners of the website to get your data removed?
uxp8u61q··on Mistral AI Valued at $2B
By that measure I guess Apple is Irish...?!
uxp8u61q··on Mistral AI Valued at $2B
How on Earth would it count as European? It's a completely American company. Founded in the US, by Americans, headquartered in the US, funded by American VCs... I genuinely don't get how you arrived at the idea that it's European.
uxp8u61q··on Linux: Ext4 data corruption in 6.1.64-1
This isn't a sports tournament, nobody is cheering or bashing "teams". If ZFS has bugs and caveats, they should be called out. Same for ext4.
uxp8u61q··on Sony debuts first PS5 controller for disabled gamers
Five years after Xbox.
uxp8u61q··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
No? Where is it held?
uxp8u61q··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
Is capital growth the most important goal we should set for ourselves as a society?
uxp8u61q··on EU strikes deal to regulate ChatGPT, AI tech
You must live in a bubble if you think that EU leaders don't see the invasion of Ukraine as an existential threat... Do you get all your news about what happens in Europe from HN?
uxp8u61q··on JC converts the output of popular command-line tools to JSON
> Windows doesn't have coreutils or nice command line software to do fun or powerful things with.

Sounds like you've never actually used windows for real tech stuff...

uxp8u61q··on JC converts the output of popular command-line tools to JSON
I see a lot of buzzwords and attacks in this comment but nothing actually concrete.
uxp8u61q··on JC converts the output of popular command-line tools to JSON
> "hey, let's extend the functionality of literally every *nix command". Which is hard to achieve.

It's pretty much what powershell did, though.

uxp8u61q··on London trains see power cut as thousands stranded in dark for hours
Do you not understand rhetorical questions? I know what the budget should be compared to.
uxp8u61q··on Spoofing DNS records by abusing DHCP DNS dynamic updates
Are you aware of how letsencrypt operates, for example? With a single spoofed dns record, you can get an https certificate. A whole lot of infrastructure relies on DNS for security.
uxp8u61q··on London trains see power cut as thousands stranded in dark for hours
If the cost for maintaining the infrastructure in 10x that, then it's a shoestring budget. You have to compare the budget to a baseline, you can't just evaluate it as an absolute. Yes, £10B looks like a big number, but what do you compare it to?
uxp8u61q··on JC converts the output of popular command-line tools to JSON
If these "native commands" had a sensible output format, integrating them with powershell would be as simple as putting ConvertFrom-Json or ConvertFrom-Csv in the middle of the pipeline. And let's be real, it's as poorly "integrated" with "native commands" as bash or zsh is poorly integrated with native commands.
uxp8u61q··on For processing strings, streams in C++ can be slow
What's the alternative to string streams for building strings pieces by pieces in C++? Plain old string concatenation? Asking for a friend... I should run benchmarks I guess.
uxp8u61q··on Microsoft Will Eventually Start Charging You for Windows 10 Security Updates
Can you name adware, spyware or dark patterns that are present in win11 that weren't present in win10?
uxp8u61q··on Gemini AI
I don't understand how anyone can see a delayed EU launch as anything other than a red flag. It's basically screaming "we didn't care about privacy and data protection when designing this".
uxp8u61q··on Gemini AI
Let's do a reality check here.

* "Gemini" is an extremely common word.

* The meaning of the dictionary word "Gemini" (a constellation in the zodiac, related to twins) is unrelated to either web protocols or AI.

* The Gemini protocol is new and rather confidential.

Do we agree on that?
