uxp8u61q··on The Art of Electronics (2015)
(2015) I guess. Or maybe (1980)...
uxp8u61q··on Whatever happened to the zero waste movement?
> All materials are inherently biodegradable, whether it takes a few weeks or a million years to break down into organic matter and mineralize.[48] Therefore, products that are classified as “biodegradable” but whose time and environmental constraints are not explicitly stated are misinforming consumers and lack transparency.[44] Normally, credible companies convey the specific biodegradable conditions of their products, highlighting that their products are in fact biodegradable under national or international standards. Additionally, companies that label plastics with oxo-biodegradable additives as entirely biodegradable contribute to misinformation. Similarly, some brands may claim that their plastics are biodegradable when, in fact, they are non-biodegradable bioplastics.

> Biodegradable plastics that have not fully degraded are disposed of in the oceans by waste management facilities with the assumption that the plastics will eventually break down in a short amount of time. However, the ocean is not optimal for biodegradation, as the process favors warm environments with an abundance of microorganisms and oxygen. Remaining microfibers that have not undergone biodegradation can cause harm to marine life.[62]

Will I need to pull up a dictionary in my next comment because you'll still pretend not to understand?

uxp8u61q··on Whatever happened to the zero waste movement?
Plastic waste is a huge, real problem. Biodegradable simply means it breaks down into small pieces that you cannot see anymore. They're still there.
uxp8u61q··on Xmas.c (1988)
It does compile, even with `-std=c17` under GCC. With a few warnings about implicit `int`s, of course. Even `-Wall` only adds a single warning (about !0<t not meaning what you could think it means.)
uxp8u61q··on Whatever happened to the zero waste movement?
Bioplastic is still plastic...
uxp8u61q··on Is Tetr.io Legal?
>You said you cannot make an ethical purchase in a capitalist society. I live in one, so by your rules I can only act unethically.

And where's the error in reasoning, if we exclude your hurt feelings?

>This means effectively, there is no good or bad.

That's a stretch. There is more to life than mercantile consumption.

> This is a popular method of debasing people. Maybe you aren’t aware of that, but the poster you did the dog pile with certainly is.

I don't know what this means.

uxp8u61q··on Is Tetr.io Legal?
Perhaps you should read up on what "legal advice" means. https://www.findlaw.com/hirealawyer/do-you-need-a-lawyer/wha... https://law.stackexchange.com/questions/48016/are-the-abbrev...

> Legal advice requires:

> Education, knowledge, and experience in areas of the law

> The ability and experience to apply that knowledge to specific fact patterns

> An understanding of how the application of the law affects the client's legal rights

> Practical expertise in writing legal documents or other documents to support the client's position

> State or federal licenses that allow legal representation in court

Whether you write "this is not legal advice" or not has absolutely no bearing on whether it actually is legal advice or not. The phrase is used by actual lawyers when they don't want to mislead the general public about thinking that the legal information they provide is legal advice. Non-lawyers use it to feel fancy and sophisticated.

uxp8u61q··on Is Tetr.io Legal?
It's clear from my comment that I think capitalism itself is bad. I never claimed "nothing is bad." Please don't put words in my mouth.

With an app store, you're dependent on the app store still supporting the app. They can withdraw the app from the store whenever they feel like it, and then what?
uxp8u61q··on Is Tetr.io Legal?
That's correct, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
uxp8u61q··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
This lament is about as interesting as complaining about kids not knowing how to use rotary phones.
uxp8u61q··on Uniqlo's Automated Self-Checkout
I'm of average height and the tablet orientation was ok for me last time I bought something at uniqlo. Are you just basing this off of photos?
uxp8u61q··on Uniqlo's Automated Self-Checkout
For people listing other places where Decathlon has this - perhaps France is more relevant since Decathlon is a French company.

> With a PWA the traditional monetization method of selling apps doesn’t work. So, your options will be a subscription or ads.

How so? Offer to install the pwa and unlock functionality only after the user has paid. How is that different from a paid "app"?

uxp8u61q··on A structured note-taking app for personal use
I'm an academic. Any kind of note that I didn't migrate to a durable support from more than a year ago is basically gone.
uxp8u61q··on A structured note-taking app for personal use
My point is that I sincerely doubt that these notes will have any usefulness in 30 years.
uxp8u61q··on A structured note-taking app for personal use
If you expect that your notes will still be valuable in 30 years, then you should probably migrate them to something other than a quick note taking app. If everything I wrote into onenote before eg last year disappeared right now, I wouldn't lose much sleep.
uxp8u61q··on Google OAuth is broken (sort of)
Just try it, google will merrily redirect all emails to a+b@org.com to a@org.com. To answer your questions:

> Where/when/how is the sneed+alias@org.com created?

Where: in gmail's alias list

When: at account creation

How: gmail/gw redirect everything of the form abc+xyz@domain to abc@domain

> How is the user sneed@org.com doing this if they don't have administrative access to organization management?

The user isn't doing anything, it's a "feature" of google mail.

uxp8u61q··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
The claim is "one of the most used CSS frameworks ever", not "a CSS framework that has more downloads on npm than bootstrap."
uxp8u61q··on Catalyst – Tailwind CSS Application UI Kit
> one of the most used CSS frameworks ever

Any evidence for this claim?

uxp8u61q··on Sudo without a setuid binary or SSH over a Unix socket
No, it's a way to start a process that will run as root. The distinction matters.
uxp8u61q··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
Calling adults "toddlers" is condescending, don't pretend you didn't know that.
uxp8u61q··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
> I'll be blunt here. I have very little interest in how the team I'm part of performs in general.

Don't be surprised when others show the same level of empathy towards you, then. It's not about making you feel guilty, it's about making you do you effing job. Unless you're in a very junior position, your job is not to pump out code day in and day out.

uxp8u61q··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
> The entire purpose of starting a company is to get acquired.

I imagine this claim is satire, given how outlandish it is. But if I were to take it at face value for a second... Acquired by whom? Other companies... Who were started to... Get acquired themselves? Where did these other companies get the money to begin with? Etc. This is just a stupendously ridiculous take, I just cannot consider it was made in good faith.

> Of the literally hundreds of companies that YC has invested in, only 5 have gone public.

YC is a droplet in the ocean of the economy. Even if we just look at the US, about five million businesses were started in 2022 alone. https://www.census.gov/econ/bfs/index.html

uxp8u61q··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
> This is nonsense. The French Academy is adding new words to the dictionary every year.

It's not nonsense. They are still working on the same edition, just progressively adding words. There is some debate today, though, because they're mostly working A to Z, so words close to the start of the alphabet have definitions that were written down long ago. The definition for "femme", for example, is controversial. You can read up on this here: https://www.academie-francaise.fr/le-dictionnaire/la-9e-edit...

It's okay not to know something, but maybe inform yourself before calling what other people write "nonsense".

uxp8u61q··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
The (racist) stereotype is that Asians have yellow skin, not Arabs...?!
uxp8u61q··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
What do you mean "who has time"? It doesn't take more time to e.g. say "meuf" than to say "femme".
uxp8u61q··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
It's not a daring conjecture that the slang word for toilet has an etymology related to shit.
uxp8u61q··on A female albatross over 70 years old
Average lifespan is a stupid statistic. If 20% of the albatros die soon after birth because they get eaten by predators or whatever, this skews the average lifespan significantly. It's also why life expectancy statistics from a few centuries ago look insane - people didn't routinely die at age 30, but child mortality was high and skewed the average.
