utkarsh_apoorva··on Are Introverted Founders less likely to launch fast?
Thanks for the kind words. Kitemaker looks great. I love it when I can embed Figma designs into a tracking tool.

I am sure you have checked out Linear.App? - launched today on HN. Their Command+K feature seems good.

utkarsh_apoorva··on Ask HN: Where do you get your privacy policy / terms of service?
Chargify's ToS are open sourced and free for you to use.Take a look: https://www.chargify.com/free-use-terms/
utkarsh_apoorva··on Ask HN: How do you maintain the Knowledge Graph for writing software
Am I right in assuming that topics behave exactly like Tags. I love knowledge management tools. But have never been able to add them to a software development workflow seamlessly - even though the team needs them.
utkarsh_apoorva··on We’ve built a towering pile of shite
Android is at the other, far end of the spectrum.

So much so that we have separate technologies to write in Javascript and then build it for Android (PWAs).

The server-client equivalent would be writing one codebase, in one language and building for browser, and server separately. Despite server-client predating Android by decades, that still does not happen.

It's a bit of a rant - but I hate anything that comes with IDE - I face greater cognitive load in undertsanding the IDE than writing logic.

utkarsh_apoorva··on In Mathematics, It Often Takes a Good Map to Find Answers
> But imagine how poetic it would have been if the technology for constructing such a machine had been available to da Vinci all along.

Very poetic indeed.

Most of entrepreneurship is applying known models to new areas. Intellectually not nearly as stimulating or hard as theoretical math, but the shape and form looks similar - you do not know if a solution exists, you do not know if a problem really exists.

What's funny to me is that, since it's usually applications of engineering, the technology is almost always there. It's a matter of tinkering a collection of things the right way.

I ditched a career in Physics to start a company long back. This post made me think I probably haven't lost much :-)

utkarsh_apoorva··on German city wants to ditch Microsoft for Linux
Ahh... I thought this was the first ever instance.

So Munich goes open source -> Hamburg gets inspired

and BAM - 14 years later it follows suit.

utkarsh_apoorva··on German city wants to ditch Microsoft for Linux
Sweet !

Not just jobs for consultants, this would be a shot in the arm for all opensource tech. Over time, we could have a greater adoption of open source databases, BI tools and whatnot. This could lead more support for open source, more monetisation opportunities.

IMO, this is a great start and if more public institutions were to follow in the same vein, would lead to a virtuous cycle.

utkarsh_apoorva··on Bland God: Notes on Mark Zuckerberg (2018)
I wanted say no, but we did get Trump. So Zuck being President seems like a real possibility.
utkarsh_apoorva··on In Secretly Recorded Phone Calls, Officers Say Innocent People Were Framed
Police brutality videos on twitter have left most of us, even in the developing world, in utter shock.

I am in Bangalore, India

For most of us in developing world, US has been a model state - with problems yes. But a great example nevertheless.

For God's sake, WE were supposed to be a third world country, always looked at with sympathy in popular media (usually grossly incorrect depiction though)

In India, civil unrest is common, and has increased over the past decade. Cops know one thing very very clearly - they are outnumbered. If civilians start to become violent, it will be impossible to control them.

So they stand down.

I have read umpteen number of articles talking about how policing could be improved in the US, from removing powerful weapons to changing the training programs.

I feel that the solution is probably simple - sensitisation to the fact that they are outnumbered. If war mentality is what they get into the field with, better factor everything in.

No army in the world engages with a superior force unprovoked.

People, the citizens, ARE the most superior force - not just morally, but Truly . F*ing . Practically.

utkarsh_apoorva··on Google sued for secretly amassing vast trove of user data
Regulations, a lot of times, tend to have the opposite of the intended effect. In this case, you'd need to define what is meant by "having data".

Is having an email or phone enough to qualify?

Maybe yes.

In that case, think of a rapidly growing startup, which breaches that mark (50% or whatever the law says) - and now has to comply with the law.

But the startup is not capable of compliance, because the law was made for behemoths like google.

This startup will go belly over and die soon.

Google's monopoly saved.

Alternatively, leaving it in the public domain for civil suits to be filed has a tendency of natural selection. If a company is TRULY big enough, and has that kind of data, someone WILL sue.

utkarsh_apoorva··on Show HN: Notepin – Extremely simple blogging platform
this is totally a whole blog I'd be willing to read.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Too Clever by Half
The State still cannot tell the Coyotes from Raccoons. Especially so because neither of them show there form truly until the deed is done. Thus the Coyote population control. The utopia of a Coyote population playing the meta game will indeed happen some day - just that the time isn't right. Yet! So the same Animal Control that goes around looking for masked men with rifles, also chases those who leak the rightful information to the People. The question is not who is right - the question is are the People ready? And what's the ratio of Coyote's to Raccoons. And how exactly do you tell them apart pre-facto.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Show HN: Flubber – another PHP framework
You got a point. However, calling somebody's creation a "piece of crap" is not very forthcoming, specially when you are not even sure about your own point : "It even PROBABLY has SQL..."

You seem to have just created this account to put this unsolicited comment (23 hours ago, really?).

You should stop being so poisonous :-)

utkarsh_apoorva··on The Era of “Proactive” Software
Our belief in Almost-No-Interaction Design is what drives our product development to a great extent. Its a bet we are taking. We welcome your thoughts, criticisms and ideas.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Life Inside an Accelerator
We thought that there could be a good discussion on what are the advantages of being inside a startup accelerator (like http://jfdi.asia) vis-a-vis doing it all on your own. There is very little written by the incubatees themselves, so for entrepreneurs considering the benefits (that goes beyond just mentoring) against giving equity is difficult to judge. Hope this article helps.
utkarsh_apoorva··on My startup failed, and this is what it feels like
Wow. Amazing story. I have heard of 99 dresses a lot - though women's fashion is farthest from my interest area. So you did build quite a brand. I am also pleasantly surprised to see that you probably have set up this blog just to share this article?

I have been an entrepreneur 5 years now, and I can totally relate with the part of showing a positive face when you have none - its an occupational hazard. Good luck for the next set of adventures.

BTW, I am sure the Valley community will be open to welcoming you back. You are an entrepreneur through and through - so if its not the Valley, Bangalore's doors are always open :-). Best of Luck.

Thanks dang. Sorry we have not been very active on posting to HN, just a consumer of information. It seems we got that part of the title wrong.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
Right byoung, the examples do show similar statements. We are fairly good at picking up implied requests right now, but I wouldn't call it brilliant yet. Quickly is still learning :-)

I hope by the time we release, we will be fairly good to cover most of the use cases.

utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
Hey Hellbanner, thats a no-brainer. I was just using Rapportive - sure you have heard of it :-)

PS: I just checked. You have also provided your name. :-)

utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
pretty much :-) However, if u wish to opt out of the service, the data - which can be mapped to the user, will also be deleted. The primary ownership belongs to the users.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
great. Yes, we are trying to connect with designers. Will mail you.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
alphapapa, your points are indeed valid. And your alternative tech suggestions are quite close to what we are doing, while still protecting our code. Just hold on till we divulge more details :-)
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
Thanks wodenokoto, While we cannot share complete details of the technology, we do plan to have a beginner's post on how we have leveraged these technologies.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
Thanks jmathai. We believe that everything that can be delegated to programs, should be.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
Good point. In fact, we are concerned about that quite a bit - so much so that we will soon be releasing details of how reconstructing somebody's email is close to impossible, even by the Quickly team. Basically, we are storing only patterns, not email content directly.
utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]
Thanks, I have read pg's post and quite agree with it. I have tried to keep the voice as clear as possible but the Indian accent just pops up :-)

Your suggestions are really useful. I will try to list out the benefits we have in mind on the website as well as write a post about it.

utkarsh_apoorva··on Quickly – Giving email a mind of its own [video]

Producteev is in the list of 2nd tier right now. Will surely keep it near the top of the list in that tier :-)

Thanks. Public beta is about 1 week away. We are ironing out the edges right now, and trying to add some more useful stuff in addition to what you see in the video.
