utf_8x··on The NoPhone
Chargerless charging :)
utf_8x··on Exodus: Easily migrate your JVM code from Maven to Bazel
Exactly. You could have a million line pom.xml and you'd still most likely just need `mvn clean package` to get a usable JAR. XML is a nasty format but it just works...
utf_8x··on Sublime Text 4
Eww, proprietary software...

/s (but not really)

utf_8x··on Laser Bear Honeycomb lidar
Not to mention:

Waymo: "you can't have a self-driving car without LIDAR, trust us"

Also waymo: "on a different note: we sell LIDAR now, completely unrelated tho"

utf_8x··on Ubiquiti starts serving ads in their management interface
Well now I'm glad I stuck with Mikrotik...
utf_8x··on CourseMaker – Interactive Course Builder for Programming Courses
Are there any similar course builder tools that allow you to "fake" the language? I'd like to make a course for Papyrus[0], the scripting language used for modding Fallout and Elder Scrolls games but there is no runtime for this language outside the game and it wouldn't really make sense running it that way anyway... (So basically just verify the entered code matches some kind of "template" but with tolerance for different new-lines, indentation, variable names, etc.)

utf_8x··on CutiePi – A Raspberry Pi 4 tablet
One thing that really bothers me about this is the micro HDMI connector... It's a notoriously bad and unreliable connector and the board looks like it could've fit a full-sized HDMI.
utf_8x··on Rockstar thanks GTA Online player who fixed load times, official update coming
Not to mention the $10,000 bug bounty...
utf_8x··on I guess I have to watch ads everywhere on my $1,500 LG TV now
Not to mention they will disable the ads for you if you contact their support, for free, no questions asked...
utf_8x··on On the Experience of Being Poor-Ish, for People Who Aren't
My estimate, based on the approximate dimensions of my jeans front pocket and the size and thickness of a $100 bill, would be around 5~8 thousand dollars... Multiple times that if you REALLY stuff it in there...
utf_8x··on Goldman CEO warns remote work is aberration, not new normal
Welp, can't micromanage people working from home...
utf_8x··on Ask HN: Super Fast Text-Only Sites?
Also https://old.reddit.com, much faster than the new version but more desktop-device-friendly than the mobile version.
utf_8x··on Changes to LastPass Free
Even cancelling the free plan completely would still be less insulting than this.
utf_8x··on The Worst Experience I've Had with an Aarch64 MacBook
> The biggest thing that doesn't run properly on here is Emacs.

Time to switch to a real text editor such as Vim then :)

utf_8x··on Ask HN: How common is not having root access on your computer?
This was a strange one: when I worked for a FinTech company that shall remain nameless, I had a work laptop but I had to RDP to a remote machine. I had full Admin access to the remote work machine (that had access to everything, even being in the same datacenter and subnet as the production servers), meanwhile, for "security reasons", I couldn't even change the wallpaper on the laptop.
utf_8x··on Ask HN: Why aren't you coding?
Simple, it's Friday :)
utf_8x··on Intel mocks Apple in new campaign highlighting things users can’t do on a M1 Mac
If you can go all day on a single charge you're not on an Intel laptop. Go Mac. :)
utf_8x··on A gorilla who was brought up as a boy in an English village
It's not just that. They won't let me read it without an account. I don't want a medium account. The only workaround is to clear cookies or open it in a private window and I don't care enough to bother doing either of those things.

I really don't understand why people use a mediocre blogging platform that seems to be dedicated to inconveniencing their users as much as humanly possible.

utf_8x··on AWS Crypto Token
Calling it AWS is a horrible idea...
utf_8x··on A gorilla who was brought up as a boy in an English village
Is it just me or does Medium actively not want me to read the article?
utf_8x··on The first investment app that will make you cry right after the installation
Funny. Shame it's just an Ad for yet another shady trading app...
utf_8x··on Ask HN: Marketwatch Site Down for Anyone? [the stock prices bit]
Yep, seems down... Not surprised tho, downdetector's top sites today are Robinhood, Ameritrade, E-Trade, Charles Schwab, Fidelity, Webull and other market and investment related websites
utf_8x··on WhatsApp loses millions of users after terms update

utf_8x··on Why Jabber reigns across the Russian cybercrime underground
Ah, haven't noticed that... In that case the HipChat bit makes more sense although I still wouldn't call it popular...

WhatsApp switched to Signal Protocol in 2016 however so that point still stands.

utf_8x··on Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny detained as he returns to Moscow
I'm a bit out of the loop... Anyone got a TL;DR for why he decided to come back to Russia knowing full well he will be arrested?
utf_8x··on Why Jabber reigns across the Russian cybercrime underground
Did the author of the article bother to do any research at all?

The "popular" messaging service HipChat has been dead since 2018 when Slack acquired it's codebase and moved it's users to Slack.

WhatsApp no longer runs on Jabber/XMPP. They used to run on modified eJabberd a long time ago but these days they use a combination of Signal and something custom...
