usui··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
You want them to pay a multi-trillion dollar clean-up and cancer fund for car-sized multi-year-service-life satellites burning up in the atmosphere? How much do you want incumbent multi-decade culprits to pay?

EDT: I should have clarified I'm not only talking about incumbent satellite companies because people are replying about the launch volume. Think about pollution from oil companies and coal plants and consider how that compares to an aerospace company. How much have polluting companies been fined relative to multiple trillions of dollars?

usui··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Why are car companies other than Tesla and BYD so dumb with their EV naming strategy, but perfectly fine at naming gasoline cars? Really curious because it seems like you have to put in effort to be this silly at naming. Reminds me of how Microsoft names anything.

usui··on Failing grades soar with AI usage, dwindling math skills in Berkeley CS classes
America's vapid fixation with race is ridiculous especially since it uses race as a proxy for social stratum when it could just be addressing class issues directly instead. If only there were some history of forms that parents fill out every year showing their income to the government that is more-or-less vetted to some degree—too bad we don't have such a thing that students could use to prove social stratum! Plus, what the hell is race anyway? An unethical tip one could give to university applicants would be to claim membership to the most beneficial group because it's not like university admissions has any way of proving your "race". Construct any fabricated story that'll get the most approval and maximize your chances of getting into a top university.

I looked at my eBay receipt from 2023 and I paid $84.98 for a "Kingston FURY Beast 64GB (2x32GB) 3200MHz DDR4" listing and now the equivalent on eBay "Buy It Now" is $374.99 for "Kingston FURY Renegade 64GB (2x32GB) DDR4 RAM 3200MHz (KF432C16RBK2/64)". What a timeline it has become for consumer computing three years later!

usui··on The US is winning the AI race where it matters most: commercialization
> where it matters most: commercialization.

It begs the question because both its premise and assertion are already wrong. Has AI improved the industrial capacity of the US in order to improve the lives of its citizens? No it hasn't. Has AI increased the wealth of its citizens by being able to do laundry or any household task in a generalized way? No it hasn't. The only thing it's really done is make very narrow slices of white-collar work more fungible. In what way has AI been able to address existing shortcomings of the US?

Interesting, I did not know this, but a little bit doubtful. Wouldn't it be the other way around? Explicit spoken language coming from being written that way.
usui··on SecurityBaseline.eu
I skimmed https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_separator but still don't understand. Why does this difference exist? Also, why did the conflict eventually settle into something between full stops and commas? What stopped other symbols from continued usage like bars or underscores?

It seems weird that a system would eventually settle on just full stops and commas, yet not settle on where to put them. If your system is going to converge strongly on two symbols, finish the job!

This is so unbelievably naive, I'm flabbergasted. Well, great lesson for OP: Never burn anything that could help you, and if instructed to do so, make backups or lie that you did so.

usui··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
Can you share details on how one trivially connects via IPv6 only? I see no option in iOS Wi-Fi settings to do this, and I think it's reasonable to expect not to have to turn off IPv4 on my access point to test IPv6-only networking.
usui··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
Which provider are you using? I'm curious about this since there are not many OpenWrt guides for getting connected in Japan. Is your config similar to this write-up? https://github.com/fakemanhk/openwrt-jp-ipoe

I didn't need to do any configuration for DS-Lite or MAP-E, as DHCPv6 with a configured prefix got IPv6 working, although DNS is still broken when turning off IPv4 entirely.

usui··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
Yeah and this distinction explains the fact that because China's Great Firewall blocks Google, this website shows 4.66% adoption as a reflection of that. I think China's IPv6 support rate is actually much higher than that, maybe a little over 50% because of its central initiative to increase IPv6 adoption?

EDIT: Apparently it's 77% https://pulse.internetsociety.org/en/news/2026/01/china-hits...

usui··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
This seems like wishful thinking. Python3 vs. Python2 seems different than IPv6 vs. IPv4.
usui··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
Outside of hobbyist niche uses, sites won't start being hosted IPv6-only. The financialization of IPv4 addresses will simply get worse and be even more pay-to-play than it is now. Amazon raises the price of IPv4 and everyone goes along as a cost of doing business.
usui··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
It has barely hit 50% and it's already plateauing. This adoption rate is ridiculous despite basically all network interfaces supporting it. I thought I would see IPv6 take over in my lifetime as the default for platforms to build on but I can see I was wrong. Enterprise and commercial companies are literally going to hold back internet progress around 60 to 75 years because it's in their best interest to ensure users can't host services without them. Maybe even 75 years might be too optimistic? They are literally going to do everything in their power to avoid the transition, either being dragged out kicking and screaming or throwing their hands up and saying they can't support IPv6 because it costs too much.

Try going IPv6-only by disabling IPv4 on your computer as a test and notice that almost nothing works except Google. End users shouldn't need to set up NAT64/6to4 tunneling. It should be ISPs doing that to prepare for the transition.

Also, notice how Android and iOS don't support turning off IPv4.

usui··on How a dancer with ALS used brainwaves to perform live
The featured video does not explain how it uses signals to produce which outcomes and they basically just say "we use machine learning while outputting a dance". At 07:10 it looks like the person chooses between two binary options of "sad" and "relieved". Unfortunately I doubt the person has anywhere near the real-time input to the performance as much as it is implied. Dentsu is also an advertisng agency in Japan, so it seems like this is more marketing than it is technical.

Dances by physical humans are always choreographed beforehand but live performances always show physical motion that can interrupt or change to unchoreographed movement at any time. I have a hard time believing that this person's brainwaves are mapping and producing the hologram in a specific 3D space, other than instructing it which mood preset to use at a given time.

Excluding the marketing of the ALS story, I guess I'm wondering how it's different from a Michael Jackson hologram performance where someone could adjust the sliders for mathematical functions live?

usui··on Japan to require language proficiency proof for engineer, specialist visa
Well, I mean Japan has almost half the GDP per capita than Germany and the mentioned fee is the minimum in a rural area (a place where driving becomes essential), not Tokyo where it's considered the ultimate privilege bestowed upon from the heavens and costs more.
usui··on Japan to require language proficiency proof for engineer, specialist visa
Japan is a bureacracy-driven credentialist Confucian scholar-boner societal nightmare, so pushes for more credentialism are never a surprise. Recently this month laws and fines for bicyclists have gotten stricter. Yes, a human-powered vehicle that almost anyone can ride without a license is deemed necessary to enforce. This is what the government thinks is worthy of its time, and it thinks making immigration harder to do with more bureaucratic entry barriers is necessary when the foreigner population is barely 3%. The process to getting a driver's license is insane. If you want to avoid the Kafkaesque procedures at the license center, you have to go to a school that costs around $2000 and takes several weeks so you can have forced participation in the bureacracy. The United States fails to prioritize anything whereas Japan prioritizes all the wrong places and thinks such misprioritization is good because it considers any centralized action at all to be inherently good. Wheels spinning in place.
usui··on Zero Days: Electric Motorcycles Are a Security Nightmare
A direct email from Zero Motorcycles to owners probably as a result of this blog post:

SUBJECT: Firmware Release & Ongoing Security Measures

Dear Zero Owners,

March 25th Firmware Update (BMU V20)

On the morning of March 25th, as part of our ongoing improvements, we released a firmware update for select 2022+ Zero models that improves the accuracy of the battery state-of-charge and range display. This update addresses a condition where, over time, the system could overestimate available charge, which in rare cases could lead to the motorcycle shutting down before the display reaches 0%. Following installation, some riders may notice a lower battery percentage or reduced range estimate. This is expected and reflects corrected, more accurate readings — actual riding range is not affected.

See details at zeromotorcycles.com/firmware.

Ongoing Security Enhancements

Separately, we recently became aware of potential issues in our motorcycles’ firmware and are taking steps to address them with your safety and security in mind. This work is ongoing, and we remain committed to strengthening system protections across our platform.

We understand how important trust and dependability are when you ride. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

The Zero Motorcycles Team
