usrnm··on EU chief opens door for Canada to become 'associate member'
Another 40% is in Russia, good luck with that
usrnm··on The biggest dinosaurs couldn't sit on their eggs
Afaik, the modern view on birds is not that they came from dinosaurs, but they are dinosaurs, the only kind that survived.
usrnm··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
> The latest cuts come after Oracle's workforce fell by roughly 21,000 employees, or 13%, during fiscal 2026

13% doesn't seem too different from other tech companies

usrnm··on How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy
I guess, you don't use AI for work? Otherwise, why should you be paid for it? Should you only be paid for the code you actually wrote yourself?
usrnm··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
Do you have a real argument to make rather than just appealing to authority?
usrnm··on Corporate America is getting hooked on open-source AI
Open weights != self hosted
usrnm··on Intrusive linked lists (2019)
"Intrusive" may be a C++ speak, but I wouldn't say that one or the other type of lists is necessarily much older or more "normal". After all, a cons cell embeds data and not the other way around and lisp is one of the oldest programming languages in existence
usrnm··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
When going at a high speed, breaking hard with the front wheel alone can force the bike to rotate around it and the rider might enjoy a very short but very thrilling flight. Which I learned the hard way many years ago
usrnm··on How bicycle coaster brakes work (2018)
Breaking with just the front wheel break is a very bad idea, so you always need the rear wheel hand to break
usrnm··on My local model setup on an M4 Pro Mac Mini
> It's free

It isn't, the cost is included in your electricity bill, not even talking about the cost of your time to set it up. It's very possible that it costs you more than a cloud mode would, you just don't want to calculate it properly.

usrnm··on Urban Congestion Pricing and the Response Times of Emergency Medical Services
> can't physically or geographically support subways or light rail

Why? Genuinely curious, I don't know much about US geography

usrnm··on Urban Congestion Pricing and the Response Times of Emergency Medical Services
Let me introduce you to this very new invention called public transport

Just use the beak?
usrnm··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
What happened to buying a single ticket at the station, when you need one? That's what I did when I was in Tokyo, but it was a long time ago
usrnm··on US removes Syria from terrorism sponsor list, lifting major investment obstacle
Sounds like a perfect opportunity for alternatives (like Chinese models) to move in
usrnm··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
So, rich enthusiasts it is, then
usrnm··on The treasury bond mess: is this the demise of the US as a safe haven?
How much of it is "the current administration" and how much is simply the continuation of a much longer trend? The US has been at war with this or that country in the Middle East for as long as I'm alive and I'm almost 40. Same with tax cuts, high spending and so on. It's easy to blame everything on Trump (or Reagan), but it seems to be a much broader issue with the whole system
usrnm··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
> Or the oft-accused-of-genocide Israel

The only reason Israel can conduct an open genocide without any consequences is because it has full support of the US

usrnm··on The Two Factions of C++ (2024)
Smart pointers existed long before C++11. std::auto_ptr was a mistake, but it wasn't the only option
usrnm··on The Two Factions of C++ (2024)
> it was also a mess of intricate object ownership

Not much has changed, though, it still is. Just with a lot more bells and whistles around it

usrnm··on 2,500-year-old sculpture discovered at UNESCO site in Turkey
There are very few places on Earth that developed writing completely independently, without any external influence. Far fewer than "civilizations"
usrnm··on A spectre is haunting Unicode
Most kanji are a combination of several smaller parts called "radicals" in English. If you look at these two kanji through this lens, you will see that it's actually a very simple mistake, one existing radical is replaced by another existing radical. It is very easy to imagine software that was working exactly like that: interpreting kanji as a combination of radicals rather than individual unrelated symbols
usrnm··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
> indefinitely

Which, in practical terms, means "while I or my investors have money". These guys have 70 years worth of data, can you guarantee to keep it for another 70? The real answer to these kinds of problems is managing the data yourself

usrnm··on Deutsche Bank becomes first foreign yuan clearing bank in Europe
There is a different between a conflict and a war. Humans are uniquely violent and cruel to each other, there is nothing even close in the animal world
usrnm··on To save C, we must save ABI (2022)
The famous C dilemma: we want to be as close to the machine as possible, but don't want to change anything when the machine changes
usrnm··on Open-source interactive map for the Aug 12 total solar eclipse
"Saragossa" is an old and well-established spelling of that city's name in English and this is an English-speaking forum

Can we please stop with this nonsense? No matter where you live and which language you speak you never call the majority of places on Earth right. Can we just accept it and move on?
