user6723··on YouTube will stop removing false presidential election fraud claims
It was fortified. For Kamala who everyone likes so much.
user6723··on The NixOS Foundation’s Call to Action: S3 Costs Require Community Support
One of my colocated servers has 60TB of space to spare and has a 10gbe unmetered uplink on the provider's IP-transit blend.

It is easy to configure traffic shaping on the box so that any unused upload bandwidth can be used without any impact to existing applications.

I would be happy to seed NixOS torrents. There is an extension to torrents where files can be added to a torrent after a torrent is released that might make sense to look at.

user6723··on Witch – macOS window switcher replacement
After https://SwayWM.org I have told prospective employers that I'm gonna have to use a Linux system when working there and if not it's okay I can work somewhere else.

"But our security team can only support Mac and Windows" is a sad joke I hear too often.

A couple years ago I turned down an employment package offer that was too good to turn down and said I could be available as a contractor. A big part was I didn't wanna be forced to use a f**ing Mac. Taxes made more sense too so yeah.

user6723··on System76's coreboot open firmware manages to disable Intel ME for Raptor Lake
The purpose of Intel ME is to give foreign intelligence agencies wireless access to America's senators, executive teams, and critical infrastructure.

Occasionally the open source security industry uncovers yet another 0day in the endless stream of zero days then Intel and all the OEMs release a patch to fix the bug and add three more 0days to Intel ME.

Very very few IT teams want AMT. It is a total scam. If we had a functioning government, Intel ME in its current from would never be allowed to be sold in USA.

user6723··on Gigabyte Rolls Out Firmware Update to Mend Firmware Backdoor
At the consulting firm I'm a subcontractor for two of the IaaS providers they support have Gigabyte on what is essentially a black list. These guys buy sometimes hundreds of servers in a single quarter.

Gigabyte needs to release the firmware source code, it's the only way customers will ever trust Gigabyte again.

user6723··on Why is Kubernetes adoption so hard?
This is a pure marketing high bullshit article. This is akin to spam.
user6723··on Some models of Gigabyte motherboards download firmware updates insecurely
Indeed they would be well to but they won't be considering shit beyond a room temp IQ they just wanna play their gaymz
user6723··on Some models of Gigabyte motherboards download firmware updates insecurely
There should be laws in place prohibiting closed source code from being distributed with silicon.

inb4 intellectual property, UEFI software aren't special, they are trash

user6723··on Climate change could trigger gigantic deadly tsunamis from Antarctica
Still waiting for the sea level rise As Gore promised us to ruin Obama's beachfront home. I won't hold my breath.
user6723··on ARM’s Cortex A53: Tiny but Important
ARM Cortex A53 is one of the few (or only?) modern CPUs without spectre problems. Other CPUs do have mitigations but they only lessen the problem.
user6723··on Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
They should remember to get their booster shot.
user6723··on Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
When I tell someone to use Signal app and they say "I'm not that important" all I can do is smile and nod: "no.. you are not that important".
user6723··on Jails on FreeBSD
Underrated post.
user6723··on Mastering Monero: The future of private transactions [pdf] (2019)
I bought a car that was listed on Craigslist with XMR.
user6723··on Minix development has been abandoned?
Intel is keeping MINIX alive. If you have an Intel chip there is a remote access to your disk even when the machine is "off'. Foreign governments leverage this to spy on USA, all vulnerabilities in the Intel ME are totally accidents and not intentional.
user6723··on The Problem with Consensus (2015)
Knowledge of Birkeland currents kinda upends a good chunk of some of the narratives about atmosphere.
user6723··on Can Psychedelics Cure Depression?
The user has to sincerely want to figure their shit out.
user6723··on Nuclear: Not a Faustian bargain, a near-perfect providential gift (2008) [pdf]
They cost less than $30-million to build.
user6723··on Nuclear: Not a Faustian bargain, a near-perfect providential gift (2008) [pdf]
The source linked above is what is called a primary source (as taught in grade school).

The video is raw video footage, not CGI.

user6723··on [dead]
Raw video footage shown.
user6723··on Nuclear: Not a Faustian bargain, a near-perfect providential gift (2008) [pdf]
Modern nuclear technologies are actually very safe.

Leveraging an alternative model about eight years ago, this plasma generates its own magnetic fields, avoiding the multi-billion magnet infrastructure required by Tokomak. This plasma stays "lit" almost indefinitely with less than 280 watts of power input.

user6723··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
Better to have a new world order than going to someone's building to use the internet. We have the internet now so yeah. Doing a team meet up every quarter is great. Don't need to do it like every Mon-Fri tho that's just not productive.
user6723··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
Hey mcny look up Intel ME/AMT, we probably agree there too.
user6723··on Successful Lisp: How to Understand and Use Common Lisp (1999)
Statically typed Lisp for the win https://carp-lang.github.io/carp-docs/core/Pointer.html
user6723··on Brian Chesky: Ability to hire from anywhere is more valuable than in-office work
You don't need to go to the building to use their internet to code stuff for machines that are on the internet or behind a VPN or ZeroTrust gateway that is also on the internet, if you have internet.

I worked at an internet-native company a bit over a decade ago, they got more done in two sprints than the "enterprise" places would get done in 3-6 months.

user6723··on FreeBSD 13.2 on ThinkPad T14 (GEN1)
I like the chassis and keyboard of the ThinkPad T14 a lot.

I would gladly pay the OEM $4,000 for the same product if firmware chips were detachable, there were no binary blobs, and firmware couldn't interfere with the OS like Intel ME does. The AMD flavor of ThinkPad T14 is great it's a shame that it has PSP (AMD equivalent to ME).

user6723··on Saturn's rings are far younger than once thought
The ancient cultures an every habitual continent astronomically identified their "gods" as Mars, Venus, and Saturn. Why did they do that?
user6723··on Saturn's rings are far younger than once thought
Funny how the old Hebrew word for sun is Shemesh, and the Sumerians astronomically identified Shemesh as shown on the tablets of Shemesh as the planet Saturn. Huh. Weird. Wonder why they would do that.
user6723··on TypeScript is 'not worth it' Svelte switches to JavaScript and JSDoc
Some of us who were working on lots of Node/Deno projects had already moved on to ReScript, and I would be touting what a great step forward ReScript is away from TS and JS, but a team I am on agreed to attempt fullstack dev with Rust and htmx with very light use of ReScript for the frontend. Since then this has been our stack and one I go to for personal projects. One of our team members is looking to replace the remaining browser-side ReScript portion with Rust (WASM), so we will be pure Rust until we are ready to switch to Austral.

user6723··on How fast can European steelmakers decarbonise?
Safire plasma, which forms self-containing magnetic fields and is a fusion reaction that can stay lit pretty much indefinitely with no artificial magnet infrastructure (like the crappy Tokomak) renders the CO2 narrative moot.
