user070223··on NetGuard – rootless Android outbound per-app OSS firewall, like LittleSnitch
Don't forget to periodicly update the hosts file: Settings -> Backup -> Download hosts file.

The creator also made XPrivacyLua (hooks Android API system calls to block premissions)

user070223··on Ask HN: Tips for Hacking a TV?
Perhaps Google TV(there is both an OS and a service by that name, the OS was once called Android TV)?

If you're talking about kdrag0n's work he had it in his pateron and I think Mishaal Rahman had tried it. Hopefuly he'll pop up in this thread and clarify what happened to it
user070223··on Google is preparing to let you run Linux apps on Android, just like Chrome OS

Old comment of mine in another thread: Our phones might be our next Desktops/Laptops/main personal computing device: 1. local first (you do go to the bathroom/gas station with your phone) 2. portable 3. reduce ewaste, money spent

The lack of convenience in the form of larger screen might be mitigated using smart glasses, projector(unihertz tank 3 has built in), or just connect to an external monitor

Snapdragon 8 gen 3 performs like cpu from 2020 and midtier gpu from 2016 AVF might ship with android 15 as Mainline module (One need kernel 5.10+)

Windows on arm is progressing (qcom snapdragon elite chipset on microsoft surface devices), qcom gunyah hypervisor, MediaTek's GenieZone hypervisor, winlator etc..

user070223··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
Althea Networks provide openwrt firmware which allows to buy/sell data by usage(micro transaction) on the fly, some cryptocurrency is/was involved which make some sense if you think about it(This and Filecoin might be the only projects which it makes sense IMHO). Wider adoption could incentivize the pricing to be as close to commodity.

user070223··on The fight to save Chile's white strawberry
Probably because strawberries are not grown from seeds (The visible seeds, is actually, "botanicly", the fruit; the strawberry is the Accessory fruit)

Never knew the strawberry was also part of the colombian exchange, I find it funny that the modified strawberry found it way back to chile, which remind me of the legend about the Calafate, another chilean berry, "whom who eats the calafate always comes back".

user070223··on Geothermal Energy Could Outperform Nuclear Power
I've read here(HN) in the past that fracking hotspots caused "earthquakes" somewhere in europe, is it debunked or non issue?

In addition I've read/heard that Ormat which manages/builds many such small plants that they pump a different fluid(not water) in the pipe to extract the heat to create power [as opposed to what is stated in the article and in comments here] https://patents.google.com/patent/CN101142377B/en

user070223··on Scaling up linear programming with PDLP
Maybe ask your customer how much does it worth to them? You don't have to reveal the secret sauce, provide an API to your server to keep the algorithm IP. Of course there might be race to the bottom eventually like any busniess with zero marginal cost

user070223··on Poor Foundations in Geometric Algebra
Note don't to be confused with Algebraic Geometry they are different;

When I first came across this topic it was eye opening, especially the fact that you could squeeze Maxwell's equations into one and the fact that pseudovector create by cross product from physics is just a bivector which in 3d could be represented like a vector orthogonal to the plane created by the two vectors in the product

Primer on the topic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60z_hpEAtD8 (And other videos on his channel) Another greate playlist is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VGMxSUDBH8&list=PLLvlxwbzkr...

BTW the author has the following page https://projectivegeometricalgebra.org/ with great infographics and references

user070223··on Modern Wardriving (2023)
You can somewhat do it in Android, In the past by installing apps which worked as plugin for MicroG UnifiedNLP location provider. Now it's baked into MicroG GMSCore And you can configure external loaction service provider (or rely on GPS) like Apple, Google, Mozilla(before it was retired), BeaconDB etc.
user070223··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
same for research papers ( I think there is/are some prototypes but no big communities perhaps)
user070223··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
Looking into better compression algorithms inspired by ML, LLM techniques under different constraints. For example if the receiver has a prior knowledge because future devices will have some foundational models that already understand higher level concepts like how a human looks or speaks, do we really need to send the entire recording or just the "words", "intonation" etc and reconstruct it on device.

Fabrice Bellard and other has done some work in this domain https://bellard.org/

user070223··on Make Firefox Private Again
Yes, beta version for sure(just go to about:config), possibly it works on the normal version with the following method (which allows you to insert a user.js)

Other option is to use another gecko based browser check this https://divestos.org/pages/browsers

user070223··on Windows on ARM Is Here to Stay
Well if ARM laptops more power efficient, cheaper, faster which makes consumer choose it (either by going to iMac or installing linux) Microsoft might lose market share. It's also a great excuse to get new eye balls on legacy code and fix all king of issues

On another note: Windows have (by default) tons of legacy to support a lot of different hardware Am I wrong to assume that that most drivers on ARM cpu running through virtualization? Does Microsoft actually build them or get them from partners to install on the system

user070223··on Why blue animals are so rare
Reminder to everyone:

Plants are green(On earth) because they reflect the green color (which the sun spectrum is strongest) because they have probably adapted to better regulate different lightning condition during the day, for this they use two different pigments (chlorophyll a(blue), chlorophyll b(red); or other pairs)

user070223··on Why blue animals are so rare
The Sinai agama turns blue during the breeding season to attract females and it might be why blue connote to ribaldry

No I'm not; I was surprised(for some reason I though Interpol is a european thing) and showed some resistant but they just wanted to check in. I did look up now and found multiple cases where interpol was involved in bolivia as well as car with the logo, and officers with hats \_o_/

user070223··on Bolivia's little-known African tribal kingdom (2021)
It only takes one mistake to fall off, it could be mechanical failure, hole in the ground after rain, someone in front of you stopping / looking back which cause them to drift (that what happened to me had to break hard and fell) I saw a video from helmet go pro of some girl hanging on shrubs on her life Nevertheless 40 km downhill with beautiful scenery would do it again :)

Kris Lane[0] has excellent work on potosi

Potosi - "the first global city" [1] Potosi: The Silver City That Changed the World by Kris Lane[2]

I've encountered Kris's work during the pandemic; He released a book "Pandemic in Potosí: Fear, Loathing, and Public Piety in a Colonial Mining Metropolis" [3] about the pandemic in 1719 which killed third of the city

Potosi as a silver hotspot had a coin mint, and of course it had a fraud[4]
