user00012-ab··on FCC fines Charter, LTD Broadband more than $3M for RDOF defaults
can we fine fiercetelecom.com for breaking the back button on that linked page?

and if you don't want a broken internet, stop sharing sites that break the internet.

user00012-ab··on Prose.sh – A blog platform for hackers
So there is a new content platform on hacker news almost weekly if not more. I doubt most people are going to sort through a ton of "my first posts" posts on each new platform to look for something interesting.
user00012-ab··on Prose.sh – A blog platform for hackers
That's good to know, ""discover some interesting posts" should be a curated list of things like that to get people in the door.
user00012-ab··on Prose.sh – A blog platform for hackers
It was mostly an "Old man yells at cloud" post. I'm always excited about small communities online, since in theory they aren't pandering to the lowest common denominator, so there is a chance they could have more specific and interesting content, like back in the day when magazines could target a specific group of people and have in depth articles on tech, instead of today where they have to write for the lowest common denominator to reach the most people for ads.
user00012-ab··on Prose.sh – A blog platform for hackers
I click on "discover some interesting posts" and none of them were interesting; same issue I have with most everything on reddit, all the posts are "I POSTED!"

The only reason I bring this up is because it is a "Platform for Hackers" but none of the posts really reflect anything like that. Just seems like another new site where people post the "I'm on this site now, and setup a default page" and then it never really goes beyond that.

There was some pub/bar themed Gemini site awhile back, and every new post was some variation of being in a virtual pub; again, nothing interesting and I moved on.

user00012-ab··on Show HN: tere – A Faster Alternative to cd+ls
Simple bash to do mostly the same thing:

bind -x '"\C-p": cd "$(dirname "$(fd | fzf )")"'

user00012-ab··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
You could mount a small laser pointer in your window pointing directly into their camera.
user00012-ab··on Ev Williams to step down from Medium
I also skip any article that is from medium, not just because of the noise on the screen, but medium seems to just be people "building their brand" by repeating what other people have already said.
user00012-ab··on Ask HN: Has Marvel got out of hand?
Everyone is just ripping off DBZ. Fight, Lose, Train, Fight, Win!

And add a healthy dose of screaming in between each step.

user00012-ab··on Meta Accounts: A New Login for VR
too late; already moved on.
user00012-ab··on DevOps is a failure
Meh... Dev is just clicking on whatever your IDE autocompletes for you. With copilot you do even less. I think some programmers out there have some big heads that need popping.

Building out and automating cloud infrastructure so your simple code can work is way more complex than most things you do every day. But ya, keep telling yourself how smart you are as your write "connect to database, return a value" for the 1000th time.

user00012-ab··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
I use http://dynalist.io you can clip anything into your inbox, either the url (default when nothing is selected), or selected text on the page (with url of where it came from), and it works on all platforms. Once you have your data in a list you can do whatever you want with it and curate it the way you want, search it, and tag it.

Also, you can export the data out pretty easily also, which may not be the case with other bookmarking services.

user00012-ab··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
Seems like a good way to weed out people that are constantly taking time off to deal with kid issues.
user00012-ab··on The Danger of Minimalist Design
I'm surprised he didn't bring up cars; back in the day, cars had character, now they all have the same generic aerodynamic car shape.

But I'm glad someone else thinks this, I've always thought it was kind of sad that building are so boring compared to building of the past which were covered in so many details.

I was also wondering if some of this is tool related, as in, when using cad it's hard(er) to add those details in, so what you get are these boring cad created forms. Back when people designed interesting buildings, It was on paper, and they could do anything their imagination let them. One reason I find it's a bad idea to start on the computer as you are limited to how well you know how to use the program.

user00012-ab··on Apparently macOS sometimes just kills some apps randomly
The linux oomkiller also does what you are saying. If you are out of memory, it "randomly" picks a process to kill/eject.

People even use the same analogies. https://chase-seibert.github.io/blog/2009/04/23/the-case-of-...

user00012-ab··on I love the Linux desktop, but that doesn't mean I don't see its problems
The problem is there is no decent software that runs on linux; I'd switch from Mac to linux if I could run Ableton, Adobe_products.* or Affinity_products.*

And no, I don't want to hear about the software XYZ that is almost just like any of the above, because they aren't even close.

If I just wanted to browse the web, and work in a terminal, then linux is great.

user00012-ab··on Tesla won’t give drivers their own crash data without a court order (2018)
Why do people post "news" from 4 years ago? News mostly isn't relevant a few weeks later; it would make sense if their was some follow up story or something about this. Even weirder is how people comment on this story like it just happened, did anyone actually check to see if this is still the case 4 years later?
user00012-ab··on Tesla Is a Confidence Game
Anyone. All I saw was the link to some guy raving on twitter in a long series of tweets. Should have went with the book link, would have made him seem more credible.
user00012-ab··on Tesla Is a Confidence Game
If you want people to take you seriously, don't communicate in a series of tweets; on the other hand if you want to look like a raving lunatic on the internet, go ahead and spell out your manifesto in a long series of tweets.
user00012-ab··on Show HN: Find Subreddits for Your Niche
People keep saying how great Reddit is, but I tried signing up to a bunch of my "Niches" and all the posts where just low quality junk; for example every other post in the 3dprinting subreddit is just "MY FIRST PRINT!" or "I BOUGHT A THING!" and for some reason people think it's cute so they upvote it. EDC? here is another picture of my gun! Tech reddit; "here is a link to a medium post that you can't see unless you subscribe!".

And the rest of the posts are just people re-asking the same questions over and over because they can't be bothered to search.

Reddit is just a fire hose of low quality content.

user00012-ab··on TikTok and the network effects of creativity
Are you sure this isn't more of the Medium model, where they can show you a bunch of new people all the time, but you'll never actually follow them or see them ever again (just another nebulous medium post)? So really the only person that profits in this model is the company hosting the content.
user00012-ab··on WhatsApp delays privacy changes following backlash
How Cancel Culture works:

Day 1) Users are outraged and company says there will be changes! (Twitter bans Trump)

Day 2) Users are angry and company shows changes they will be making (yup Trumps account is gone.)

Day 3) Users move on to something else and company goes back to whatever they want to do (Trump posts video on twitter, but this one is ok, we'll let this one slide.)

Give it a few days and WhatsApp will be back to business as usual.

user00012-ab··on Centering in CSS
Just use "<center>data</center>"

seems to work every time.

user00012-ab··on Just how many people do we need doing that job, anyway?
If it got rid of all the content farm creators and just left people that really wanted to create, then yes.
user00012-ab··on Facebook says Apple’s iOS 14 changes could hurt its ad targeting
When you lock the chicken coop door at night, I have to kick it open, and that hurts the chickens. If you just leave it open all night, then I wont' have to kick it open, and no one will get hurt (well at least from me kicking the door open.)
user00012-ab··on Facebook says Apple’s iOS 14 changes could hurt its ad targeting
Why would I care if you can't use marketing psychology dark patterns to take advantage of me to give you money? It seems like watching this industry fail would be better for my well being.
user00012-ab··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
I think they are confusing musician with "content producer" Musicians make the music that we end up listening to 20 years later, content producers are the ones that create crap for us every day so we don't get bored that day.
user00012-ab··on Stack Overflow gets series E funding for $85M
A dystopian science fiction story where Yahoo buys Stack Overflow, destroys it like all their other products, and in the doing so, no one knows how to program anymore and society collapses.
user00012-ab··on One company's plan to build a search engine Google can't beat
which is weird, because I have never found a useful response on reddit. I find people asking the exact question I have, but then there are either no responses, joke responses, or people also asking for help.

I'm still tricked every time though, I see the result matching exactly what i'm looking for, I disable my reddit block from browser, click the link, and am 99.9% of time disappointed in the result.

user00012-ab··on Show HN: Pond, a lo-fi social newsletter service
It would be nice to see a sample of what you get before you have to sign up. But I'm assuming this will have the same problem I have with every other new service like this, the content just isn't interesting enough to make it worth the while.
