us0r··on In Serving Big Company Interests, Copyright Is in Crisis
> think of Taylor Swift's battle to perform her own music at an awards show where she was being named "Artist of the Decade" shortly after rights to her back catalog were sold to a "tycoon" whom she has a longstanding feud with.

Her dad was a shareholder and sat on the board of said company that sold to the "tycoon". Horrible example.

us0r··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
>It’s up to the passenger to verify, but Uber should make violations easy to report.

They are. Click a trip, scroll down, click "my driver was unprofessional", click "my driver didnt match the profile in my app".

The problem is most people dont report stuff to uber. I hear stories all the time from people and everytime I ask if they reported the driver they say no.

us0r··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
They have had this since 2016[0]. The problem is you have uber logic behind it. The only time it asks me to verify is when I'm on the highway and turn the app off and back on. I guess they think I'm tossing the phone to the car next to me while going 65?

us0r··on Uber proposes policy that would pay drivers a minimum wage of $21 per hour
>"minimum of $21 per hour while on a trip"

Am I the only who notice the last 4 words? This will effect very few drivers as most are already making > that "while on a trip (and not stuck in complete grid lock)".

us0r··on YouTube isn’t for kids, but kids videos are among its most popular
> He said that the platform’s stated age policy is largely a ploy to avoid complying with the law, which makes it illegal to collect data on children under 13 without parental consent.

Getting tired of my at the time 6 year old videos being mixed in with mine, I tried to make an account for her and set the age to 6 and it was shutdown. I had to get out a credit card and jump through hoops to get it back on. I wish I could set an age and language filter on YouTube. For now its you can watch anything in your subscriptions and the off chance you want to watch something new we'll help.

Apparently all kids like to watch the same thing over and over again which is why the view counts are so high but i don't doubt YouTube is the most popular site for kids. Not sure about the ad stuff cause I pay for premium.

Another whale for Amazon:

>In April 2018, the Company executed an amendment to its existing agreement with Amazon Web Services (“AWS”). The amended agreement was effective as of May 1, 2018 and continues through July 31, 2023. The Company has minimum annual commitments of $50.0 million each year of the agreement term for a total minimum commitment of $250.0 million. As of January 31, 2019, the Company had a remaining minimum payment obligation of $212.5 million to AWS through July 31, 2023.

Sure. Right after you ask any driver if they want to be told when to work, where to work and how to work.

>In October 2018, the Company entered into a cloud services agreement for third-party hosting of the Company’s software platform through October 2021. The Company is committed to spend a total of $13.5 million for the services through the term of the agreement

Not as bad as some of the others lately but this works out to around 375k/month.

us0r··on Lyft Files S-1
>In January 2019, we entered into an addendum to our commercial agreement with AWS, pursuant to which we committed to spend an aggregate of at least $300 million between January 2019 and December 2021 on AWS services. If we fail to meet the minimum purchase commitment during any year, we may be required to pay the difference, which could adversely affect our financial condition and results of operations.

Not as bad as snap but what could they possibly be spending $100 million a year on?

us0r··on Shazam removed all 3rd party SDKs from its iPhone app

us0r··on Amazon employees protest sale of facial recognition tech to law enforcement

I really wish Google would step up and put some of its power to use and stop Stephanie (My Google listing expert) from calling me (and probably thousands of others) 3 times a day. I have given them plenty of info and even offered to buy their bullshit so they can follow the money. Google couldn't be any less interested.
us0r··on United States v. Microsoft Corp. Dismissed [pdf]
I still think there is a lot more to this case. The risk of losing on both sides was way too high for a drug dealer. Why wouldn't they just request the data using Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty? They had no problem doing it for the kickasstorrents guy (https://torrentfreak.com/images/KAT-complaint.pdf).

us0r··on After alleged 'bait and switch,' Nevada DMV cancels $78M IT contract
Personally I have no doubt someone has a job offer at oracle or two people are exchanging envelopes. If the vendor suggested Oracle maybe not but since it was someone at the DMV, 100%. I'm about 90% sure Oracle isn't even fully implemented in any DMV.
us0r··on After alleged 'bait and switch,' Nevada DMV cancels $78M IT contract

us0r··on After alleged 'bait and switch,' Nevada DMV cancels $78M IT contract
EDIT: NV always responds really fast to info requests but this one is taking a while. I specifically asked for reference letters with everything else. Who ever filled in the info on the BOE meeting clearly lied. They've had a contract with another state and my guess is unhealthy.

http://purchasing.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/purchasingnvgov/conte...

They want something "cloud ready" yet acquired $600,000 of Oracle cloud licenses (what ever that is)?

"The Department purchased and received Oracle hardware, Oracle Software, Network and security Hardware and Software, and the Oracle Cloud Software. The hardware is located in both the Department's Carson City and Las Vegas (Flamingo) server rooms. To-date, the purchase cost for hardware and software is $11,408,412.

The cost breakdown is as follows: 1. Oracle Hardware - $3,000,000 2. Oracle Software - $5,900,000 3. Oracle Cloud Subscription - $618,000 4. Security-Network software and hardware - $1,890,412

Total Costs $11,408,412"

http://budget.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/budgetnvgov/content/Meeti...

Page 262. "This is a new contract to provide, design and implement a new system to replace the existing and aging client server application. The modernization of the current system will provide better customer service, reduce transaction processing time, increase speed-to-market of NV DMV products and services, enhance security and reduce system backlog"

Very clever choice of words. I'll bet the board who approved that contract didn't know they signed a contract for nothing.

From their own site:

"The solution will be migrated to the Oracle technology stack"

So they are going to migrate 4 years worth of Dynamics customizations (which aren't even working) to the Oracle technology stack. Right. No shit they didn't even show up.

us0r··on After alleged 'bait and switch,' Nevada DMV cancels $78M IT contract
Read the audit i posted above. The contractor didn't even show up LOL
us0r··on After alleged 'bait and switch,' Nevada DMV cancels $78M IT contract
Audit: http://budget.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/budgetnvgov/content/IAudi...

This one is extra bad. Not even a communication plan? They did manage to spend $13 MILLION on Oracle shit though. The best part is the solution they sold, which is not even working in New Hampshire, and was built on DynamicsCRM (not portable to oracle)

The grand finale:

"The contract was amended in February 2017, which extended the termination date for an additional year for maintenance coverage. It also increased the maximum amount of the contract by $3 million, primarily for additional hardware and software."

That person needs to be fired immediately and probably arrested.

Probably not but I would be happy to do $30-$50 depending on whats included. I prob only read a couple of articles on each which is another reason.

> If not, then you've answered your subsequent question (why haven't they done this)
