I run Data Science retreat (DSR) in Berlin.

DSR is the market leader in EU for machine learning training. DSR helps coders or people with significant quantitative training (e.g. science, engineering, or math graduates) ramp-up rapidly for a data science career - arguably the fastest-growing, highest-demand profession. Our participants have an average of 5 years of industry experience.

DSR is a 3-month, in-person, rigorous, and full-time/intensive course in the startup-capital of Europe: Berlin. You’ll learn software engineering, data science, business analysis and communication faster and more deeply with mentors doing code reviews and pair-programming - all on real-world data and problems. You will develop a portfolio project, demonstrating you can own a business problem, solve it, and communicate why your results are definitive.

You bring your training, tuition, and drive to master our curriculum alongside our world-class mentors and partners. Towards the end we provide a networking event with top-tier technology companies, where you will show off your new skills and portfolio project, likely leaving with a career-changing job.

urlwolf··on Bootstrap 2.0, From Twitter
I found two, but they are not worth mentioning. They just copy the graphic elements instead of using the CSS library. For a WP framework that uses a good CSS library, see xtreme-one (it uses YAML). This match (general CSS lib + wordpress theme) is great, I agree.
urlwolf··on Poll: HN readers, where's your residence?
Berlin.
urlwolf··on Man Survives Steve Ballmer’s Flying Chair To Build ’21st Century Linux’
This is mostly and ad for cloudfoundry. Which is fine, because I didn't know about the service, and now my curiosity is piqued.
urlwolf··on What If Government Were Like An Ipod? [Scott Adams]
"What about the citizens who don't have access to the Internet? We could change the constitution to make Internet access a basic right. That feels necessary for a healthy republic in the modern age."

The Pirate Party, who just got 8% of votes in Berlin, Germany, advocates exactly this.

urlwolf··on Yes, Google Drive Is Coming. For Real This Time.
I guess the question here is, will it be encrypted (like wuala) or not (like Dropbox)? If google needs to monetize this by reading txt and targeting ads, my guess is the second... which would make it a no-go for many business.
urlwolf··on Opera acquires Handster (mobile application store platform company)
I wish them best of luck. Opera is a company that deserves more success and attention than they are getting.
urlwolf··on Intel may be pulling the plug on MeeGo
Well, I'm not surprised. I was in their AppUp event. We all got a meego tablet (exopc). All people I know have installed a different OS on it. It was prealpha, and most things didn't work. There was no point to develop for it.
urlwolf··on Speech Recognition Leaps Forward
Does anyone know if this will impact applications soon enough to matter to the typical startup that could benefit from better speech recognition?
urlwolf··on The Calculus of Grit
I bought the very first edition, just to be disappointed. There's nothing in the book as good as the Gervais principle. The blog is superior. The book is a coffee-table theory of of everything, (or everything about the mind). A bit like what Wolffram did, but poorer. He's well read, but still manages to cite things wrong, partially, or not at all. It feels like Gladwell, with more ambition, and less respect for the audience.
urlwolf··on Poll: Do you use Opera (the browser)?
I used it from v 5 on, then moved to FF when Opera's lack of plugins and compatibility probs. killed it for me. Then, I went chrome > FF with vimperator > back to opera. Opera is the best keyboard-shortcut-driven experience ever. Try shift-arrows. With addons, it no-contest the best browser for me.
urlwolf··on Poll: Do you use Google Reader on a daily basis?
I use the opera feed reader, it's fantastic. Much faster than greader to move around, works offline.
urlwolf··on Google Chrome’s amazing growth spurt. The top web browser by June 2012?
I, as mostly everyone else, was not paying attention to Opera. I rely on shortcuts, so pentadactyl and FF seemed the only way to go. Well, I have to say Opera with vimperopera is better. The shift-arrow navigation is a killer feature.

M2, the mail client, actually makes me open gmail much less...

urlwolf··on (debunked) PayPal vulnerability allows access to any account within 30 seconds
I just did this, but it tells me they cannot close the account because there's a transaction open. I bought a domain yesterday. This is with the German paypal, and a German bank, which are known to be the among the most retrograde and cumbersome. Does anyone have a workaround?
urlwolf··on Taskwarrior is a time and task management tool (terminal)
You could try 'task X start' and 'task X stop', this is what we use to see how long things take. but yes, no reporting...
urlwolf··on Taskwarrior is a time and task management tool (terminal)
The calendar in the screenshot is misleading; the power of this tool comes from: (1) being always available (who doesn't have a terminal open?) and (2) having a powerful command language.

It's the only todo tool that I actually use. It removes the friction of having to have a web-based one open, find the window/tab, click on the appropriate textbox, etc.

The devs listen to comments, and think carefully new features. I was added to the list of contributors for 2.0 just because of an idea I suggested. Very active project. Cannot recommend enough. Our startup uses it instead of a whiteboard.

urlwolf··on Let's just use Emacs
For those who prefer a language with namespaces (python) sublime editor is a good modern alternative.
urlwolf··on Ask HN: effects of a sociopath on an early stage startup
You are right. I guess I needed to put it in writing to realize that these things are not normal. Even for a sales person who should 'always be negotiating'. This guy is out.
urlwolf··on Ask HN: effects of a sociopath on an early stage startup
The question is whether all other people we interview will exhibit the same traits.
urlwolf··on Gentoo Linux LiveDVD 11.0 Released
Well, sabayon, the binary derivative, is stuck in the top 6 of distrowatch for a while. I don't think things are going downhill there. Competing with debian derivatives is no joke, considering that the tech skill required to adopt the distro is far higher. Beating Arch on a live CD :)
urlwolf··on Poll: What OS do you currently use?
Sabayon, all the power of gentoo with sane defaults, rolling release, and more stable than Arch.
urlwolf··on Amarok 2.4 "Slipstream" Released
I do love cmus, but I can't find a way to understand how it deals with some tags. Some songs are not displaying using the titleformat string I have. No idea why. Maybe they are missing a field? Conflickting ID3.2 tags v.3 and v.4? No idea. No time to dig deeper...

Still my main player.

urlwolf··on Ask HN: Share your .emacs (or .vimrc?)
Here's my .vimrc: https://github.com/quesada/dotfiles/blob/master/.vimrc

The nice thing is that all the plugins are from the package manager; it takes me 2 min to get a working install. Sabayon is great.

urlwolf··on Poll: What level of education have you reached
I wonder how many PhDs are doing startups. I sense it's a big chunk of 'other' (+1 from me).
urlwolf··on WorkFlowy (YC S10) launches a better way to organize your brain
Looks and feels good. However, it conflicts with vimperator, which is a no-go for me... I'm sure a workaround can be found. Good job.
urlwolf··on What's missing from desktop Linux
Well, trying to make linux more like OSX or win (which is what xfce, KDE and GNOME do) is bounded to fail. I think there are qualities on linux that are both unique and elegant, for example tiling window managers. This is where most research in UX should go. Users of others OSs are not stupid, they long for enhanced productivity. If they see it in say a tiling WM, they may want it, and currently the only way to get it is in linux (more or less).
urlwolf··on Posterous silently changes all external links to affiliate links
Well, I'm not as torn as the author. They are altering the original content of the author, even if the result is the same.

Imagine that someone's religion believes that you go to hell if you use affiliate links... posterous would have condemned them! (dramatizing works)

urlwolf··on GVIM+IPython with Conque plug-in
ncurses supported... will this work with bpython? A pity I moved away from vim recently.
urlwolf··on PyDev Python IDE: code completion, integrated documentation, debugging
Pycharm beats this. I get the big news here is that the whole thing is open source now. The debugger in pycharm is great. I can't stand eclipse because there's no way to do softwrap (!). That means you cannot ust split windows, and that's the end of productivity for me.
urlwolf··on Programming languages, operating systems, despair and anger
Which is a problem orders of magnitude easier to solve than designing a language from the ground up.
