upsidesinclude··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
>so ... what should I do?

>replace my pans

>Get a reverse osmosis filter. Replace your cookware with something that doesn't contain PFAS. Don't use storage containers for food with PFAS. Check your water bottles.

Oh, so all of that would be a good start for anyone and everyone.

The test can help to determine if something, like blood donation, might be a reasonable course of action for a specific person.

This is a great test and a worthwhile addition to our understanding of how prevalent these substances are within the the body.

Any reduction of PFAS in the blood would be beneficial as they are endocrine disruptors.

Weird.

The thing you claim to be an activist for happens hardly ever, comparing the number of engagements citizens have with police.

The violation of your rights described on the slippery slope here is happening to everyone all the time.

You aren't concerned because it has not impacted you in a way that you perceive. It has impacted you, but you fail to draw the connection.

Government and police agencies breaking the law and ignoring the constitution is bad for America. The fact they hide this and other techniques is further evidence.

You should downvote your own comment so that the comments which promote her work and career are above yours.

The article mentions specifically in the note about backlash and vitriol that feminists need to give room for someone like her to 'exist' in the public eye.

There is also the important fact that this was written by her husband and founding partner.

At this point can we not just state plainly, the whole denial argument is predicated on politics?
upsidesinclude··on Are Electric Vehicles Better or Worse for the Environment?
Most cars are still sold without turbocharging. We are nowhere near maximizing combustion vehicles. That 100hp/l is somewhat in contradiction to your arguement.

The wide array of technologies for injection and burn efficiency are still largely unadopted as well.

The replacement costs of batteries at ~5-8 years of ownership are always conviently absent from the comparison between EV and combustion. No surprise.

EV are not in their infancy either, the first EVs are from over a hundred years ago and there have been models available since the 90s from major manufacturers

Sorry, this doesnt pass the smell test.

Snopes was a thing and that's about it.

"Fact Checking" was most definitely not a common, headline news tagline until Trump.

If you genuinely cant see the problem with intelligence agents pushing their weight around for political sway, then theres no sense in engaging with your arguments

upsidesinclude··on Why climate ‘doomers’ are replacing climate ‘deniers’
Yeah, i dont have to read that link to know it's garbage.

Guess what the concentration of coal is when mined. Clue: 100.

Guess the concentration of metal in ores when mined....

Please don't be misled by these types of fallacious arguments.

upsidesinclude··on All the arguments against EVs are wrong
What does a battery weigh?

Do you know that conventional gas is delivered to homes around the country, currently, on a semi-annual basis to supply total heating needs, by truck?

The infrastructure is nill for fuel cell vehicles.

Battery vehicles will be wildly burdensome to the electrical infrastructure if widely adopted. Trucking via EV is currently completely unacheivable with the energy capacity available. No discussion of charging capacity. Also, it adds tons (actual tons) of weight to the non-cargo load

upsidesinclude··on Why climate ‘doomers’ are replacing climate ‘deniers’
Not to be a doomer here, but have you considered what it will take in mining to achieve your goal? Not the least of which is the energy required to accomplish the task.

It is worth a moment of your time to understand.

At 82kgs of copper per vehicle

1.5 billion vehicles, doubling every 20 years

80 million cars produced annually.

Even if we only made EVs starting today. It would take almost 20 years to replace the cars on the road, by which point, the number of cars being utilized would have doubled. With all the copper produced on earth.

So that doesnt take into account large trucks or the windings for the transformers to charge the vehicles, nor does it take into account increases in output. Nevertheless, it is no small feat. Our lives will not be happier, richer or healthier as a result any time soon.

upsidesinclude··on Ocean Temperature
> between the 1950s and the 1980s, the temperature of the Antarctic Southern Ocean rose by 0.17 °C (0.31 °F), nearly twice the rate of the global ocean.

>The warming rate varies with depth: at a depth of a thousand metres the warming occurs at a rate of nearly 0.4 °C per century (data from 1981 to 2019), whereas warming occurs at only half that depth [sic]

So from 20% of two centruries we have developed a long term average?

The chart of excess ocean energy also relates the current ocean energy relative to an average which ends in 2006. If you're unaware this biases the end values upwards.

Calculating out their 2020 value to each kg of ocean water on earth for a depth of 700m gives 0.189Cal. In other words, less than 20% of one degree above an arbitrary average calculated on a century basis with 80% of the century data absent.

If this could just pretend to appear as science i would start to care.

upsidesinclude··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
Effectively. US universities work on a growth model, expanding their student body and capital investment for tax purposes and to increase profits. There is always some school that will accept a student for the sake of those unforgivable government supplied student loans
upsidesinclude··on Methane may not warm the Earth quite as much as previously thought
What about when seaweed is added to the feed which reduces methane emmission by 70%?

The numbers that go into these approximations are not reliable and that's the problem with trying to have some exacting figure 20-28 and use that to create policy.

Which is why we can know that it is just about creating policy.

One thing that is missing from his list is diet.

Not sure what you eat, but if you told me you were eating fresh fruits and fermented vegetables daily and avoided most processed foods, I would be shocked.

He mentioned "supplementation" and has a few things listed, none of which I would adhere, but general antiviral supplements (proven clinically, just search it) would certainly help you.

Quercetin+EGCG+ceylon daily This is a well regarded treatment regime for chronic viral infection

Or just garlic extract and ceylon extract if your budget is tight.

upsidesinclude··on Using solar farms to generate fresh desert soil crust
That's a reasonable and fair argument I can accept.

However, I think the idea of the "anti-renewablist" is misguided. There are sceptics who fear advancements for the sake of advancement alone. Plastics are one perfect example (PFAS, PBA, etc). We are only beginning to understand how horribly these things disrupt organic chemical & hormonal balance. Scepticism is not your enemy.

>turned in to food...

I should hope they just keep it food. ;

I was commenting more on the uses of government subsidy. Unless things changed significantly in more recent years, ethanol was never all that affordable.

To wit:

"...53,956 BTUs per gallon to manufacture ethanol. The best existing plants use 37,883 BTUs per gallon" (1)

The manufacture of ethanol is both subsidized directly and subsidized indirectly through the use of fossil fuels to provide the energy of production. It is generally the case that ethanol cannot be made feasibly (cost) by burning ethanol.

upsidesinclude··on Using solar farms to generate fresh desert soil crust
This sounds great and seems like a 'no brainer' if you grew up in the desert.

I wonder why these studies don't focus more attention on current infrastructure though.

Urban buildings have equally massive footprints and are already on the grid.

The entire urban highway system of blacktop is tied to the grid and acts as a thermal mass, increasing ground temperatures and contributing to the heat island effect. Why not cover it?

upsidesinclude··on Using solar farms to generate fresh desert soil crust
And it's such a shit product...

Subsidy to set food production at odds with energy is a colossal error

upsidesinclude··on Using solar farms to generate fresh desert soil crust
> in soil from CdTe panels, their methodology is to grind the panel into a fine powder and scatter that on the ground.

Sounds a bit off, but consider the effect of having the glass thrown into a landfill where it will be bulldozed, day after day, for several years. It is just jumping to the end of what would be the eventual outcome after a few decades of disposal.

I don't find that to be an arguable study design.

"Anti-renewable propoganda" is certainly a thing, but it's also true that many champions of renewables keep their blinders on when it comes to making assessments.

Solar and nuclear are the demonstrably effective means of producing large scale power, but they don't provide portable energy density (the kind we demand). Battery technology has finally come into the realm of competition, but that has been with extensive and persistent research for decades.

upsidesinclude··on Physicists discover that gravity can create light
You seem educated on some matters, so please reply here. My physics education stopped at modern physics (optics, general relativity) so I'm missing the core mathematics of quantum mechanics and deeper dives into particle physics.

In the actual summation, does the calculation of vacuum energy take into account a cross section of neutrinos and extended "particles". I've always found the concept of vacuum energy lacking in that most(even physicists) do not fundamentally conceptualize a permanent neutrino and elementary particle flux in all but the most astoundingly shielded vacuum.

If there is a medium in which to effect the refractive index, then isnt this an interaction of the molecular structures therein?

upsidesinclude··on The NIH has poured $1B into long Covid research, with little to show for it
It is just strange to read this list as if it isn't a normal part of life.

Your first five-seven are just standard day to day living and if you lived that way, it seems to me you would never experience "long covid".

Note: Marathoning and other extreme excercise activities are not normal, regardless of how large the communties may be.
