unwantedLetters··on Ask HN: Should I learn C?
Yes.

I'm sure there are many reasons to know C/Assembler. But I felt like learning things like why:

obj.getField().setFirst("random"); obj.getField().setSecond("random");

is worse than

Field field = obj.getField(); field.setFirst("random"); field.setSecond("random");

Another reason I used to like C was that it always made me want to make my code run as fast as it was possible to run. When I write code in Java, I'm looking to make the code work. I'm not saying either is better, they just each have their plus points, but I enjoyed C more due it's challenges and feel I'm a much better programmer for knowing it.

unwantedLetters··on Drop out nation: Has the GED done more harm than good?
I'm sure the GED did some good for some people and that it has some purpose (the author addresses this as well by saying that passing the GED helps self esteem in inmates).

While I understand that you are simply stating your case, I don't understand how your case is relevant to the article. I'm obviously missing something, so it'd be great if you pointed out what I was missing.

Scary Stuff.

unwantedLetters··on Git for Computer Scientists
I sort of disagree.

I feel that presenting a bunch of DAGs does tie it in to Computer Science for sure. Graphs are an integral part of Computer Science, and to present it from that perspective does make it more "Computer Science-y".

I agree that to assume that only Computer Scientists (or people who have majored in Computer Science degree) understand what a DAG is, is elitist.

unwantedLetters··on Soccer and the law of large numbers
Does anyone have any ideas on what exactly can be done to improve scoring?

I think increasing scoring would take something away from football (soccer) rather than add to it, but it will be interesting to hear how exactly people think the rules should be changed.

unwantedLetters··on Drawings of Scientists by kids
This REALLY makes me wonder which I'd want to be: http://ed.fnal.gov/projects/scientists/dans.html

I love the effort, mystery and imagination that went into the first one. Would I want to be a guy that inspires that, or would I want to be the guy that inspires the normal "scientist" in the next drawing?

The first one brings about a sense of awe for these brilliant people that come up with fantastic answers to really difficult questions, while the second one reminds us that even the scientists are humans, and have a social life and enjoy themselves.

Both have their pros and cons.

unwantedLetters··on We just released VLC 1.1.0
Hey, no I haven't tried Lunettes, but I will try it as soon as I get the opportunity.

Thanks for the tip though, it looks very interesting.

unwantedLetters··on We just released VLC 1.1.0
Heh, I suppose this tells you what OS I use. Any plans of bringing that feature over to OS X?
unwantedLetters··on We just released VLC 1.1.0
I've wanted this feature for a while: to be able to just drag a subtitles file while VLC is playing a video and have VLC immediately start displaying subtitles from the new file.

It's a great piece of software anyway! Congratulations on the latest release.
