untech··on Tell HN: Windows 10 might have tricked you into using a online account
I wasn’t able to purchase Windows 10 license without switching to an online account.
untech··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
Using two 32 bit numbers for coordinates, each record would take 8 bytes, which is 64 gigabytes for 8 billion population. Don’t think many smartphones have this RAM today.
untech··on Boris, a tradeoff-oriented goal-setting process
I understand your sentiment, but I don’t agree that these workshops are of no consequence for the engineers who “do the real job”. These meetings will decide how many servers you’ll be able to rent and what headcount will you get.
untech··on Everything I wish I knew when learning C
This was my experience with learning programming as well, however, I am 2x younger :)
untech··on uupdump.net redirects to Windows insider preview program
Oh, it seems that HN replaced the redirected URL. Original URL: https://uupdump.net

There also was this three month ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32448999
untech··on uupdump.net redirects to Windows insider preview program
uupdump.net, a site for downloading official Windows ISO files, seems to be taken over by Microsoft.
untech··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
Well, non-nuclear WMDs are banned almost universally, aren’t they?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_weapons_of_mass_destru...

untech··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
Well, true, but it doesn’t seem to be enough. Too little transparency to public for this amount of power.

Maybe you can say instead that executive branch is too powerful by inference, and special services are just their instrument projecting this power, but I think that’s not the whole picture. By design, such services become a semi-independent branch themselves, and iirc they are not really rotated, at least on low-to-middle levels.

untech··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
UN should be reformed, of course.

What I meant was more like a world-wide WMD ban, some multilateral agreement, and I used UN more as a proxy of “international level”.

untech··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
God I hate security agencies of all kinds. Lots of power and zero accountability. They should be regulated by some UN-level treaty or banned entirely.
untech··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
Yeah, I was describing a perspective of a russia-born person who never actually travelled to the western hemisphere and whose knowledge of South American countries are formed by ambient osmosis, not active research. I know that no South American country supports the recent russian invasion (and thank god for that), but I was under the (apparently wrong) impression that there were non-trivial factions opposing the US. Ambient propaganda got to me, I guess. Sorry.
untech··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
> live happily in Moscow

Not an option for a majority of people who would host an online library, sadly. You can’t live happily in Moscow at the moment if you are capable of intellectual labour.

untech··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
Argentina on the first glance would look “safe” to me, as South American nations seem in general not very pro-US. Live and learn, I guess. TIL that all South American countries have these extradition agreements.

I feel bad for the arrested; even if their values were not pristine. Punishments for these kind of “offences” seem extremely harsh to me, being grown in a copyright-unaware climate.

untech··on Are We Prisoners of Geography?
I understand your sentiment. I think it would be more appropriate to say that “the world” should react, not “the West”.

And its world’s business if some country unilaterally declares other’s country part as theirs.

Although I think the world reacted appropriately. Non-trivial sanctions were imposed, almost no other country recognised the change.

Of course, Crimea issue is just another example of conflict of “territorial integrity“ vs “right to self determination” principles. World needs more formal rules.

(В любом случае, как мне кажется, справедливый референдум включал бы вариант «независимая Крымская Автономная Республика».)

untech··on Are We Prisoners of Geography?
You can argue that, but this would already be more deep analysis than described in your parent. I heard this take several times, and it’s basically “harry is a wizard, i. e. a superhero capable of anything, therefore, millenials want to gain everything without any effort, as if by magic”.

The “chosen one” trope is different. You can argue that Harry-Potter-raised people think of themselves as chosen, but it’s an old trope. You can as well say that all christian world is raised on it :)

untech··on Being Ridiculed for My Open Source Project (2013)
Maybe the reason is that is a command-line utility written in JS? This is quite normal today, but in 2013 it might be shocking for some people.

I think there’s still some hate towards JS now, and in 2013 it definitely was much more rampant.

Also funny to think that this project probably received so much hate because of being ahead of its time.

untech··on Show HN: A tool to help you remember shit you are interested in
Can you perhaps sell this as an automated/smart Obsidian? Personal knowledge bases are all the rage now, see a recent discussion of Obsidian 1.0.
untech··on The rise of biodigital surveillance
Wait, what are the other options? How do they do identification without IDs in other countries? I heard that you can use driver’s license as an ID in the US, but isn’t it issued based on an actual ID? And not everyone can drive, no matter how auto-centric the US might be.
untech··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
> I led the redesign of Obsidian 1.0

Wow! It’s a shame it’s not highlighted in release notes! Great news, and thank you for your work!

untech··on School vs. Wikipedia
Wikipedia is how you find a reference like The Art of Computer Programming for a given subject.
untech··on Making iron from sand [video]
Can you post a link to it? Sounds interesting.
untech··on Show HN: MyNotifier – Simple Notifications
Few nitpicks:

- Code example is not monospace, which looks unusual

- A really old iPhone model used for the screenshot

Browser: mobile Safari

untech··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Is it inspired by TE OP-1? Looks really nice :)
untech··on 2006: Dwarf Fortress
Well, “Royalty” adds quite interesting magic system, and “Ideology” adds belief systems, which are fun and are not required to be religious. You can have transhumanist female supremacists, who require their men to go around naked and really like weed parties.

Anyway, Royalty and Ideology are DLCs, so you can totally play without them.

untech··on Sustainable Infrastructure
I couldn’t help thinking all along that this “sustainable” infrastructure was powered by suffering of low-paid workers and extreme levels of inequality.
untech··on We may soon have city-spanning 900 MHz mesh networks
Mesh networks are cool, but they are a bit of overkill for solving problem of crappy $40/mo internet :)

(Writing this from my $8/mo 300 Mbps home connection. My 4G is $3/mo.)

untech··on I logged my activities at 15-minute intervals for the whole year
I used a combination of Google Forms and IFTTT-scheduled emails for that.
untech··on HopsFS: 100x Times Faster Than AWS S3
From the title, I though that this is a technology which gives you 100x faster static sites compared to S3, which sounded really cool. Discovering that it was about move operations was really underwhelming. The title is on the edge of being misleading.
untech··on Google, the Stupidity Amplifier (2016)
Yep, but that's also true in the case of classic links. If there is false information on the site behind a link (or in the snippet), which a user perceives as true, there is no way for a search engine to gather it from user's behavior.
