unshavedyak··on I put a datacenter GPU in my gaming PC
I really wish it was more common to use AI for augmenting than authoring. Eg i find coding with LLMs neat when you primarily "talk" to it through code, by filling out structs, funcs, fields, etc - where it would use your changes as the template and then to work to effectively autocomplete the gaps. The more you iteratively write the less it fills in, but also the less it deviates from your intent, design, etc.

I feel like writing could use a similar harness, where it attempts to minimally reword the authors sentences, perhaps just tweaking grammar, spelling, etc. In the coding example i think the human code would be near unchangeable, the LLM would pivot around it - but in the writing example i think the human writing would have to be more mutable. I imagine it would be a configurable setting.

I've not really seen a system which focuses on this human<->LLM look, but it feels interesting to me.

> Edit: i bet 99% of people here, if presented with a test where i gave 5 models but all of the results came from one, would not be able to discern this. Just vibes all the way down.

I think you're missing one (or more) of the facets individuals decide "better" is, for the subjective individual.

Early on i hopped between all the providers. Code quality for SOTA at the time was pretty decent if you didn't ask it to solve challenging problems. However the thing i found most difficult is consistency in how it listened. Eg Gemini (i forget what version, not current) was super prone to focusing solely on the functionality/goal, but not any of the directions on how to write the code. It would throw in comments everywhere, document in a manner i didn't want, use abstractions i told it not to, etc.

How well a model would follow instructions to drop their horrible "isms" was the #1 criteria for me. If i have to constantly remind the model not to do X behavior then it's a terrible model.

With that said, that is why i chose Claude for the last N months. However i've stuck with Claude because dealing with these "isms" and their little behavioral nuances is a chore in itself. I've found you have to learn the model just as much as anything, and so the idea of hopping these days when i'm just trying to get shit done is not likely.

These days for me personally, Claude has to give me a reason to switch rather than me investing even more money (i'm on the 20x plan) in other providers. I'm definitely not committed to Claude Code, but i am tired of the LLM churn, tooling churn, subscription churn, and the general fear of which providers we can trust.

edit: In short, it's the interactive UX just as much as it is the final output.

> Subscription-capable - Anthropic Claude Pro/Max (anthropic), OpenAI Codex / ChatGPT Plus/Pro (openai-codex), Kimi Code (kimi), and GitHub Copilot (github-copilot).

Am i reading this right? Seems to suggest that this can be used with Claude Code Subscription, which isn't true i think. Did this pre-date the CC Subscription change? Or is it playing fast and loose with the rules hah.

Maybe it's using `-p`, which technically works for another few days i think lol. (That's going away.. what, June 1st? Something like that?)

unshavedyak··on Show HN: Zot – Yet another coding agent harness
The ACP budget change is so bizarre to me. If i was more adventurous with my subscription i'd be interested to see if you could intercept UI/input from CC TUI and render that in a native GUI without it being a TUI. That would be "interactive Claude Code" but you'd get a programmatic interface.

But that would be banned almost instantly i'm sure lol.

unshavedyak··on Dynamic Workflows in Claude Code
Oh, yea here's all the proof you need. Even Zed themselves admit you won't be able to use Claude Code via ACP via Subscription: https://zed.dev/blog/terminal-threads

So yea, bcherny didn't reply to me but as far as i can tell - No, Zed nor VSCode will have Claude Code natively in it. The best we can do is embed a Terminal into the editor and run CC in that.

With that said, because bcherny advertised VSCode, i'm going to guess VSCode is going to get special treatment. Really annoying.

unshavedyak··on Various LLM Smells
Which seems logical - if they were somehow consistent between all LLMs i'd be even more curious how LLMs are... crab-evolving to 'isms, but hopefully that's not the case hah. (i say crab-evolving in jest)
unshavedyak··on Dynamic Workflows in Claude Code
to be clear, i'm referring to the recent fact where it appears that they're disabling all Claude Code (Subscription) usage from the SDK. Which ACP would be included on.

As usual though it's not super clear exactly what is allowed or not.

unshavedyak··on Dynamic Workflows in Claude Code
VSCode has an official client? Given IDE usage is being restricted from Claude Code via the CC SDK tokens going to the Claude API rather than your CC Subscription, i'm unclear which IDEs can actually use claude code now.

Eg is Zed capable of using a Claude Code Subscription?

unshavedyak··on Claude Code as a Daily Driver: Claude.md, Skills, Subagents, Plugins, and MCPs
Skills are effectively the same thing as asking it, just with more depth. So the skill is just a framework for a very precisely asked question. It often includes how you want Claude to respond, etc.

I’m not aware of anything fundamentally unique about skills or commands, they’re just more tokens to shape the llm

unshavedyak··on Stack Overflow’s forum is dead but the company’s still kicking
Exactly.

Ironically i'm probably a better dev purely because after a few experiences on SO, I would rather waste days/weeks banging my head against problems and learning from them than to actually post on SO. It was a miserable experience generally. For context this was probably ~15 years ago now.

This isn't necessarily to say that SO made me a better developer. Rather i'm just saying that i value (correctly or not) those extremely hard fought lessons. Those lessons where it was considerable pain, effort, time, misery, etc. Are they efficient ways to learn? I doubt it. But in my many trips down that road i developed intuition that i'd probably not have otherwise.

So ironically i guess SO made me a better developer by avoiding using SO at all cost. Conversely, i imagine i'd lack this value that i speak of entirely if i was 20 years younger and starting fresh today. Not sure i'd be better off though.

edit: By "using SO" i should be saying posting on SO. I of course searched and used data found on SO as often as i could. So to that end i am grateful for SO existing.

unshavedyak··on DeepSeek reasonix, DeepSeek native coding agent with high caching and low cost
That's fair, neither am i - i do tend to work in large, complex, full of legacy decision based codebases. Eg i have access to Sonnet (of course), but i choose to solely work in Opus because i find its output reads better, analyzes better, etc.

The "cost" is dumb models is just so high for me. Eg every bad decision they make increases my frustration quite a bit. Despite putting a lot of effort into my workflow to help reduce the number of decisions they make, they always will. So my hedge is always against that.. trying to reduce how insane they can be heh.

unshavedyak··on DeepSeek reasonix, DeepSeek native coding agent with high caching and low cost
This is fair, but i've found the different models to have different moods and require different interactions to get them to stick to just the specific edits i ask for, etc.

I used to surf the three big players frequently and got really tired of the effort needed to steer some models. In the end i ended up sticking with Claude because it required less steering effort. While not strictly reasoning, a models ability to follow clear directions consistently is something i'd consider part of its SOTA capabilities.

Eventually i just tired of exploring. I just want stability.

Which ironically is why i'm thinking about moving from Claude. The very basic IDE/-p usage getting removed from my plan is a UX stability issue. I'm trying to progressively improve my workflows and efficiency, not have to establish a new foundation anytime something shifts. Quite frustrating.

unshavedyak··on DeepSeek reasonix, DeepSeek native coding agent with high caching and low cost
It's pretty funny, i'm a $200/m Claude subscriber and i've had little need to use anything else. However the more Claude has been restricting my workflow (notably around the recent IDE/-p usage change) the more i've been wanting to go elsehwere.

I'm concerned since i really want SOTA reasoning, but DeepSeek still has me interested.

unshavedyak··on Bitcoin trader recovers wallet with help of Claude
> I would do the same but my issue is that the models are changing so fast, so I don't want to be left out of the next model cuz it only runs on an even newer GPU or something like that.

I think the same, and it's why i stopped caring about running llama/etc at home last year. That coupled with the models being dumb by comparison to SOTA really make me fine with waiting.

But in a year or two it's going to be difficult to resist at home, assuming the pace of improvement holds.

unshavedyak··on Bitcoin trader recovers wallet with help of Claude
I do, though they're not as bullet proof as you'd hope to my understanding. Hell i have one at the house level too - since i have an EV sitting behind that as well.
unshavedyak··on Bitcoin trader recovers wallet with help of Claude
Yea, but i don't consider them good enough. I barely consider SOTA good enough.

I'm hoping that by the time the rugpull happens with SOTA (claude/etc) that at-home will be in the 4.7-5.5 range? We'll see.

unshavedyak··on Claude AI recovers an 11 yrs old BTC wallet holding 400k USD
Yup. I was really close to buying $1000 (at $1) worth of BTC ages ago. I don't dwell because the stress of managing that through time would have eaten me away lol.

With that said, i do regret not at least mining/etc. Back then i could have mined in many ways, and getting into it as a hobby probably would have meant holding larger amounts of BTC in the long run.

unshavedyak··on Bitcoin trader recovers wallet with help of Claude
I am eagerly awaiting being able to run a strong local model. I'd hand Apple $5k right now for a Claude in a box. I know the cost might not be there now, just saying that is around my ideal price point.

$10k might even be worth it - but i'm assuming that the more expensive it is the beefier it is too, which also means more electricity.. and i already run ~6 computers/servers in my house. If a power surge happens i'm going to go live in the woods lol.

unshavedyak··on Claude for Small Business
Typically i use more than the 10x plan, i maybe use around 50% of normal, interactive usage.

Though because i have a sub i then try to work extra and /loop some to make use of my money. I use a simple home grown (all claude built lol) skill combo which i manage a TODO file, and then have claude read that and commit changes, and run a /loop against that.

Ideally i end the week with ~90% usage.

unshavedyak··on Claude for Small Business
$2k/m[1] is not something i could stomache for the quality i get from Claude Code, personally. I'm curious what your base number is for your 10x figure.

unshavedyak··on DeepSeek 4 Flash local inference engine for Metal
What do you use it for? I tend to just stick to SOTA (Claude 4.7 Max thinking), and put up with the slow req/response. I'm not sure what type of work i'd trust a less thinking model, as my intuition is built around what Claude vSOTA Max can handle.

Nonetheless eventually i want to build an at-home system. I imagine some smaller local model could handle metadata assignment quite well.

edit: Though TIL Mac Studio doesn't offer 512GB anymore... DRAM shortage lol. Rough.

unshavedyak··on Zed is 1.0
> It would be great if it supported more commands though!

What does it not support? I want to try and figure out if its shortcomings in the ACP/Claude SDK or if it's just features that Zed has yet to support?

unshavedyak··on Claude.ai unavailable and elevated errors on the API
I find it so funny that many of these harnesses sound like black magic and are completely mystical to me. I use Claude Code every day and yet i can't imagine the workflow of Pi. I also don't care to pay API rates just to experiment with them.

Largely though i'm happy with Claude Code w\ IDE integration, so i don't feel the need to migrate. Nonetheless i'm curious.

unshavedyak··on Warp is now Open-Source
I agree with you, BUT, we have licensing right? Ie couldn't the author have chosen a license that would have prevented this - if they had cared?

I'm unsure if we should lose sleep over something the author likely chose. Its their right to not care how the code is used, maybe we should abide their wishes?

Is there perhaps there's an issue with licensing? Eg there's no easy license akin to MIT for small time devs, but less open for $50M VC babies? Ie is there a scenario where an author like this wants something akin to MIT for small groups, but still doesn't want to be taken advantage of by massively backed corporations?

Heck, unless AI gets absurdly cheap - i feel like even this will be temporary. To your point, we don't do that now because it's not fun and no one broadly finances this sort of thing. However AI costs money, so why are we spending it now? I imagine it's just a temporary spend to explore the space, show what models are capable of, further embed usage of AI for future rugpulls, etcetc.

Point is unless it eventually becomes cheap enough that we all have this at home and can run SOTA analysis ourselves, this too will pass. I imagine it will get cheap enough fwiw, but.. yea.

unshavedyak··on Anthropic Joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
Shame that we have to choose between better financing of Blender for features we already want (Python API quality) and placating imo overly dramatic artists.
unshavedyak··on Anthropic Joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
You still assume the artist in those examples is real. It could be a team, a ghost artist, etc - yea it's less likely than music, but still. The connection itself is quite difficult too, given the ease in which someone could plagiarize others work - sure they have mechanical skill, but did they really invest in the painting or was it ripped off from others ideas?

I suspect your connection to real artists won't be impacted. This, like the music example, just highlights our assumptions.

I'm not defending this AI garbage fwiw, i just don't think it's as interesting as most people make it out to be. I adore music, and i connect with songs i connect with. I don't typically think about the possible ghost writers, teams of writers, ghost players, etc. The music either speaks to me or it doesn't.

Though i'm not trying to connect to the musician as a person. However, as i was illustrating - if i really wanted to connect to musicians at face value, that ship sailed many, many years ago. Far before AI.

There are ways to mitigate this, but that balance will always be there - it was before AI, and it will be after. It's an evolution. Not an enjoyable one perhaps, but it is nonetheless.

unshavedyak··on I Cancelled Claude: Token Issues, Declining Quality, and Poor Support
It's something strange because i never have these issues. I often run two in parallel (though not all day), and generally have something running anytime i look at my laptop to advance the steps/tasks/etc. Usually i struggle to hit 50% on my Max20.

Heck two weeks ago i tried my hardest to hit my limit just to make use of my subscription (i sometimes feel like i'm wasting it), and i still only managed to get to 80% for the week.

I generally prune my context frequently though, each new plan is a prune for example, because i don't trust large context windows and degradation. My CLAUDE.md's are also somewhat trim for this same fear and i don't use any plugins, and only a couple MCPs (LSP).

No idea why everyone seems to be having such wildly different experiences on token usage.

unshavedyak··on Less human AI agents, please
That's correct, though you'll still end up needing more than AST/LSP/etc for the same reason AST/LSP/etc isn't enough for me (the human lol), ie comments/docs/etc.
unshavedyak··on Less human AI agents, please
I actually still like LLMs for this. I use rust LSP (rust analyzer) and it supports this, but LLMs will additionally go through and reword all of the documentation, doc links, comments, var names in other funcs in one go, etc.

Are they perfect? Far from it. But it's more comprehensive. Additionally simple refactors like this are insanely fast to review and so it's really easy to spot a bad change or etc. Plus i'm in Rust so it's typed very heavily.

In a lot of scenarios i'd prefer an AST grep over an LSP rename, but hat also doesn't cover the docs/comments/etc.
