unrealp··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
When you can't smoke, if you stand and stare out of the window on your own, you're an antisocial, friendless idiot. If you stand and stare out of the window on your own with a cigarette, you're a philosopher. - RORY SUTHERLAND

So I think addiction is about meaning. Addiction activities are always meaningful activities. May not be pleasurable activities but always meaningful. To quit a meaningful activity, you need to replace with another meaningful activity. like exercise, help someone, do something good..whatever is meaningful to you.

unrealp··on Why adults still dream about school
India. Normal engineering degree. Still get dreams (age 42)
unrealp··on Our attention span is being robbed
4. Use the pomodoro method while working. >> helps me a lot. i keep 15 minute slots where i get phone offline and work. then at the end of 15 minutes do phone stuff for 10 minutes. you can get a lot done with pomodoro through the day.
unrealp··on Why 12 notes in Western music?
"'only' at 22 points given by nature" >> this isnt true. The sa and pa are non movable and dont have upper and lower shruti is for a practical reason. Tanpura, which is a drone instrument has typical tuning of sa and pa notes. Singers typically sing with tanpura, to get reference pitch. If singer sings variation (shrutis) around sa and pa, it causes acoustic beats (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_(acoustics)) where the volume appears to vary slowly. For example, tanpura sa drone string is tuned to 139 hz and singer sings 140 hz then audience hears beat of 1 hz. The beats are unpleasant so these shrutis are avoided. There is no 'natural' reason here.
unrealp··on Ask HN: Your admittedly useless side projects?
Its currently linux only, are you a linux person? I have started porting to windows recently. Once thats done, I wanted to sell it, not sure how many would be interested.
unrealp··on Ask HN: Your admittedly useless side projects?
A desktop application to learn singing. It inputs your voice from mic and shows spectrogram realtime and shows note you are singing on the graph. Also provides reference note sound on headphone so that you can sing the note accurately. Also provides random notes variations to practice.
unrealp··on Chaos: The real problem with quantum mechanics
Perfect. This is exactly what I thought when I watched the video yesterday. There will also be local variations in saturn's gravity.
unrealp··on Using a "proper" camera as a webcam
Using this way for last 1 year without any issue. My setup has canon d5200 with 18-55 lens. Camera is powered by dedicated plugged in power supply. For audio I use a separate headset. OS is ubuntu. Longest I have used is 5 hours continuous without any problems.
unrealp··on Emerging evidence that mindfulness can sometimes increase selfish tendencies
Meditation is like a drug. It puts you in an altered state of mind. So you need to be aware of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_and_setting

Without strong intention, clarity of purpose, things can go downhill.

unrealp··on Teen mental health is plummeting and social media is a major contributing cause [pdf]
1. life has gone better based on data - this means there is more opportunity to being successful. if you are still not successful then it becomes your problem. it is more like lost opportunity has more cost in today's world.

2. human mind scales input to output - emotional output range is fixed. if input is low, we become more sensitive, thereby retaining same emotional output range. in today's better society, people are becoming more sensitive due to this reason, so with higher sensitivity you react to more things (and random things like what you see on social media).

3. we disorderize more - once we label as (depressed/anxious....) it becomes a self-fulfulling profecy.

4. social media - having lot of random stuff - doesnt help to create stream of consciousness story. its rathere mix of random unconnected happenings.

unrealp··on Ask HN: Have you created programs for only your personal use?
A real time audio spectrum analyzer for vocal practice. It shows spectrogram and pitch/note of the sound. It also creates challenge notes for practice singing and plays the sound of that note for reference.
unrealp··on Sounding the alarm: How noise hurts the heart (2021)
Can this be learned? i see that on hearing loud noise there is a reflex that uses this muscle to protect the ear. Can one learn to do this consciously?
unrealp··on About those baby brainwaves
"Are we claiming nothing at all that happens to any of those 2 Billion children makes any difference?" >> B12 supplementation would certainly help some and is quite cheap on a mass scale. I think it boils down to what people want to read from these kind of studies.
unrealp··on Altruism under stress: cortisol negatively predicts charitable giving
i have gone through similar situation and i too might have spd and never been diagnosed. all that you say here resonates with me. for me other things are okay, but "I don't have a self or personality of my own" is something of a fundamental problem for me. because of this, when i interact with anyone, i tend to adjust to how they are. if i interact individually with person A and then individually with person B, the most confusing part is interacting with A and B together. confusing for people i mean and people think, oh this is not how you are. not able to dance and disconnection from body is another sad thing. i am 41 now and with time i think i have improved. i share more with people and care less about what people think of me. i hope it will improve for you.
unrealp··on Daily coffee may benefit the heart
I have a rare eye condition related to caffeine. If i drink caffeine for a few days (any form - coffee/coke/,,) i get retinal stroke. basically some capillaries in the eye block and i develop blind spot. I see noisy spot for a few days in vision and the visual system adjusts in software and i no longer see the noisy spot. This stopped happening completely since I stopped all caffeine. Some years back I drank coffee for a few days and happened again. Since the topic is heart related I am wondering of there is a connection to blood vessels damage. Maybe caffeine acts as a mild stressor? mild stressors are known to trigger the protective systems and thats why we see the benefits with respect to heart?
