unnouinceput··on ChatGPT for Teams
Can't you use the same account on multiple phones though? I thought this is a no brainer.
unnouinceput··on Rabbit: LLM-First Mobile Phone

Just like for games, "no, I don't think I will". I'll let the quirks be ironed first then I'll see the reviews.

unnouinceput··on Irish State announce plan to build a porn preference register for most of the EU
How about be a responsible parent instead and educate your kids about the dangers of internet/tech? Why limit the curiosity of teens? Let them explore, but do it responsible/under your supervision. Otherwise they will do it anyway but in the worse possible way and you'll have 0 say in the matter.
unnouinceput··on Can a pill prevent deaths from venomous snakebites?
Quote: "In a 2013 experiment conducted with a team of anesthesiologists in a research laboratory at UC San Francisco, Lewin allowed himself to be paralyzed with derivative of curare, a chemical typically administered intravenously as a paralyzing agent for surgical procedures.

Moments later, he said, “I couldn’t talk, felt dizzy and had trouble breathing.”

The team then administered the nasal spray, and within 20 minutes Lewin had recovered."

So it's a nasal spray, not a pill. Also a pill would take longer to be metabolized leaving the venom to do its damage longer. I'd say nasal spray or inhaler is the way to go. Or better, an epipen.

unnouinceput··on They want you to forget what a film looks like
Don't watch Terminator 2, the remastered version that just hit the internet. It's horrible. Read my other comment here on this thread.
unnouinceput··on They want you to forget what a film looks like
I had the displeasure to see the "remastered" version of Terminator 2: Judgment Day yesterday. I could not stomach it after 30 minutes. I had to dig around the internet an old DVD rip from 2000's of it to "wash out" my brain of the horror that remastered version inflicted upon my mind.
unnouinceput··on Ask HN: What's your "it's not stupid if it works" story?
I had Chromium component added to a project just to show the users the help file which was a giant PDF document. The PDF file was from a 3rd part vendor who didn't know better/refused to change the system so we had to show it "as is" to the users. Any PDF reader component we tried failed because the PDF file had some crappy features in it that none of those component knew how to parse. Chromium engine, for its hate that gets nowadays, had no problem with any of those PDF files.
unnouinceput··on God Is Dead So They Are Building a New One
Don't know how will be but I know how it is right now. Downvotes. Current god that you're not allowed to blaspheme against on HN is Rust. Try to tell Rust is just a shitty upgrade over C/C++ and you get downvoted to oblivion on HN. Watch how this comment will get downvoted as well.
unnouinceput··on A closer look at e/OS: Murena's privacy-first 'deGoogled' Android alternative
Quote:"“This feature is based on tracker detection. Facebook/WhatsApp technically don’t use trackers so they are green flagged regarding privacy,” Murena offered when we queried the high score for the Facebook app, adding: “We will improve this score by adding more information about personal data collection that can be found in apps Terms of Services.”"

Oh, OK then. Hard pass from me for this little experiment. Coming from a former communist country this is the equivalent of "I guess if the neighbor is not using video to rat you to state police he's a good guy and you can trust him with your anti-communist ideas" attitude. The river bed of Danube-Black Sea channel is ridden with the bones of people who trusted their neighbors.

unnouinceput··on Voyager 1 stops communicating with Earth
Because their power supply is shitty and it's easy to transform the chopper that is used in the switching power supply to behave as an oscillator instead, which will start to emit harmonics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply)
unnouinceput··on Proton Mail gets a desktop app for encrypted email and calendar
The problem is not when everything is written with web as the main central point, the problem is when you compare that with a previous version that was a desktop client first, then in a rush to make it cross-platform they fuck it up. Hence the hate for Electron, because 99% of Electron apps out there are like this.
unnouinceput··on Australia to ban engineered stone

unnouinceput··on Pascal for Small Machines
I feel that this submission is missing an year in parenthesis. Some articles seems that their latest info is from 2011 (Delphi 7 on Win 8, nothing about the XE phase that started then), others from 2015. Definitely nothing newer than 2017, which in this fast pace environment is equivalent to ancient history.
unnouinceput··on Gooey: Turn almost any Python command line program into a full GUI application
how? you're going to modify the binary so that it can accept command line parameters? or clone the GUI's functionality in a CLI? that's akin to just creating the application from scratch.
unnouinceput··on Gooey: Turn almost any Python command line program into a full GUI application
And then there is me who tries to fight with all my clients to have their GUI friendly applications to, at least, have command parameters, so that it can be automated through services/task scheduler/cron
unnouinceput··on Ask HN: What side projects landed you a job?
Not a project, per se, but this is how I got to become a freelancer.

I was bored at work in one day, in summer 2007, and I was searching on internet free tests to test my knowledge. I did that previously in 2000 when BrainBench was new, and I even got physical diplomas from them for free. So, in this summer I searched for BrainBench again, to test me to see how much I grew during these years, and I was disappointed to find now BB was paid. So during my search I found this site oDesk, which was a freelancer site, but also allowed you to take tests. Didn't cared about freelancing part, only testing. So I took some HTML, Delphi, SQL tests there in that day. On Delphi I was proud that I was on 2nd place, while on rest I was in top 5% of all people that tested. I published that and forget about them.

In November I receive an e-mail. Someone was contacting me on my oDesk account. I was like "wtf is oDesk?". Then I remembered about the day in summer whne I got bored and made an account on that site. Long story short, that was my first client, he hired me and I realized how short I was selling myself to companies in my country. In March 2008 I quit from the day job and went full freelancer ever since. Btw, oDesk, after acquired Elance, got renamed Upwork. I still, partially, get new clients on Upwork, though most of my new clients are now through recommendations from my previous clients.

If I wasn't bored that day, if I didn't created that account, I'd still be working for a soulless corporation in my country.

unnouinceput··on 10,000TB storage cartridges could become mainstream by 2030
See my other comment above about me using the cloud in an unorthodox way.
unnouinceput··on 10,000TB storage cartridges could become mainstream by 2030
Use cloud storage the unorthodox way, like I do. Make multiple accounts, then create a big file with your backup data (pictures, projects, etc) and write it in a VeraCrypt file. Then split this file in multiple files and upload each to accounts (I use protonmail, yahoo, gmail - a few different vendors in case one goes belly up I can still access the backup from the others).

It's a hassle at beginning to create the accounts but you can create a program that has an embedded browser (I use chromium) and then you can automate the tasks. Basically you just simulate keyboard and mouse over the chromium surface and the vendors are none the wise. I keep my info of each account into a local SQLite DB and the program does the automation, requiring minimal interaction from me. So the only real backup I need is that SQLite file. Rest is scattered around in the cloud with none having access to it but me.

unnouinceput··on Ask HN: Who needs help this holidays?
Thank you Alexander for opening this thread here, it's a great initiative.

Recently (like a month ago) I got involved in helping old people that are in villages around my town. We are a group of ~10 friends, which have relatives in those villages and as such we found out that there are old people, 70+, whom have low income pension and live alone. Their neighbors provide some help with physical activities around their house but that's all, since all are poor as well. Their pension provides them with minimal food to survive, but nothing more, basically they just wait to die.

We started to get money to help them with their medication, mainly arthritis and rheumatism, therefore our goal is to raise ~4k USD. Between us we raised ~1.5k USD, which covers the more stringent needs of their medications and that's all. The people we help are scattered around villages around Timisoara, Romania (my town) and with upcoming holidays season we feel that we'll have way less time to dedicate to this task.

Any help is appreciated. I never done anything like this before, I have 0 experience on raising money or setting up web portal, bank account or as such. I did made a mail address at helpvillagers@protonmail.com, so feel free to help me with advice, or questions there.

Thank you in advance.

Delphi, the successor of it still does that. Here is a link to an article about having a real project that contains a bit over a million lines of code. Has a video in it as well, and the comments there also discuss the times regarding Win64 compilation times:

unnouinceput··on Microsoft open-sources ThreadX
Quote: " Now, there is at least some hope that the Raspberry Pi Foundation might be able to get permission to release the source code for its version"

This is something that always irked me about RPi's. How the fuck, you, the hardware vendor, that's suppose to know the inner guts of your product, do not have full production for its software? That you need it to rely on undisclosed 3rd party blobs!! Yes, yes, I know about the politics and the business logic that led to this situation but that was at beginning, when money were need it. Nowadays they are in a good place in that regard, might wanna pivot so they fully control everything, but I guess once you go with a bad design, the complacent around that just grows.

unnouinceput··on YouTube blames ad blockers for slow load times, not the browser
I don't know what is happening here. I get on youtube every single day and I have Firefox with uBlock and NoScript, as I had them since ~2018 when I moved off Chrome. There is absolutely no delay for me at all. No change in any delay, same today as it was a week before or the weeks before that. Also I'm an uBlock user since times immemorial, on Chrome before Firefox too, so I never saw any ads. The only time I see ads are when my clients share their screen and trust me, I install uBlock instantly in their browser.

Smart contracts and NFT's are like cars and the blings clients put on their wheels. A car is a good thing, the blings not so much. So yeah, you should still learn to code smart contracts, NFT's are just one particular use of that. Oh, and they definitely still do smart contracts by millions nowadays in ETH blockchain.
unnouinceput··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
Yes it is. Same with flappy birds dude from Tencent. Try to do a simple game that is less found on internet, some obscure board game and you'll see how ChatGPT fails spectacularly. For those who knows Witcher 3 game, try asking ChatGPT to implement Gwent board game found within W3 world, or try to implement the board game Orlog that is found within the world of Assassin's Creed Valhalla game. See those implementations how they go - no need to do a GTA complex style one.
