unnouinceput··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
Quote: "For a limited time get the founder’s edition complete with accessories. Tablet, stylus, charging cable + extras"

Do they plan to apply Apple's style of asking for an arm for extra stuff that the rest of hardware vendors include by default? I wish good luck to them with that then. Hard pass

unnouinceput··on Computer scientists invent an efficient new way to count
"Computer scientists invent an efficient new way to approximate counting large unique entries" - fixed the title
unnouinceput··on VMware Fusion Pro: Now available free for personal use
Hyper-V does not have PCI passthrough and with that you lost me, while ESXi does. Also I want to test my multiplatform software on all major OSes (MacOs included) ESXi is then the only one that can run Darwin in parallel with rest.
unnouinceput··on Serial to Parallel Port Converter
And it's parallel to serial convertor, not what the title on HN says.
unnouinceput··on The world has probably passed peak pollution
If you really think the official numbers spilled by the communist party from there is the truth then I have a bridge to sell to you.
unnouinceput··on The world has probably passed peak pollution
2B humans out of 8B are in China. You do not have numbers for China nor, if you manage to get it, can those be trusted anyway. I feel that while the West started the downtrend, China will not offset that but surely pass as how much pollutants it spews. We are not out of the woods until China gets on board too.
unnouinceput··on The Time I Lied to the CTO and Saved the Day
CTO had personal connections with the vendor. I suspect personal means the wife or sister was there and they had this as a family business. You know "here is money from my company that go to your company and each of us will get a big pie off it" type of shady deal.
unnouinceput··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2024)
Quote from their site: "Our global and fully remote team is pioneering how the world connects to blockchains. We come from a wide range of backgrounds, from capital markets and Web2 to Web3, all with the shared purpose of building a world powered by cryptographic truth."

Crypto. They do crypto

unnouinceput··on Cheyenne Super Computer Auction
>...totaling 313,344 GB

Can you imagine the RAMDisk? Yes, you can. Especially in 20 years when it will be the norm. And also the Windows version that will require half of it in order to run /s

unnouinceput··on Let's Embed a Go Program into the Linux Kernel (2023)
Exactly!. It can be written in any language, Cobol if you want, it does not matter. Once compiled the "gas" does the actual magic, not Go.
unnouinceput··on I made an open source Windows app to rewind and search everything on screen
The site is not usable on Firefox even after I temporarily allowed JS to run in my NoScript setup. Perhaps it wants me to disable uBlock Origin as well? Not gonna happen, so there is that. For me this is a no go area regardless of how cool the app is.
unnouinceput··on Anyone got a contact at OpenAI. They have a spider problem
Yup, that's my impression as well. He's just nice to let OpenAI they have a problem. Usually this should be rewarded with a nice "hey, u guys have a bug" bounty because not long time ago some VP from OpenAI was lamenting that training their AI is, and it's his direct quote, "eye watering" cost (the order was millions of $$ per second).
unnouinceput··on A cheeky intern nearly turned MS-DOS into NSFW-DOS
The cheeky intern was not cheeky enough to obfuscate his code to make it past the code review and was caught. You can easily obfuscate your code by preparing it in several commits with each commit handling a little part that under the code review inspection of said commit appears not only benign but also necessary to the actual task your implement. And then in one final commit you put everything together and BOOM!, cheekiness implemented, while the manager and code reviewers are none the wise. Or that's how I did it in one such instance ;)
unnouinceput··on The "Eisenhower matrix" productivity hack
And then you put everything in the important/urgent cell and you're back with stuff piling in your inbox. Or, at least, that's me.
unnouinceput··on What's the fastest language in the world?
Why, in God's given in your language name, are you putting together such a wild zoo of animals from ancient times and different planets? It's like cramming together in one cage a dinosaur with a lion and a predator. Of course the predator will always win, don't you know already?
unnouinceput··on Sweden Is a NATO Member
Military it's inter-dependency, that' why we're allies. The whole point of an ally is to be inter-dependency of one another. I, for one, as a citizen of a NATO country, I am very happy with this arrangement.
unnouinceput··on Sweden Is a NATO Member
Isn't, at least officially, Hitler the guy that killed Hitler? Or that was the joke and it flew over my head?
unnouinceput··on Writing a Minecraft server from scratch in Bash (2022)
You can always use reader mode of your browser.
unnouinceput··on The /unblock API from Browserless: dodging bot detection as a service
The never-ending game of walls and ladders
unnouinceput··on Microsoft strikes deal with Mistral in push beyond OpenAI
Good luck with that wish bro. Microsoft is all about money and there is no money in open source for them.
unnouinceput··on Deluge, a portable sequencer, synthesizer and sampler
Not to mention the bad reputation uTorrent gained with embedding ads and malware galore that followed.
unnouinceput··on Building the DirectX shader compiler better than Microsoft?
Quote: "All that was left was that pesky dxil.dll - what sort of magic might Microsoft be employing in that library to “sign shaders”? How can they prevent unsigned shaders from running on Windows machines that aren’t in developer mode? How are they able to distribute that binary on Linux, too? I won’t comment on any of those questions, but will say that you’ll find dxil.dll is NOT a dependency of mach-dxcompiler in any form. You can compile an HLSL shader on a macOS machine using mach-dxcompiler, without the proprietary dxil.dll blob - and end up with a DXIL bytecode file that is byte-for-byte equal to one which runs it on a standard Windows box. Enjoy!"

That above is the real magic. Since he won't comment on the how, I guess he took a swing at poping the hood underneath, and did exactly what Wine developers did 2 decades ago. Any old timers here remembering that scandal? Smart kid to not comment on the how, this way Microsoft won't have any legal leg and since times have changed with all that "Microsoft loves Linux" shit they yell at all corners (not that I believe that for a single second), then it will be swept all under the rug and FOSS wins. For now.

unnouinceput··on Advantages of the Free Pascal Compiler
Quote: "Each unit has it's own identifiers In Pascal you never need to worry about polluting the namespace, like in C where an identifier needs to be unique accross the entire program. No, in Pascal each unit gets it's own namespace and that's very relaxed."

While this is true, you can export the same function/procedure name from 2 different units- and that can bite you in the rear. The way it works is that the last one listed in the "uses" clause ("include" equivalent of Pascal) is the one that has priority. If you want to use the function from the first one you need to actually go use the full identifier of the unit in order to call the first one (unit1name.samefunctionname(blabla parameters). This is notoriously a big bug with 3rd party vendors who want to expand the capability of the general units (looking at you DevExpress) by using the same units name. While I get the over all advantages of doing this on purpose, it also pisses me when I really need the basic one instead of the "enhanced" one.

unnouinceput··on EU chip goal 'unrealistic' says ASML CEO
This can become very realistic by 2025 even. Just poach the brains at ASML, shower them with money (you know those fucking 50 millions bonuses that shitty CEO's enjoy nowadays), give them free hand for all decisions (both tech creativity and management) and voila! - goal achieved. Doubt will happen since this "goal" smells more like another "it's electoral year, let's make some noise in the press" rather than an actual objective.
unnouinceput··on Vistex CEO Sanjay Shah dies on stage after freak accident
no, but a chain's structural integrity is. you know, the lowest bidder and all that stuff
unnouinceput··on Diskprices.com makes $5k/month with affiliate marketing
Exactly my point as well when I went to the site. Fast, click here, uncheck there, kaboom, instant change. No gazillion nested divs, precisely to the point of what it says it does. I guess Peter Voica, the article's author, cannot comprehend pages without having blank spaces at edges.
unnouinceput··on Dave Mills has died
16MB of memory in 1992? Boy oh boy, ain't you the most spoiled kid ever? When I got 4MB in 1994 I though I caught God's foot.
unnouinceput··on How OpenAI is approaching 2024 worldwide elections
I thought as well. I cannot wait for the circus this year, is gonna be glorious. With AIG, writing BS is gonna be so much easier.
unnouinceput··on ChatGPT for Teams
Fine then. You don't want to find out your family the love you have for Roman empire. But you are a programmer, yes? So make an app that's just a wrapper for ChatGPT API's you're paying for and distribute that to your family phones. They'll use your OpenAI API key and each will have their own little ChatGPT 4 to query to. Have fun.
