unnouinceput··on New elliptic curve breaks 18-year-old record
>...but they usually err on the side of presenting results rather than proving or explaining them

And that's exactly what I like about it. They are a news site, hence they present the news. If the news presenters start to chime in you get what you see at CNN / Fox etc, and that's called propaganda, not news. I want news.

unnouinceput··on ChatGPT Search
Before FAANG the acronym was MAFANG, but due to too much closeness to a slang word, the political correct crowd change it to FAANG. Also, just as a side note, Microsoft is a trillion worth more than the "G" in FAANG.
unnouinceput··on ChatGPT Search
And technically Musk was not the wealthiest man in the world when he bought Twitter, because he didn't had that much cash laying around in his bank accounts. And yet, when wanted, or more precisely put in corner to do so, he did shit 50 billions and bought it.

OpenAI is Microsoft, technical details don't matter here, only money.

unnouinceput··on ChatGPT Search
OpenAI is Microsoft. Microsoft is a FAANG giant.
unnouinceput··on Fuzzing between the lines in popular barcode software
"Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning." - Rick Cook
unnouinceput··on Smashing the Limits: Installing Windows XP in DOSBox-X
Nothing. Author wanted to push the limits of unsupported stuff on a ongoing project. Myself I prefer vmware instead of virtualbox and/or qemu. When it comes to virtualization and fast spinning whatever flavor of the month a new OS pops vmware is undisputed king.
unnouinceput··on Smashing the Limits: Installing Windows XP in DOSBox-X (2023)
Clean install failed directly. Without a hiccup at the very first file. Only taking the upgrading route via W2000 it worked.
unnouinceput··on Smashing the Limits: Installing Windows XP in DOSBox-X
No, he was not realizing that. Was wondering if that's the case. The realization comes later with understanding NT vs FAT conversion that was happening. Hence why the upgrade route via W2000
unnouinceput··on New Windows driver signature bypass allows kernel rootkit installs
Which is the wrong path IMO. If users want to shoot themselves in the foot, let them do it. The only way to learn responsibility is to let get their systems pawnd. Maybe they will finally learn the Linux way - never login as admin, always as normal user. You want admin login? Cool, then the "su" equivalent in Windows is called "runas".
unnouinceput··on Embedded Rust in Production?
I would argue that using JSON in embedded, especially on ESP32, is another no-go. I'd wage that using a binary format and later on, after you're out of ESP32, convert it to JSON would be a bigger performance gain than the evangelic tone of this article vis-a-vis of Rust.
unnouinceput··on PeachPie Compiler: Compile and run PHP on top of .NET runtime
For obfuscation reasons mainly. Hide your genius code from a php base so your IP is not poached/discovered by Amazon and the likes who love to get brilliant open source made project, move a line and call it their own.
unnouinceput··on Cooking items in your home are linked to cancer-causing chemicals
I guess you don't have uBlock Origin
unnouinceput··on Cooking items in your home are linked to cancer-causing chemicals
what ads? I don't see a single ad there. Are you using chrome by any chance? Cause I use Firefox with uBlock Origin and had no problem browsing the site without seeing a single ad.
unnouinceput··on Do All Problems Have Technical Fixes?
Problems in this world are of 2 types. Technical and political.

Do all "technical" problems have technical fixes. A very sound YES!

What about political problems? Sometime they can be fixed with a technical fix but ALL of them can be fixed with assassination.

unnouinceput··on TSMC execs allegedly dismissed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman as 'podcasting bro'
I remember the story about Larry and Sergei pitching their new search engine to investors: "Will make 10B annually in maximum 10 years". Nowadays 10B is the paper clips fund at Alphabet.
unnouinceput··on Over 300 New 'Nazca Lines' Geoglyphs Have Been Revealed by AI
Correct, you already half name it. I'd call it image processing with pattern recognition
unnouinceput··on OpenAI to become for-profit company
That's a lot of words for Micro$oft to say they just love money. Who knew!
unnouinceput··on Stonebraker Seeks to Invert the Computing Paradigm with DBOS
Java was in 1st iteration and was replaced by Typescript
unnouinceput··on Zero to Sixty Thousand Eight Hundred and Ninety
It's an ad for the product, not a normal tech blog. It should not be on front page of HN.

@dang - ??

unnouinceput··on Elon Musk was just forced to reveal who owns X. Here's the list
Any % each of those owners actually own? For me that would be the most important aspect of ownership
unnouinceput··on Show HN: 1-FPS encrypted screen sharing for introverts
I used jitsi for a long time. Then they started throttling and then they demanded user registration. I ditched them at that point and started using this. What you say it's maybe true, didn't checked, but for above reasons I gave up on them. Each to their own I suppose
unnouinceput··on Show HN: 1-FPS encrypted screen sharing for introverts
I prefer https://talk.brave.com/ over jitsi. Same idea but I find it better than jitsi
unnouinceput··on SAM 2: Segment Anything in Images and Videos
Trying to run https://sam2.metademolab.com/demo and...

Quote: "Sorry Firefox users! The Firefox browser doesn’t support the video features we’ll need to run this demo. Please try again using Chrome or Safari."

Wtf is this shit? Seriously!

unnouinceput··on Defeated by A.I., A Legend in the Board Game Go Warns: Get Ready for What's Next
Quote: “People used to be in awe of creativity, originality and innovation,” he said. “But since A.I. came, a lot of that has disappeared.”

No, it hasn't. If anything AI, as it currently stands, made sure that the "bottom creativity" is gone. For example I am simply anti-talent at drawing. For me a street artist that does caricatures is creativity. Looking closer you see that the artist is actually very limited in his techniques and uses but just a few easy tricks - this was explained to me by a friend who's an artist, a true one, with shows and galleries. So now AI made sure "that!" creativity was erased and is at fingertips for everybody. I see that as a good sign, not a bad one. True creativity is still the panache of humans - I mean AI can create masterpieces like GRR Martin? (if only the old sob would move his rear to finish them, that's it).

unnouinceput··on Sending emails to my three-year-old
Which can in turn be automatically parsed and pull the data into said document. So when Google decides that the mail/workspace account is banned for whatever reason they deem, you don't lose the content, you just change the automation tool to the new e-mail address (and inform relatives about the new e-mail as well).
unnouinceput··on New theory suggests time is an illusion created by quantum entanglement
Getting old and dying seems like a very real causality to me. Let me know when you'll be able to overcome that, I'd love to perform that trick.
unnouinceput··on DuckDB Doesn't Need Data to Be a Database
Quote: "How do you share that dataset with an analyst?"

..and blah blah about the sharing from a developer perspective.

In reality the analyst is some higher up that only knows how to import/view CSV in Excel so that's exactly what will ask for ("hey zzz can you send me those daily parcels in a .csv file? thank you")

unnouinceput··on After 6 years, I'm over GraphQL
I worked with CORBA during 90's and early 2000's. A truly shitty piece of technology that I do not wish upon my worst enemies, except maybe the higher ups at Microsoft who invented COM interfaces. When I saw the hype of GraphQL in 2017 I looked into it and while exploring it I started to have PTSD from CORBA days. "So you're the new CORBA, huh? I'll fuck off as far away as I can from you then" - and told the same to every client that even mention it.
unnouinceput··on Don't DRY Your Code Prematurely
Maintenance is 90% of a project life time. Sometime those "best practices" rigid implemented means the project won't live to see even it's 1st birthday.
unnouinceput··on 'Operation Endgame' Hits Malware Delivery Platforms
4 people and 100 servers? that's all? that's a drop in a bucket, won't event make a dent in the black market of ransomware.
