unified101··on In September, AI generated code has made up 17.25% of all Linux Kernel patches
My follow up would be - how many are unemployed vs employed. From what I do know, most linux devs also work someplace, so either directly or indirectly have the means for a 20-100 dollar subscription a month.

More than that, I've not seen people do agentic coding in one part of their work, and manual coding in another. Is there any first hand account of someone doing this? It kind of rewires your brain, and makes it hard to do both at the same time.

unified101··on In September, AI generated code has made up 17.25% of all Linux Kernel patches
Seems low. 80% people are manually typing in things? In my circle it's close to 0% code written manually.

Do linux devs live in a completely different microcosm?

unified101··on KDE turns 30 and someone's brought an AI-native desktop proposal
News piece with unnecessary annoying editorializing.

I think the idea of plasma widgets and rails fully being customized per user giving them material control on ones desktop is a good idea.

We need good ideas to counter and take on the omarchy nonsense.

unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
I apologize to GPerson for needlessly trying to convince him to my point of view. He seems to be an smart person deeply affected by how LLM are affecting his vocation and work. It was wrong of me to do this and I will take a break from this website for one week.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
It will. you lack imagination, and have a unnecessary high opinion of yourself.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
I cheer for a path that opens up the future wider for knowledge.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
This job based pursuite of knowledge is impure. Drop it.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
It will. you just lack imagination.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
The direction of continue shotting will develop a new culture that lead to a much more wider understanding for humans in the field of math. Find a way to accept this new culture and you'll thrive.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
Jobs will come and go. I'ts their nature. What makes you treat job over pursuit of knowledge. It is lowly and unbecoming.
unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
What's this obsession with credit. From elsewhere in the thread:

> people spending their lives trying to promote humanity

What does this even mean? Become a monk? They are credited with helping humanity.

unified101··on I vibed a proof of Conway's conjecture
WTF? Have some humility towards someone who took the time to talk about their work. And made intellectual progress.

Air your LLM greviences someplace else.

unified101··on Why I didn’t sign the Fields medallists’ letter
Knowledge wants to be free.
unified101··on Fed hikes rates as inflation worries push up bond yields
I personally don't think there's a correct concept of money. Money describes how happy I feel, and the correct money I should have is whatever describes my current mood.

So what can we collective do with money so I feel most happy. This may be the most important question of all to ask.

unified101··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
Sadly, you will have to choose another profession, and as your example shows, the better paying ones need 10 years of gruntwork to get there.
unified101··on Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs
I'm curious - how do you explain the fact that as you look all around you, lesser number of devs are having fun?
unified101··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
That's like saying don't agent your mom and dad. is anyone? A reprot for your boss? or code? we're past that.
unified101··on Splash-free urinals: Design through physics and differential equations
For those looking: Fig 4a, the right 2 designs are the winner. https://academic.oup.com/view-large/figure/512223725/pgaf087...

I do recall there was another story of putting a "target" at the right place in existing urinals significantly improved cleanliness

unified101··on Suchir Balaji's Homepage
I don't get this. There's one post.

Are we saying AI is not fair use and let's save copyright from it's ongoing trivialization? I vote no.

unified101··on AI is breaking our proxies for expertise
Serious question - what's so special about personal merit anyway? In hunter gatherers it was might, in current age it's brain, but either are equally arbitrary.

I prefer a world that's equalocracy, with a focus on specific personal-freedoms (live and let live principle).

unified101··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
So is walmart. If you can understand that system, the answer to your question is revealed.
unified101··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
I don't think you'll find this community welcoming the idea of lower pay (and hence a more volatile employment).

Overall if in the next 12 months I fully expect compensation on average to be down 30-50%. It's impossible for it not to, given the sudden exodus of talent from US to open up remote consultancies that can offer same skill at 1/4th the price.

unified101··on A list of 1,325 AI assisted repositories, mined from GitHub
Only python?
unified101··on New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore
I think this will go hand in hand with tech compensation and jobs falling off a cliff. In the AI world too, we can't have our cake and eat it.
unified101··on Ask HN: How is AI actively a threat to humanity if it's only online?

Your water supply is administered online.
Your land records, taxes, revenue are online.
  Stock market is online.
  Power systems are online.
Nuclear power reactors are (kind of) online.
Money to bribe people to do work is online.
There's a lot of havoc that is potentially possible online.
unified101··on Ask HN: Career paths to consider if I am better at supporting than creating?
I'll be blunt rather than couch it: all the things you've listed will make you a ralph loop target in the org. You are adding human in the loop where the industry is moving in the opposite direction.

This is generally true across all roles, but first impact will be working that is more trivial for an agent or n8n flow.

So consider this and pick roles wisely, where you can see this existing for a bit. All the best.

unified101··on Feeling Sad about AI
The loss of identity is quite destabilizing, and our industry is not doing enough to address it. For example, one thing we could do is move identity to value to the user, in a structured way. It is possible, but hardly any team is thinking about it.
unified101··on Resist "AI"
I'm all ears for a solution. But all I hear is some workers want to bar other workers (H1B, seniority, etc) from working. I hear nothing about organizing.

Class warfare is nice to write about, but there's been 0 credible approaches in the last 2 years proposed. Do you think it will magically appear sometime? Are we generally prepared to stand with our less experienced colleagues? and immigrants?

unified101··on Resist "AI"
Work competitor is also your colleague.
unified101··on Resist "AI"
The important question is: Will my work competitor also resist AI? We have no way to organize this, and hence, as they say, "resistance is futile".
