unicornporn··on Introducing Windows 11
So, yet another level of UI inconsistencies[1].

unicornporn··on Tim Cook called Pelosi to warn her against disrupting the iPhone with antitrust
Are you being sarcastic?
unicornporn··on Brave Search beta
Or you could just use https://startpage.com/ and get Google quality results 100% of the time.
unicornporn··on Brave Search beta
> I mean, DDG worked fine for 95% of time, but the remaining 5% failure often led to some extreme frustration that I just couldn't stand.

So, just use https://startpage.com/ and get proxied Google results. Searx is another alternative.

unicornporn··on The 88x31 GIF Collection
Deviantart? Seems you're in the wrong millennium? Deviantart started in 2000 and at that time I fondly remember us making fun of 90s web design by creating mock sites with 88x31 graphics. In -97 I remember it being all the rage though. :) Three, four or five years may not sound like a lot of time, but the web was changing at a pretty rapid pace back then.
unicornporn··on The 88x31 GIF Collection
I'm sincerely hoping that was a sarcastic comment.

Some people still do this. http://john.ankarstrom.se/html/
unicornporn··on The European Union officially bans its airspace to Belarusian companies
It's Hacker News after all. :)
unicornporn··on Xiaomi says it can now fully charge a phone in eight minutes at 200W
Not necessarily. Smartphones have reached a level of performance and maturity that I could easily use one for 7 years if it wasn't for the planned obsolescence. But, somehow security updates stop arriving (even for Lineage). My next handset will be a Fairphone. At least they seem to be doing what they can to keep their devices running [1].

Apple is doing better. My SO has had their iPhone SE for 5 years now and updates keep coming.

unicornporn··on One man’s fight for the right to repair broken MacBooks
> In incognito, I get nothing similar to what I would actually watch. Nothing is even remotely similar. It's scarily different, and none of it interests me.

Same here. 100% generic clickbait crap and exactly the same stuff that shows in a Ungoogled Chromium incognito window. I hardly ever use Chromium.

I use Cookie AutoDelete, uBlock Origin, Decentraleyes and a VPN for casual surfing though.

unicornporn··on Solved by 1440p HiDPI: MacBook Pro 16“ is hot and noisy with an external monitor
uMatrix has been discontinued. The repository has been archived.

It was great but it was also a dread, even after training it. If you visit mostly the same sites I guess it's fine.

unicornporn··on UltraEdit Text Editor
Apparently :)
unicornporn··on Show HN: I wrote a free Mac app to OCR any text on screen
Here's another one: https://screenotate.com/
unicornporn··on UltraEdit Text Editor
TBH, I first struggled to see if this was a mock website.

Film festival laurels galore, the world's best text editor, best results, best support, best usability. I mean, how best can a text editor be?

unicornporn··on Show HN: Vandal – an alternate navigator to Wayback Machine
I'm mostly fine with those permissions as long as it's a recommended extension[1]. Otherwise: no, never. Bait and switch is real.

unicornporn··on HTML Notepad – HTML WYSIWYG editor
> alt-arrow to go back a word, alt+shift+arrow to select a word, etc. These don't work, and I'm too used to them to stop using.

Will sadly make it unusable for me. Thanks for saving me the time.

unicornporn··on Framework Laptop – pre-orders are now open
Do they have plans to extend business to the EU? Buying one from here is not feasible considering toll fees, VAT additions and all that.
unicornporn··on Why should I put my website to sleep?
And here's my most awesome example: https://gossips.cafe/

(Click/tap the cup in the lower right corner if you visit outside opening hours) :-)

unicornporn··on Open-source audio fans up in arms after Audacity opts to add telemetry capture
It's particularly insensitive to opt for GA for telemetry at this early stage since it's so controversial in open-source. People are rightfully concerned.
unicornporn··on WinBox: Window manager in a web browser
Are you suggesting that only positive critique should be allowed? If I was the developer I'd love to hear that user's honest take on my creation rather than the "oh, cool!" type of input.
unicornporn··on Audacity Aquired by Muse Group
Tantacrul is hiring. That's a pretty clear indication they will attempt to monetize.
unicornporn··on Opera adds native support for blockchain domain names
Shouldn't a company in a country with these[1] practices rightfully be met with distrust in these contexts? Spoiler alert: I'm not a culture (or politics) relativist.

unicornporn··on GB Studio: A game maker for the Game Boy
Game Boy and NES were my first consoles, but being an avid retro gamer in these days (hail RetroPie!) I must admit SNES and Genesis is as far back as I'm willing to go.

The 16-bit era is when consoles got really good and there are too many games from this period I'm still discovering. I could only dream about a tool like this for SNES games.

There's a lovely scene still making awesome games and cartridges for Genesis (with old tools I guess). Check out Xeno Crisis and Tanglewood.

unicornporn··on My Current HTML Boilerplate
Hugo has no dependency (or rather they'd baked into the single binary), it's just a binary and even runs on my shared hosting. It's the only reason I switched from Jekyll. I had so much trouble with Jekyll breaking it was unbearable. Zola is another option.
unicornporn··on macOS gatekeeper and file quarantine bypass
What would I need to get it down to a Mojave level of inconvenience?
unicornporn··on Do you hate the Google's Chrome shortened address bar?
What exactly are you missing? I think I'm doing what you're describing using FF.

unicornporn··on Do you hate the Google's Chrome shortened address bar?
I love that the grand masters of surveillance capitalism is messing up their browser. At this point I don't understand why any geek with some pride would chose Chrome over Firefox.
unicornporn··on PSPad: A freeware programmer's editor for Windows

Just a heads-up. Found that a while ago and much prefer it over wallabag.
