uncharted9··on LineageOS is currently installed on 1.5M Android devices
I agree regarding Xiaomi. But they are quite cheap devices. Like $300 can get you a pretty decent phone. It's just a 7 day waiting time period and you need a Xiaomi account logged in on the phone for those 7 days. I won't say it's the end of the world.

Although I never had enough money as a student to get Pixel devices, I made sure to get devices with an unlockable bootloader. Xiaomi devices have been quite a good choice if you're in the market for cheaper devices with an unlockable bootloader. I cycled through Lineage OS, Pixel Experience, and Project Elixir, and I am currently using CrDroid on my 2019 phone. Still works like charm. I'm surprised at how bloatware-free the devices can be. Just flash core Gapps to get the bare minimum of Google Play Services working for apps that need GPS and push notifications. The battery backup has also been quite amazing as compared to the default MiUI ROM.

I do sympathize with other posters with their experience of Safety Net and Device Integrity checks forcing them to not use banking and payments apps, but going through XDA or Telegram clears up this confusion of which ROM passes these checks OOB without any fiddling.

I've decided that I won't play this custom ROM security nightmare game anymore and will get any Pixel device with GrapheneOS in the future. Often, it's just one guy developing each ROM for each device.

uncharted9··on Ask HN: Best basic to advanced Physics book(s)?
I have had this on my bookmark for a very long time. I didn't pursue physics as an undergrad but had a few of the books for my physics and chemistry courses. I can definitely recommend this guide. Perhaps I will follow this guide and pursue studying physics just as a hobby someday.

uncharted9··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Learning about my own mind and how to tame it.

I've started realizing that I don't have much control over the external world, people or events, and only my perception of it can keep me sane or fix my mental issues.

This has effectively forced me to see my relationship with my devices with more scrutiny. I've repeatedly found that digital consumption, whether it is infotainment, knowledge, or mindless Reels or Shorts, has always led me to a more depressed and sad state.

A recent trip in the mountains without any cell reception even further confirmed this hypothesis for me personally.

I try to leave my devices and social media for longer durations, but the eventual FOMO and withdrawals that kick in always bring me back to square one of agony.

Events around a romantic interest recently also made me to rethink on how to effectively control emotions and feelings. The other person can do nothing wrong, but my mind can still feel tormented by their simple actions and events that unfold.

Unless I can achieve some sort of mental and emotional equanimity, I feel all my pursuits of learning and career would still not alleviate me from this joyless state of life.

uncharted9··on Microsoft has not stopped forcing Edge on Windows 11 users
You can use Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility: https://github.com/ChrisTitusTech/winutil

The Tweaks section has a checkbox for removing Edge. I removed mine using that.

uncharted9··on This is valid Python syntax
For me, one of chatGPT's most frequent uses is to convert all of these one-liner statements into logical multi-line code that my feeble brain can process.
uncharted9··on Microsoft Teams: Advantages of the new architecture
These modifications appear to be excellent ones. The entire Office 365 gimmick is very popular at my company. I suppose it would really free a lot of people from the awful Microsoft Experience they are currently experiencing.
uncharted9··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
I've tried getting LTSC copies but they seem to be very difficult to source.
uncharted9··on Ask HN: OneNote Alternative?
For free-form writing and mockups, I extensively use Excalidraw. It isn't feature rich like One Note but works great for me as an infinite blackboard.
uncharted9··on Ask HN: Anyone who learned to code for the first time after 2020?
I didn't know UCB had such good courses available entirely for free, including videos.

Do you have any course suggestions for studying Operating Systems, Databases, and Computer Networking?

Also, I wanted to ask if it's worth self-studying the entire (most of it) CS undergraduate curriculum or if it makes more sense to invest in learning development tools and frameworks, get a job ASAP, and learn this theory on the go.

uncharted9··on Design the next iPhone
I was trying hard to search ways to share the video and found out that the "Download video" button is only visible in Chrome or Safari and not Firefox. I love everything about Neal's site but I wish supporting the three major web browser engines shouldn't be the big deal. I've seen the writing on the wall now and I should probably jump ships off FF to anything based on chromium.
