umsm··on Flippant.js - A mini JS and CSS library for flipping things over
Why spend time re-inventing the wheel? If you're looking to sharpen your skills, then go for it. I believe most people would prefer to get their product out the door as quickly as it's reasonable.
umsm··on PRISM fears give private search engine DuckDuckGo its best week ever
Just because they say they don't collect your info, it doesn't mean that google doesn't get it.

Look at the source of a search page and you'll notice that they include scripts directly from google.com...

umsm··on Breaker 101: An intensive online web security course
Will the videos be recorded and published? I am currently employed full-time and I will find it very difficult to be online for a live video...
umsm··on The 800 Pound Gorilla Amazon Tried to Kill is Google's Trojan Horse
I don't think that the author is really comparing apples to apples. The products are different and the prices are different.

That being said, most of the time when comparing amazon to local retailers, I notice the price is almost identical, except for tax.

umsm··on “Accounts merged and now my files are gone”
My biggest concern is not that they will get your email credentials, but the fact that they may have your email and a password to start tinkering with on banking sites, social media, etc.
umsm··on Real-time metric counter using Soviet-era Nixie tubes
This story made me want a nixie watch: http://www.cathodecorner.com/nixiewatch/watchmovie.html
umsm··on My Latte is Worth It - No Fun Allowed
One thing I wanted to point out: There is a difference between food and a service. People are willing to spend more on food than on any service or product if you think about it long term.

When looking at my finances, food is always #2 every month right after housing.

umsm··on Amazon's short URL: http://a.co
What do people use short URLs for nowadays? I used to run one that was "dynamnic" in the sense that you had a number of services that it could resolve and specific data you would send the services. But it never gained traction.

/g/search+query /bing/search+query /amazon/product+search /g.images/image+search etc.

umsm··on Amazon's short URL: http://a.co
His moniker says it all... :) hehe
umsm··on Freight Farms fundraising on Wefunder: Farm in a box
Just a technical note: The last image mentions "iPad" when it's clearly an HP :)
umsm··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
Wow! I never thought about looking at how much I've spent on fuel over a long period of time. The problem for me is that we have multiple cars.

I currently drive until the red light comes on, fill up, and look at the trip counter to see how many miles I've driven since my last fill-up. I then reset the trip counter and repeat. My time is spent in mixed highway and city traffic.

I'll have to look at modern hybrids once something actually breaks on my car. I'll consider everything equally once it's time to shop again.

umsm··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
If your numbers are based on the on-board computer, they're wrong. The computer usually states something higher than what you actually get. Even the MPH is a lie, as the speedometer is set to be higher by 3-9 MPH.

In the real world, I haven't seen hybrid drivers that actually get what's advertised. I don't know how much this has changed within the last 3 years...

umsm··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
I'm curious, how do gas hybrids have an edge?

If you consider reliability, a diesel has no "technology", so there are fewer things to go wrong.

The issue of emissions has been addressed with BlueTec. No?

umsm··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
I wasn't comparing a normal car to this, as this is an edge case.

I am talking about the choices we make when purchasing a car. Almost everyone that I spoke to that has a hybrid doesn't consider it worth the money. These manufacturers advertise "38MPG highway" as being something incredible while a ten year old technology can achieve something better.

The problem is that gas prices are stable (controlled?) in the US so that inefficient cars are the norm.

umsm··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
I drive a diesel, and I love it. I'm so surprised that all of these hybrids are "revolutionary" yet they offer almost no improvement over something similar with a diesel engine.

My 1.9L diesel engine gets 40+ MPG everyday for the past few years. I'm excited by what Mercedes is doing with their GLK250... a 2.1L diesel in the GLK is almost perfect for that car.

umsm··on Kim Dotcom to Google, Twitter, Facebook: I Own Security Patent, Work With Me
That doesn't mean it's illegal. He's just trying to right a wrong.
umsm··on The Elves Leave Middle Earth – Sodas Are No Longer Free (2009)
I am curious about how much a coffee machine really costs. I don't think it can be that much to merit getting rid of it. People that try to save a few pennies usually waste much more elsewhere...
umsm··on Leaving Google’s silo: Alternatives to Gmail, Talk, Calendar, and more
Agreed! And I actually have an idea on how this can be done, but no time to implement it...
umsm··on $100 Invested in 100 $1 Lottery Tickets
That's not true. Investments can fail.
umsm··on Hacker serving 5-year sentence invents ATM add-on to prevent theft
But, think about if a criminal duplicates the design and screws it to the front of existing / old machines? Most users will think that it's not a skimmer but the "secure" device.

Also: Place the skimmer to the LEFT most portion of the horizontal hole. The card is the rotated and pushed past the skimmer as it's inserted into the machine :)

umsm··on Hacker serving 5-year sentence invents ATM add-on to prevent theft
I don't know if the design is effective... what prevents anyone from installing a skimmer on/within this device?
umsm··on Kim Dotcom Granted New Zealand Supreme Court Appeal Over U.S. Evidence
Not at all. When this story first made headlines, I thought: Why did the NZ government allow the US to do this on their land in the first place? I just noticed that in the states, sometimes you don't necessarily get treated fairly in edge cases until you make a lot of noise (blogs, videos, etc.).

Of course, IANAL and I have no idea how the legal system works...

umsm··on Ask HN: I'm lost. Please help
Agreed 100%! Leave ASAP because your time is valuable and you need to make the most of the limited time you have :)
umsm··on Kim Dotcom Granted New Zealand Supreme Court Appeal Over U.S. Evidence
I'm sure the New Zealand Supreme Court is awesome, but I wonder how much traction this would've gotten if it was not publicized all around the world...
umsm··on Not Having A Real Job

umsm··on Newegg nukes "corporate troll" Alcatel in third patent appeal win this year
I dont, as I've had a bad customer service experience with Newegg. But it was only once, and they did budge once I contacted google "trusted" stores team.
umsm··on Google Compute Engine available for everyone, App Engine adds PHP
Most of the arguments are biased opinions and can't really be defended. But... if you don't like wordpress, why not assess projects such as Symfony2 or Drupal?
umsm··on Google Compute Engine available for everyone, App Engine adds PHP
> For pedantic hackers like us, sure, it's garbage, but for the average person that just wants to get things done, it is pure gold.

I disagree. The developers of Wordpress are not "the average person". There are too many production sites that run on PHP to say it's garbage.

umsm··on How I 'stole' $14 million from a bank: A security tester's tale
Adding another system to the mix is just another system that can be vulnerable to an attack. Once someone is in and they understand how everything works, there is no stopping them.
