umeshunni··on Gemini "duck" demo was not done in realtime or with voice
How was that fake?
umeshunni··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
It's not a puppet - they are officially part owned (3-4%) by the Universal Music Group. Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group have sold some and all of their shares in Spotify, respectively
umeshunni··on Spotify will reduce total headcount by approximately 17%
TBH - this is the first time I've heard of Deezer and looking at their website - they seem to have ripped off every feature that Spotify has, including the end of year 'wrapped'.

Sorry, I meant that UPI is running at a loss and is subsidized.

https://bfsi.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/fintech/upi-t...

The government gives Rs 1,300 crore as subsidy

Unsurprisingly, there is now a 1.1% interchange on some UPI transactions now: https://www.onmanorama.com/news/business/2023/03/31/upi-tran...

Separately, NCPI's revenues are USD ~2B/year: https://www.icra.in/Rationale/ShowRationaleReport/?Id=122149....

NPCI is state funded and runs at a loss. i.e. your taxes are paying for it.
umeshunni··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
It's a new and "more experienced" board. This is also possibly the first of additional governance and structure changes.

That's not how inflation works.
umeshunni··on Argentina elects 'shock therapy' libertarian Javier Milei as president
I think he's talking about two different countries he's lived in. My guess is an Eastern European country in the 90s and Turkey in the 2000s.
umeshunni··on Google pays Apple 36% of the revenue it earns from searches in Safari
Does anyone who if they minutes from the trial are publicly posted anywhere?

Someone had posted this link earlier: https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/18552824/772/1/united-s...

but it doesn't have minutes.

umeshunni··on Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says
Yeah, I'm sure there are a ton of programmers over 50.
umeshunni··on Apple discriminated against US citizens in hiring, DOJ says
They're going after both companies for discrimination on the basis of national origin.
umeshunni··on Humane AI Pin
I disagree. Smartphones are very entrenched and a personal fashion statement in some ways. It's near impossible to get even a basis point marketshare in the global smartphone market. A wearable form factor is the right approach, though a pin feels like a weird choice - as opposed to a watch, earbuds, glasses etc.

OpenAI and Jony Ive in talks to raise $1bn from SoftBank for AI device venture

ChatGPT creator in early discussions to create the ‘iPhone of artificial intelligence’

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief, has tapped Ive’s company LoveFrom, which the designer founded when he left Apple in 2019, to develop the ChatGPT creator’s first consumer device, according to three people familiar with the plan.

umeshunni··on U.S. net saving as a percentage of gross national income
1. Business Insider is a clickbait publication. You should probably find a better source for any information.

2. Savings rate is a point in time metrics -- d/dt if you wish. A safety net would be the 'area under the curve'.

3. The savings rate is dropping because of increased unemployment and increasing inflation.

umeshunni··on Microsoft is retiring Visual Studio for Mac in 2024
The crazy thing is that - I worked on VS 10 years before you did - and it was at a (near) billion $ ARR back then. So, it looks like it has been a flat business for a long time.

umeshunni··on California slams San Francisco for 'egregious' barriers to housing construction
The Sunset, Richmond district etc are just miles and miles of low rise apartments and single family homes. Imagine building 40 story towers in those neighborhoods.

umeshunni··on California slams San Francisco for 'egregious' barriers to housing construction
Being San Francisco, they'll just create some more taxes and then virtue signal for some unrelated cause halfway around the world.
umeshunni··on California slams San Francisco for 'egregious' barriers to housing construction
How does taxing existing housing magically create new houses to solve the housing crisis?
umeshunni··on NASA just sent a software update to a spacecraft 12B miles away
If that were true, we would be seeing far more entrepreneurship from countries with Universal healthcare (most of EU) or UBI (most gulf countries).

umeshunni··on Trucking startup Convoy closes operations with no buyer
what's an NOL?
umeshunni··on Trucking startup Convoy closes operations with no buyer
Most of the reason is that asset prices (and thus wealth has shrunk), inflation is higher, so people are buying less and there's no Fed dropping money from helicopters.
umeshunni··on Trucking startup Convoy closes operations with no buyer
What does Jeff Bezos have to do with Convoy?
umeshunni··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
I got the Philips open side headphones he recommended in his blog post and they have worked well for me. The only downside is they are gigantic and people also comment on my head size to headphone size ratio.
umeshunni··on Meta Plans to Grow Threads by Ramming Its Posts to Facebook
Because she has nothing better to do given what a failure all her misadventures have been.
umeshunni··on Meta is banning people from advertising after running ads for Python and Pandas
