ultrablue··on Ask HN: Coping with Loneliness
I've been dealing with just this issue. I, too, am an introvert and require time alone after socializing to 'recharge.' I had a fairly intense bout of depression recently, I realized that it was in part due to do loneliness. So I did some introspection and talked things over with a trusted advisor.

So some things to consider in no particular order:

Shame about being lonely drives people to feel more lonely. Don't let that trap engulf you.

Take steps to explore your psyche and see if the roots of your loneliness are based in issues like self-esteem. Don't take this lightly. It's easy to dismiss, but if those forces are present in your life, they'll be very difficult to see clearly.

Are you religious? Go to church (or sangha or whatever). Got an addiction? Go to a 12 step group meeting. Like board games? Find folks that like to play and hang out with them. Seek out opportunities to interact with people preferably in the flesh, but online can work too.

Get a therapist. Or a spiritual guide. Whatever, as long as they understand how the human psyche works, and that you're there to work. If that suits you.

Don't underestimate loneliness. There's a reason why our most feared punishment is isolating people. Because it's terrible.

Learn to relish solitude. Don't let an idea about solitude trick you into thinking that being alone is good.

Humans are social animals. Not being part of the herd represents an existential threat to us. This is a major cause of suffering in our species.

Best of luck.

ultrablue··on Ask HN: How should I measure a goal to “Master JavaScript”?
What about the number of projects, libraries, frameworks, etc, you contribute to? Being a committer on some projects requires mastery. Or bug hunts? Or projects that are looking for specific features. For example: https://duckduckhack.com/issues
ultrablue··on Why would aliens even bother with Earth?
Setting aside vixen99's completely cogent response for a moment, what about curiosity?

Despite the plethora of planets we've discovered recently, I'm betting that sentient life is pretty rare. In human terms, you could ask "Why would people even bother with hydrothermal vents?"

ultrablue··on Ask HN: Domain name purchase: godaddy vs. route53?
I know you didn't supply it as an option, but I've found google domains to be really good. I moved off of GodAddy to them last year. Reasonably priced, easy to use and fast.

Oops I didn't realize I posted this twice. Well, I thought the first attempt didn't make it. Sorry about that. Still learning. Always learning. Is there an end to learning?

Lovely. Framing a first amendment issue as a public health issue and getting public funding for it. Priceless.
ultrablue··on Ask HN: I'm depressed, what should I do?
Wow, all those rejections sound painful. I'm sorry.

So a few things: First, feeling down, rejected, etc., sound pretty normal to me given what you've described. That's not to say that I think that you should simply ride it out, suck it up, etc. If it was that easy there would be a lot less suffering in general. You're clearly cognizant that something's not right, though, and the fact that you're acting on that seems pretty healthy to me.

Try reddit. I can't suggest any specific subs, but I've found the communities that are supportive to be very supportive. If you're struggling with simply reaching out, that's one place I would start.

Yes, please do consider a therapist (or a career coach, etc.). The thing with depression is that it horribly distorts your perspective, and as you've touched on, begins a wicked feedback loop. It can be difficult to dig yourself out of that hole, and digging in can have serious consequences. Getting in touch with someone who can provide accurate information and context about your experience, and how you want to sort things out.

Sunshine and physical activity, as well as getting out in public are excellent moderators of depression. But they're not fixes.

Finally, if you take only one thing from this, I hope it's this: There's nothing wrong with feeling the way you do. There's nothing wrong with seeking out expert opinion on how to manage your life. Depression is manageable, especially episodic depression, such as you describe. Please please don't let yourself fall into the trap of thinking that it's a weakness or a character defect.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck on your journey. Hang in there.

ultrablue··on Ask HN: What to factors keep in mind while choosing domain registrar?
[Editing for formatting.]

Ease of use.

Amount of up-selling you'll have to deal with.

ultrablue··on I'm about to be the last one on a sinking ship. Advice?
I've been in a similar situation. I bailed immediately, but I had a fairly nice severance package to cushion the transition. If I hadn't had that, I would have started looking for a new position while I was in the old one. You're chances of getting a job are better of you're already employed (they say).

In addition, it sounds like you're young. Skinning your knees is part of cutting your teeth (ouch sorry mixed metaphors), and I would say it's much better to do that sort of hill-climbing (job-seeking) when you're young.

As trite as it sounds, it's true: doors open when others close, and everything has an opportunity within it. Enjoy the ride, it's all part of the adventure!

I wish you the best possible outcomes.

Genius!
ultrablue··on Ask HN: How are you taking notes
I like mindmapping because it helps me to remember relationships between ideas. But I don't always use it.

I use a red pen to mark things: A star for action items. More stars = more urgent. A ! for points of interest, important facts. A ? for questions.

As I go over my notes, I cross out the stars, !s and ?s as I address them. That way I'm not confused later.

I do the marking regardless of whether I mindmap. One thing about mindmaps is that they take up a lot of paper real estate, and 8.5x11 quickly gets used up. So it depends on the nature of session.
