ukraineally··on Putin puts Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on alert
>Satellites with high powered lasers are a fantasy that don't exist right now.

You need approximately a 5KW laser to do the job. Virtually all satellites have this much power available.

So this 'fantasy' is that you don't believe these sattelites are in orbit? It's quite obvious that this wouldn't be public knowledge. I admit I have no idea.

>The converted Boeing 747 airborne laser was a colossal failure and would have only been able to target a missile nearby in its boost/launch phase. It's now dismantled.

So to be clear, an ICBM flies at like mach 15-30. So it quickly leaves range of the 747. It was indeed scrapped, but was it? Did missile defence agency in around 2009 just decide they don't know what to do and havent done anything since?

They received 9 billion $ in 2021 and this sentence is literally all we know: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Futures_Com...

Is it simply top secret or did they utterly fail in their job?

>You think you can send fighters to gun down an icbm MIRV in its re-entry phase? Seriously?

If all you have is that, like canada, then that's what you have to do. It doesn't matter how probable the success is.

ukraineally··on Putin puts Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on alert
>There are more options available to US than just "fire all the missiles".

I mean any launch by Russia will be declaration of war on everyone.

I don't know the effectiveness of stopping these nukes with missile defense. I suspect the USA has multiple plans that they expect to be effective.

ukraineally··on Putin puts Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on alert
>Time to ask HN: how do you want to spend the last days of your life?

Plan is to paint my hallway and staircase today. Family is coming over.

ukraineally··on Putin puts Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on alert
>Playing armchair general here, but I wonder what's the playbook if Russia decides to conduct a nuclear weapon "experiment".

Any launch regardless of trajectory will be considered act of war against the world. There will be no warning shots here.

ukraineally··on Putin puts Russia’s nuclear deterrent forces on alert
The days of mutually assured destruction is actually over. In the time needed for the ICBMs to reach targets on another continent is enough time to intercept those missiles. Obviously neighbours like Finland and Ukraine on the otherhand are problematic. I hope the best for them.

Many missile defense systems have been worked on, sattelites with high powered lasers, planes with high powered lasers, intercepting missiles like Israel's irondome, phalanx anti missile systems, and many others. No idea how effective but we shall see if we need them.

Canada is probably kicking itself pretty hardcore for not accepting the USA's offer to join missile defense. You can read how dumb we are here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Missile_Defence_in_Ca... lol or not.. Cold Lake Alberta is probably pretty quiet right now.

My city is tiny and probably not a target. If Toronto is hit, I'm jumping in my car and driving to help anyway I can. I recommend we all do the same, a pair of hands is enough to help.

To be clear, this denazification stuff is russian propaganda.

>Also perhaps noteworthy is that the Proud Boys in Australia

To be extra clear, the 'everyone is nazis' stuff really falls apart when the supposed nazis are not possibly nazis. Ukraine's president is Jewish...

For example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enrique_Tarrio

That's the leader of the proud boys. He's very obviously not a nazi.

Feel free to disagree with their politics but there's absolutely not a shred of evidence this guy who isn't white is a nazi.

You did confirm something with me today. Australia's media has been infiltrated by Russian spies.

I must admit, I'm not really familiar with Australia's media besides this guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlIrI80og8c

So what media do you follow that makes you think everyone is a nazi?

ukraineally··on Russia gives Ukraine deadline for decision on talks in Belarus
>LOL. What has "long history" got to do with what the CCP is doing now?

What have they done exactly? Specifics please?

The obvious reality that Russian spies have infiltrated Canadian media makes me question this 'China is about to invade Taiwan' stuff.

ukraineally··on Thousands of Russian tech workers sign petition opposing invasion of Ukraine
Chess is obviously huge in Russia.

Day 1 of the invasion virtually every russian chess player said no to war. FIDE has also withdrawn everything chess from Russia. Russian Chess is on the correct side of history.

2 exceptions:

Sergey Karjakin who publicly supports the invasion. His career in chess is over. Any chess tournament who admits him will have mass amounts of strong players immediately withdraw from the tournament. He will forever be shadow banned from chess.

Anatoly Karpov who voted in favour of the invasion, he's personally sanctioned by virtually the entire world because he is in the russian duma. He is in fact more of a scumbag than Karjakin.

Something that is evidently clear, the Russian people are not behind this war. We must make efforts to applaud this of the Russian people. When this conflict ends, we must work to return Russia to the world community. To not punish the Russian people in long term. However, we can only do this when Russia is defeated. Diplomacy while Putin is in power is literally impossible.

ukraineally··on Russia gives Ukraine deadline for decision on talks in Belarus
China seems to have been blindsided on this war. They most likely were made aware of the republics but certainly didn't expect full invasion. On day 2, china demanded diplomatic talks, hosted in china. Russia refused. Said they could happen in their puppet belarus. Which is outrageous and a huge slap in the face to China.

Russia saying they stand for peace is absolutely absurd. Everyone around the world knows it is Russia who is the aggressor.

>"If the talks are rejected, the Ukrainian side shall bear all responsibility for bloodshed," Medinsky said. "But we remain here until 15:00 waiting for a response from the Ukrainian side."

On the contrary. Russia bears ALL responsibility hence forth regardless of anything Russia ever says or does.

>"We are waiting. Everyone is in Gomel waiting. If they come then there will be negotiations," Lukashenko

Oh ya, I bet they are waiting. I bet China is on the brink of breaking their alliance.

You must remember, China hates Russia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_of_Peking

The UK used to own Hong Kong, Portugal Macau. Those were rightfully returned to China.

Russia still holds Chinese land.

If you also look at it, China was going to uphold the right for these new republics to exist.Casting significant doubt on China's intention to invade Taiwan.

I wrote here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30471021 about how Russian spies have infiltrated Canadian media. They pushed utter lies that Canadians are nazis. For example, https://globalnews.ca/news/8543281/covid-trucker-convoy-orga...

You will notice this Russian spy: https://globalnews.ca/author/rachel-gilmore/ stopped publishing quite abruptly. At exactly the same time the russian invasion was happening and the Canadian government getting wise. Did she escape back to Russia or did the RCMP pick her up? We may never know.

We must also face the possibility that our perception of China has been manipulated by Russian spies. That China is actually our ally and Xi Jinping no longer believes in territorial borders or at least any need to move them. China's very long history has never been about expansion. The list of wars involving China is quite small.

>There's been some groups raising independent fighting forces in Syria and Chechnya, but I don't think they've gotten to Ukraine yet. Ukraine has been actively recruiting Westerners who have been willing to fight since 2014 as well.

I have seen this, roughly 20,000 strong. But they have been specfically instructed to only shoot at nazis. That general ukrainian troops aren't allies, but they are not allowed to kill them.

>I'd bet money (1) Zelenskyy is being actively supported/coached by the CIA or MI6 (his PR/propaganda game has been absolutely on point),

Oh man is it ever. Dont know who exactly, but ya no doubt getting coached.

>2) there are covert-ops teams in Ukraine that are assisting the rag-tag paramilitary and civilian groups with advanced urban warfare tactics (e.g. demolishing bridges, improvised armaments, etc.), a

I suspect language barriers would prevent much work together here.

What I have been seeing, there are tons of videos of 'aftermaths' where russians took tons of losses but nothing else. I would expect the spec ops took out the russians and just moved on. They are largely speaking just looking at intel and intercepting ground troops.

>(3) the Kremlin is correct that NATO/US UAVs are relaying detailed Russian troop/ship movements back to Ukranian leadership.

You can confirm this yourself on various ADSB tracking maps. Dont forget geo spy sattelites. The russian troops are tracked in real time. They are sitting ducks who haven't even seen true resistance yet.

ukraineally··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, Feb 26, 2022
>Maybe, however, it’s more likely that Russia’s military is less competently run than previously thought. I wouldn’t be surprised if intel was being shared with Ukraine and weapons definitely are being shared.

There is info that the troops didnt think they were invading. They were either thinking they were protecting against nazi troops or were just training.

This makes sense, if you're planning an invasion, the troops cant be told. They would be security threats.

But at the same time, that lack of knowledge will make them ill prepared at the beginning. But their morale after these massive losses will suffer.

The thing is about proxy spec ops. It's practically 100% they are there but russian troops cant be told. Imagine you're already taking losses, then you get told the world's spec ops are there. You'd shit your pants. You're figthing against farmers and navy seals? You would have to treat every fight like you are fighting navy seals. That would make anyone rout instantly.

ukraineally··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, Feb 26, 2022
>I’ve been following this closely and I haven’t seen any mention of non-Ukrainian forces in the country. Seems like pure speculation?

Absolutely pure speculation.

We never know what the navy seals or the green berets or the french dragoons, etc etc are doing. Everyone has many divisions of specops. Seal team 6 were the ones who very illegally operated within pakistan to kill osama bin laden.

In fact, Pakistan became a belligerent(siding with russia) in the Ukraine conflict probably due to large part of the publicity of the killing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Osama_bin_Laden#Und...

Now im not interested debating the legality here. Im just pointing out, they operate wherever the hell they please. I would bet any amount of money specops of all major countries are in ukraine right now. Not 100% of the allies of ukraine and certainly not 0%.

I'd also bet there are constant very high res spy sattelites mapping every step of every russian soldier. You can actively see the global hawks operating. You can actively see the awacs in the air.

NATO response force is active and at the border. Those dude are going to be damn near if not as well trained as specops.

Like, being realistic, Russia already lost the war and they dont realize it.

The thing that got me thinking about this. Spetsnaz blue berets airdropped into that international airport, they took it. Spetsnaz are legit and well trained... and they were routed within the day? I dont believe it. I do believe it when I consider specops from across the world came in and wrecked their face.

ukraineally··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, Feb 26, 2022
>What is the actual goal here? Can someone please explain to me why this is all happening?

Well in Putin's own words, it seems obvious and clear. Ukraine's government are Nazis who are committing genocide over Russians in the new republics as Ukraine invaded the republics to reclaim the land.

“As I said in my previous address, one cannot look at what is happening there without compassion. It was simply impossible to endure all this. It was necessary to stop this nightmare immediately – the genocide against the millions of people living there, who rely only on Russia, hope only on us. It was these aspirations, feelings, pain of people that were for us the main motive for deciding to recognise the people’s republics of Donbas.”

“What I think is important to emphasise further. In order to achieve their own goals, the leading NATO countries support extreme nationalists and neo-Nazis in Ukraine in everything, who, in turn, will never forgive the Crimeans and Sevastopol residents for their free choice – reunification with Russia.”

While all this nazi crap is absurd. We can also discount the possibility that Putin has been misled. He's ex-KGB. They were actively trained to be able to avoid exactly that. Instead this is obvious propaganda. The president of ukraine is jewish and target #1. Obviously not a nazi, this was more to mislead the russian duma and russian people.

>What an absolute disgrace that we fight each other over BS orders. So many lives, especially of young people, lost for what?

We have to figure out the 'they didnt go into iraq for wmds, they went there for oil'. It's all pure speculation. Go to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Ukraine and throw a dart. Whatever you hit, that's it.

There is this: https://venturebeat.com/2022/02/24/ukraine-supplies-90-perce...

If you have been following... there's about a trillion $ of investment in new chip fabs. Everyone in the world is rushing to build chip fabs. Russia taking this neon production could give them the edge they need... To what end?

The thing for me? there's nothing in ukraine that makes it good there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon#Production It can basically be done anywhere.

And what's even the point? Russia has basically been excluded from ever making any value from this.

ukraineally··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, Feb 26, 2022
>As a non-military minded observer, my first thoughts were, "How much resolve does the Russian soldier have in this war?" There must be many personal connections between Ukranian and Russian soldiers and citzens of the other country. Relatives, friends, business colleagues. As a soldier aiming his rifle or firing a barrage of rockets, is he wondering if the person on the other end is a cousin? Or college friend?

This is much more of a factor than what you even say. A significant portion of troops are not interested in killing the enemy. Especially true of conscripts, some conscript platoons were near 100% incapable of shooting at the enemy that the enemy could slaughter them all.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.L.A._Marshall

He discovered that either people wont stick their head out of the hole and instead shoot at tree tops. Hoping to scare them off? Or they simply never shot their rifle even once. People certainly criticize this, but I criticize the critics. This guy is 100% right and a large part why conscription doesnt work.

That changes up with general mobilization, if people are defending their own country like vietnam... it's just that much worse because those people are trying to repel invaders. They will shoot the invaders. Their lives have been interrupted and the interrupters must be killed.

So when non-special forces troops actually enter the cities and come up against general mobilization. Russians will take huge losses because those troops will not shoot back directly at the enemy.

I also have a theory, the huge list of allies of ukraine have special forces deployed in proxy war. We will never know the truth obviously. Russian troops who think they are fighting civilians are coming up against some of the best of the best in the world. Russia can't even tell the troops they might be coming up against other special forces. It would be tremendously demoralizing.

ukraineally··on Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, Feb 26, 2022
It seems to me(not anything) that Russia's failures all around are quite unexpected. Their military is significantly less prepared than they ought to be. General mobilization vs russian military will become very rough for Russia when they bring reg troops into the cities. They aren't even at that stage.

I was thinking about it today, conclusion is that there are proxy operators in the theatre. Ukraine hasn't been left alone military wise. Russia is also fighting how many other special forces of undeclared countries? Probably all of them?

Russia thinks they are fighting against mom and dads, which they are, but they are also fighting against special forces who are probably wrecking the russian troops. They cant even account for this neither. To do so would destroy troop morale, add significant fear, and add tremendous time to the invasion.

Considering this, the probability of even being successful in their plan to take ukraine is near 0. Sanctions and isolation will cripple them before they can overcome this massive degree of proxy war.

russia is going to hurt so badly.

ukraineally··on Effective teams don’t keep secrets
My last job, everything was a secret. Documentation was in people's minds. I was practically the only person who ever wrote public documentation for the team. Most people kept personal passworded one notes where they kept their own documentation.

Lets not even talk about beyond the necessities for a team. Salary? Oh boy was that ever secret. The one guy had an instant where he was oncall, major outage in the middle of the night and he didnt wake up to answer the alarms. Big client billionaire ceo demanded the guy be fired. Boss went around tell everyone that we were going to pretend he was fired, but he wasnt fired.

So naturally when this guy gets a new job, he tells everyone how much $ and benefits he's getting at the new job. He even tells people how much he used to be paid. People were freaking out. Minimu wage was $14 at the time and some senior sysadmins were only getting $22. LOL so many quit within a month or so.

ukraineally··on Full consensus for disconnecting Russia from SWIFT achieved, process has begun
>likely but it's an open secret at this point that nato is non-reciprocally sharing intel with ukraine, this is completely unprecendted. look at intelligence aircraft signalling their presence on ads-b, including forte11/12 drones in the black sea - ukrainians are getting data from them, no other explanation for their effectiveness - they seem to be aware of every move of russian forces, every inbound airstrike, etc.

Oh for sure. so many awacs and global hawks in the air. This 'ghost of kyiv' ace without question had downlink or at least specific real time intel to know exactly how to put himself on their 6.

Ironically, the russian media denies the ghost of kyiv exists. says the footage is all DCS. Frankly it's impossible given so many different points of view. The best argument they can really say is that its more than 1 pilot. But the first reality of nato intel is far more plausible.

No invasion in Europe for how many decades? Long past many people's lifetimes. Building those relationships through trade can be great impediments to further conflicts. They knew the strategic cost of having done this. Unfortunately, the cost to the German people must now be accepted.

ukraineally··on Full consensus for disconnecting Russia from SWIFT achieved, process has begun
Russia is not self-sufficient. They require Germany, Finland, and China to keep sending them resources. It is a matter of time before they are simply incapable of continuing the war. Simply from a resource depletion point of view.

Unfortunately, this desperation will not open up diplomacy, it will likely be at the cost of the people. They are not in a situation to take on such a large military force if they attack EU or NATO.

The point of these damaging sanctions is to not need war ever again in the future. If Russia, a nuclear power, cannot take Ukraine and cannot weather the sanctions toward success. It will tell the entire world that war is not needed anymore. That is a thing of the past for humanity.

Additionally, there's some very unusual resistance to Russian troops. It was Spetsnaz blue berets who airborne dropped to take this airport: https://news.yahoo.com/russian-forces-attack-airport-outside...

But were routed so quickly? The probability that normal Ukrainian troops could do this is quite low.

The probability that many other countries have their special forces operating in Ukraine is 100%. Obviously nobody will admit to this. The Russians probably don't realize this and is suffering these massive casualties because of it.

ukraineally··on Full consensus for disconnecting Russia from SWIFT achieved, process has begun

This will be a fix coming to virtually every major country very soon. "Disinformation" and "Misinformation" and "hate" stuff is going to hit every country and it's not surprising how quick everyone has moved on this.

Let me describe what just went down in Canada. A national catastrophe. If you disagree with my take, I'm happy to provide sources.

We have a vaccine mandate disproportionately harming racial minorities, it's still in place. Why do Black Canadians not get vaccinated? Tuskegee? I don't know. Why do the indigenous? Maybe because the Canadian government has a history of experimenting on them? Ultimately doesn't matter as part of the discussion. We look to our 2 greatest allies, USA and UK. They had no mandates or at least had a roadmap to the end. We didn't have a roadmap and we just unemployed those people? There's legitimate cause for protest.

This article can be my proof that the protest in Ottawa was diverse: https://thepostmillennial.com/jagmeet-singh-faces-backlash-a...

The problem was that the Canadian media labelled the convoy as a bunch of nazis. there was literally only 1 nazi flag and there also just happened to have professional photographers following him? Was he even party of the convoy/protest? That was enough though, the hate convoy was fabricated. There's virtually no nazis and certainly no confederates in Canada. That's not our thing. Hell, the total protest size is estimated well above 100,000 people. Even if Canada has nazis, we don't have that many.

Not once did Trudeau go talk to the protest. He refused because they were all a bunch of nazis with unacceptable views. The ottawa police couldn't do anything against their right to protest and it was big enough that Trudeau couldn't keep ignoring. People demanded action against these nazis before they overthrow the government. Trudeau deployed martial law and arrested the lawful protest. Those illegal nazis looking to overthrow the government!

Trudeau in parliament even got to calling a Jewish MP a nazi for standing with swastikas. He even refused to apologize and doubled down later(a jewish liberal MP called her a nazi as well) Crushing dissent in Canada got denunciation by tons of good left-wing celebrities. Worse yet, the judge who is presiding over the court cases of these protesters is a liberal party candidate back in 2011. Clear conflict of interest.

Right before the Ukraine invasion, Trudeau absolutely abruptly stopped all the name calling over night. He then spoke that there's a great need to start talking to your friends and family who have differing political views. Typical anti echo chamber stuff. This is the day he got briefed about Putin's invasion I am sure. He went from declaring martial law to revoking it in an instant. Baffling everyone.

There's literally a Liberal senator who asserted "Honk Honk" actually stands for Heil Hitler. Absolute crazy person. Meanwhile Jordan peterson was having a heart attack online because he justly saw the tyranny of the government for what it was. The government did crush dissent. We do have political prisoners. This is a current catastrophe that hasn't been fixed at all. Attention went to Ukraine for good reason, but we have a nightmare still in Canada.

This abrupt 180 on the national emergency, Trudeau baffled everyone. People said 'oh the polls are in', Nope. Polls are in, they havent budged. senate was going to vote against(they werent). the various global celebrities calling Trudeau out on his actions. Nope.

Our PM just quietly admitted to it during the Ukraine sanctions speech, in his speech he said, and I paraphrase and taken out of context and ruined in every way, "for the past few weeks putin has been controlling the media"

Putin has controlled the media for decades in Russia. This was an admission of Canadian media. The past few weeks have been the convoy. In fact, international media were fantastic. NYTimes put their political ideology aside and called Trudeau out. Round of applause for the NYtimes. In fact, the international media were generally pretty fair, many didnt agree with the point of the protest, but agreed the protest should continue. They went to the protest because the Canadian media labelled this protest as 100,000 strong nazis looking to overthrow the government. International media saw a fantastic story because Canadians are generally good people, but when they got boots on the ground... that's obviously not what they found.

Putin made it clear: He was invading to denazify Ukraine. Ironically the amazing president of ukraine is jewish. But we heard this just recently didn't we... Who else just called a Jewish person a Nazi? No, Trudeau simply got disinformed to an extreme degree by Russian propaganda. His echo chamber told him everyone was a nazi.

All this BS about nazis, systemic racism and all that crap is Putin. The journalists who have been pushing all this nazi crap are russian agents. In fact, this entire protest was covered by rt.com about 100x more than the CBC covered it. Fox news was like 50x more than the CBC. Other entities covered it about the same. I would bet good money that the RCMP and CSIS are investigating those journalists today.

The world is about to pass laws to ban disinformation because it was clearly weaponized by Russia. However, we have an ongoing injustice here in Canada. I expect monday when parliament resumes Trudeau will offer that apology to Melissa Lantsman. I hope he elaborates on this more.

It's certainly a charged event with emotions running hot. People are going to say things that are wrong.

Crimea was a difficult subject because they are ethnically russian. Due in large part to a gigantic naval base. They did vote to separate from the Ukraine.

That was then, today is different. The direct invasion of Ukraine is aggression. Putin lied, diplomacy has failed.

ukraineally··on Why the West is reluctant to deny Russian banks access to SWIFT
My understanding Germany made a huge mistake in connecting with Russia. Swift and or petroleum product sanctions would just crush germany. This is going to be a key reason. Given the context, no real major war had ever happened in a long time. Perhaps Germany was connecting in order to build relationships. Which may actually be a long term benefit for everyone. In the long run maybe preventing further conflict.

Germany did halt Nordstream 2, which wasnt doing anything yet, but I dont believe they did anything else yesterday? Most likely they fear retribution.
