tyrex2017··on Preparing for Malicious Uses of AI
you are naive and live in a fantasy world if you are afraid of this.

regarding the jew example, the problem is not about having stated in public what you are but with societies which discriminate.

you might have a point saying “my life should not be transparent, as to make it more difficult for a potential discriminatory society to attack me”.

but it makes no real sense to worry about it because it is so super minor in comparison to the deep problems this society will have. i know you disagree :)

i dont believe so. can you give an example?

duck duck go, for example, has 0.3% market share.

you need to look at the typical john and mary on the street.

tyrex2017··on Comparative efficacy and acceptability of 21 antidepressant drugs
i agree with your points, but 50% is already good i think.

it is less than anyone might spontaneously guess, but it is still good, considering that you will try a couple of other things in addition, like cognitive therapy.

So getting some good months long treatment by a doctor can lead to (lets say) 70% curation rate. It then becomes sad if people choose to stay away from doctors and I just commented to not discourage possible ill persons.

You probably just wanted to stress that such pills are far away from doing guaranteed miracles and you are right.

i dont share your concerns at all. my daily feelings and activities wouldnt change, whether facebook and google know about them or not. Contrast that to being killed by a drone.

privacy concerns is rather an interesting intellectual problem, and not a real one. if it was a real problem, people would change their use of those tools but they dont.

you can argue that loss of privacy allows corporations to manipulate us, but i see only trivial effects. look at how people vote and buy. i see more diversity and conclude less manipulation.

NNT might be 7 for one drug and one try, but the therapist will try several drugs and doses.

I could imagine that NNT might significantly improve if you consider “use antidepressants” instead of “use 1 antidepressant 1 time”

tyrex2017··on Why is it hard to make friends over 30? (2012)
fully agree. you need regular encounters. at least 7 i read somewhere, and this is only possible in the context of a regular hobby/class.

so it may be less about being 30+ and more about not having regular activities which bring you in contact with the same people over and over again.

tyrex2017··on Ask HN: Can you get away with not working?
or maybe they are super pressed and would need it to be done faster, but trust the OP that this is simply not possible (because he must work on his side gig)

amen :)

if it is a healthy company they will figure you out and throw you away once it becomes convenient.

if it is a bad company, you might get away with that, but you will miss on a lot of learnigs, earnings and networking if you stay there.

in both cases, i believe you should make a change.

personally, i would be too compassionate to the company’s success, and too paranoid on improving my own job security and salary to ever think about doing what you do. i am not judging though.

tyrex2017··on Evidence-Based Guidelines for Writing Questions on Stack Overflow
Sure. A possible outcome could have been: Upper case questions are better

Possible rationale: They get more attention

We need to study such things objectively. Also results may change over time as internet users get used to things
